Prediction of bus arrival time is an important part of intelligent transportation systems. Accurate prediction can help passengers make travel plans and improve travel efficiency. Given the nonlinearity, randomness, and complexity of bus arrival time, this paper proposes the use of a wavelet neural network (WNN) model with an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm (IPSO) that replaces the gradient descent method. The proposed IPSO-WNN model overcomes the limitations of the gradient-based WNN which can easily produce local optimum solutions and stop the training process and thus improves prediction accuracy. Application of the model is illustrated using operational data of an actual bus line. The results show that the proposed model is capable of accurately predicting bus arrival time, where the root-mean square error and the maximum relative error were reduced by 42% and 49%, respectively.

In order to accurately identify the change of shearer cutting load, a novel approach was proposed through integration of improved particle swarm optimization and wavelet neural network. An improved updating strategy for inertia weight was presented to avoid falling into the local optimum. Moreover, immune mechanism was applied in the proposed approach to enhance the population diversity and improve the quality of solution, and the flowchart of the proposed approach was designed. Furthermore, a simulation example was carried out and comparison results indicated that the proposed approach was feasible, efficient, and outperforming others. Finally, an industrial application example of coal mining face was demonstrated to specify the effect of the proposed system.

The aim is to improve the convergence of the algorithm, and increase the population diversity. Adaptively particles of groups fallen into local optimum is adjusted in order to realize global optimal. by judging groups spatial location of concentration and fitness variance. At the same time, the global factors are adjusted dynamically with the action of the current particle fitness. Four typical function optimization problems are drawn into simulation experiment. The results show that the improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is convergent, robust and accurate.

Target localization technology has been intensively studied and broadly applied in many fields. This paper presents one improved particle swarm optimization technique in training a back-propagation neural network for position estimation in target localization. The proposed scheme combines particle swarm optimization (PSO), back-propagation neural network (BP), adaptive inertia weight and hybrid mutation, called IPSO-BP. To verify the proposed IPSO-BP approach, comparisons between the PSO-based BP approach (PSO-BP) and general back-propagation neural network (BP) are made. The computational results show that the proposed IPSO-BP approach exhibits much better performance in the training process and better prediction ability in the validation process than those using the other two base line approaches.

In order to diagnose the fault in analog circuit correctly, a Wavelet Neural Network (WNN) method is proposed that uses the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to optimize the network parameters. For the improvement of convergence rate in WNN based on PSO algorithm, a compressing method in research space is introduced into the traditional PSO algorithm to improve the convergence in WNN training. The simulation shows that the proposed method has a good diagnosis with fast convergence rate for the fault in analog circuit.
