AbstractWe show that the left regular representation of a countably infinite (discrete) group admits no finite-dimensional invariant subspaces. We also discuss a consequence of this fact, and the reason for our interest in this statement. We then formally state, as a ‘conjecture’, a possible generalisation of the above statement to the context of fusion algebras. We prove the validity of this conjecture in the case of the fusion algebra arising from the dual of a compact Lie group. We finally show, by example, that our conjecture is false as stated, and raise the question of whether there is a ‘good’ class of fusion algebras, which contains (a) the two ‘good classes’ discussed above, namely, discrete groups and compact group duals, and (b) only contains fusion algebras for which the conjecture is valid.

Intensive research in matrix completions, moments, and sums of Hermitian squares has yielded a multitude of results in recent decades. This book provides a comprehensive account of this quickly developing area of mathematics and applications and gives complete proofs of many recently solved problems. With MATLAB codes and more than two hundred exercises, the book is ideal for a special topics course for graduate or advanced undergraduate students in mathematics or engineering, and will also be a valuable resource for researchers. Often driven by questions from signal processing, control theory, and quantum information, the subject of this book has inspired mathematicians from many subdisciplines, including linear algebra, operator theory, measure theory, and complex function theory. In turn, the applications are being pursued by researchers in areas such as electrical engineering, computer science, and physics. The book is self-contained, has many examples, and for the most part requires only a basic background in undergraduate mathematics, primarily linear algebra and some complex analysis. The book also includes an extensive discussion of the literature, with close to six hundred references from books and journals from a wide variety of disciplines.

Abstract Let $(G_1,\omega _1)$ and $(G_2,\omega _2)$ be weighted discrete groups and $0\lt p\leq 1$ . We characterise biseparating bicontinuous algebra isomorphisms on the p-Banach algebra $\ell ^p(G_1,\omega _1)$ . We also characterise bipositive and isometric algebra isomorphisms between the p-Banach algebras $\ell ^p(G_1,\omega _1)$ and $\ell ^p(G_2,\omega _2)$ and isometric algebra isomorphisms between $\ell ^p(S_1,\omega _1)$ and $\ell ^p(S_2,\omega _2)$ , where $(S_1,\omega _1)$ and $(S_2,\omega _2)$ are weighted discrete semigroups.

AbstractAn explicit description of the ring of the rational polynomials in r indeterminates as a representation of the Lie algebra of the endomorphisms of the k-th exterior power of a countably infinite-dimensional vector space is given. Our description is based on results by Laksov and Throup concerning the symmetric structure of the exterior power of a polynomial ring. Our results are based on approximate versions of the vertex operators occurring in the celebrated bosonic vertex representation, due to Date, Jimbo, Kashiwara and Miwa, of the Lie algebra of all matrices of infinite size, whose entries are all zero but finitely many.

AbstractUsing the spectral decomposition of the phase space developed in Adimy and co-authors, we present a new approach to study weighted pseudo almost automorphic functions in the α-norm using the measure theory.
