A new Fuzzy Differential Evolution (FDE) algorithm is proposed for solving multiobjective optimal power flow with FACTS devices. This new optimization technique combines the advantages of Weighted Additive Fuzzy Goal Programming (WAFGP) and Differential Evolution (DE) in enhancing the capacity, stability, and security of the power system. As the weights used in WAFGP would have a significant impact on the operational and economical enhancements achieved in the optimization, they are optimized using evolutionary DE algorithm. This provides a way for exploring a balanced solution for a multiobjective problem without sacrificing any individual objective’s uniqueness and priority. The multiple objectives considered are maximizing the loadability condition of the power system with minimum system real power loss and minimum installation cost of the FACTS devices. Indian utility Neyveli Thermal Power Station (NTPS) 23 bus system is used to test the proposed algorithm using multiple FACTS devices. The results compared with that of DE based fuzzy goal programming (FGP) demonstrates that DE based WAFGP algorithm not only provides a balanced optimal solution for all objectives but also provides the best economical solution.

Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem is an optimization tool through which secure and economic operating conditions of power system is obtained. In recent years, Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices, have led to the development of controllers that provide controllability and flexibility for power transmission. Series FACTS devices such as Thyristor controlled series compensators (TCSC), with its ability to directly control the power flow can be very effective to power system security. Thus, integration TCSC in the OPF is one of important current problems and is a suitable method for better utilization of the existing system. This paper is applied Cuckoo Optimization Algorithm (COA) for the solution of the OPF problem of power system equipped with TCSC. The proposed approach has been examined and tested on the IEEE 30-bus system. The results presented in this paper demonstrate the potential of COA algorithm and show its effectiveness for solving the OPF problem with TCSC devices over the other evolutionary optimization techniques.

In this paper, quasi-oppositional teaching-learning based optimization (QOTLBO) is introduced and successfully applied for solving an optimal power flow (OPF) problem in power system incorporating flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS). The main drawback of the original teaching-learning based optimization (TLBO) is that it gives a local optimal solution rather than the near global optimal one in limited iteration cycles. In this paper, opposition based learning (OBL) concept is introduced to improve the convergence speed and simulation results of TLBO. The effectiveness of the proposed method implemented with MATLAB and tested on modified IEEE 30-bus system in four different cases. The simulation results show the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed QOTLBO algorithm over other methods like conventional BBO and hybrid biogeography-based optimization (HDE-BBO). This method gives better solution quality in finding the optimal parameter settings for FACTS devices to solve OPF problems. The simulation study also shows that using FACTS devices, it is possible to improve the quality of the electric power supply thereby providing an economically attractive solution to power system problems.

This paper proposes a hybrid differential evolution (DE) and harmony search (HS) for solving optimal power flow (OPF) problem with FACTS devices including static Var compensator (SVC), thyristor-controlled series compensation (TCSA), and thyristor-controlled phase shifter (TCPS). The proposed hybrid DE-HS is to utilize the advantages of the DE and HS methods to enhance its search ability for dealing with large-scale and complex problems. The proposed method has been tested on the IEEE 30 bus system with the variety of objective functions including quadratic fuel cost, power loss, voltage deviation, and voltage stability index and the obtained results from the proposed hybrid DE-HS have been compared to those from other algorithms. The result comparison has indicated that the proposed hybrid DE-HS algorithm can obtain better solution quality than many other methods. Therefore, the proposed hybrid DE-HS method can be an efficient method for solving the OPF problem incorporating FACTS devices.

The complexity of a power system operating with transient stability/security constraints increases with increased interconnection of power transmission networks. Many of the power system’s secure operations are affected with the voltage/transient instability problems. Thereby, the modern power systems have considered solving optimal power flow (OPF) problems using voltage/transient stability constraints as a tedious and challenging task. Algebraic and differential equations of the voltage/stability constraints are included in non-linear optimal power flow optimization problems. In this work, the OPF problems with voltage/stability constraints are solved using a newly developed reliable and robust technique. Moreover, the impact of a FACTS device such as STATCOM device was investigated to test its impact in the enhancement of power system performance. An adaptive unified differential evolution (AuDE) technique is proposed to search in the non-convex and nonlinear problems to obtain the global optimal solutions. Compared to other existing methods and basic DE, the proposed AuDE algorithm has achieved better results under simulation conditions. The power system’s performance is considerably enhanced with STATCOM device. Efficiency of the proposed method in solving the transient and security constrained power systems for optimal operations were demonstrated using the numerical results obtained from IEEE 39-bus, 10-generator system and IEEE 30-bus, 6-generator system. Due to page limitation only 30-bus systems results are presented.

The introduction of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) in a power system reduces the losses, reduces the cost of generation, and improves the stability also improves the load capability of the system. In this paper, a non-traditional optimization technique, genetic algorithm is used to optimize the various process parameters involved of FACTS devices in a power system The various parameter taken into the consideration were the location of the FACTS were their types and their rated value of the device. A genetic algorithm (GA) is simultaneously is used to minimize the total generation cost, and power loss/voltage deviation with in true and reactive power generation limits, Test results on the modified IEEE 30-bus system with various types of the FACTS controller The optimization results clearly indicates that the correct location of the FACTS devices will increase the loadability of the system and GA can be effectively used for this type of optimization.

Shunt FACTS devices provide the possibility to control voltages and therefore to improve the security of the system. In order to use this possibility, the optimal location and the set values of the FACTS controllers have to be selected correctly. The singular analysis of the power system Jacobian matrix are applied to identify the optimal location of shunt FACTS devices in large power systems. Furthermore the application of Optimal Power Flow control is a possible method for choosing set values. In this paper a sensitivity index for the detection of sensor nodes is defined. Sensitivity analysis is used to determine the area on which the FACTS device has significant influence. And then only this limited area is included in the Optimal Power Flow control, because it is very difficult to include the entire system into the optimization process. Matlab code is written to find the optimal location of Shunt Facts device i.e., SVC. Furthermore the objective function of Optimal Power Flow control is analyzed. This function consists of three components. A certain type of FACTS is not able to influence all these components.
