An unusual new genus and species of beaded lacewings (Neuroptera: Berothidae) from the mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber

A new genus and species of the neuropteran family Berothidae from the mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber, namely Xiaoberotha bipunctata gen. et sp. nov., is described. In addition, an undetermined species of this new genus is also described. This new genus greatly differs from most known berothids by the presence of forewing ScA and the configuration of hind wing Cu that is not approximating posterior wing margin. The new genus superficially resembles Hemerobiidae by having the distinct, posteriorly curved forewing ScA and the two forewing cua-cup crossveins that are shared by many brown lacewing genera. However, no autapomorphy of Hemerobiidae could be confirmed to be present in the new species. Here we tentatively place this new genus in Berothidae by the configuration of the female gonocoxites 8, which is conspicuous and dorsoventrally extended. This unusual beaded lacewing genus highlights the morphological diversity of the extinct Berothidae.

A new genus and species of small wasp (body length, 4.3 mm, exclusive of antennae) of the extinct family Praeaulacidae (Hymenoptera: Evanioidea) is described in Burmese amber. Placement in the Praeaulacidae is based on the hind wing venation with RS, cu-a and apparent r-m present and a 10-celled forewing. Special forewing features are a large CuA cell and very narrow 3rm cell that is not aligned with 2r-m. The narrow hind wings have a unique venation with RS, M, Cu and A reaching the lower wing margin. The metasoma is attached to the propodium by a 1-segmented petiole. The ovipositor is long, exceeding the length of the metasoma. An angiosperm flower is adjacent to the wasp and the presence of herbivorous insect larvae on the flower may have attracted the female wasp.

A new genus and species of the lacewing family Psychopsidae, Electropsychops handlirschi gen. et sp. nov., is described based on a well preserved male specimen from the mid-Cretaceous amber of Myanmar. The new genus possesses a number of diagnostic characters of Psychopsidae, i.e., the lack of a forewing median nygma, the presence of a vena triplica, and the straight and barely forked RA. However, it also exhibits some remarkable characters that are present in Osmylopsychopidae, such as the distally narrowed forewing costal space and the sigmoid MA stem in the hind wing. The relationship between Psychopsidae and Osmylopsychopidae is briefly discussed.

Leafhoppers of the Eupteryx-complex differ from other members of the tribe Typhlocybini in having the posterior branch of hind wing vein R separate from the anterior branch of M (Young 1952). The complex now includes 9 known genera of which 5 genera, Aguriahana Distant 1918, Eurhadina Haupt 1929, Eupteryx Curtis 1833, Caknesia Dworakowska 1994, Almunisna Dworakowska 1969 and Bellpenna Chiang et al 1989, have been reported from China. Here we propose a new genus Comahadina Huang and Zhang which shares the hind wing character with other genera in the complex, based on a new species, Comahadina angelica Huang and Zhang, here designated as the type-species. The new genus and species are described and illustrated and a key to all genera of the Eupteryx-complex is provided.

A new genus and species of the extinct family Weitschatidae, Criniverticillus longicumulus gen. et sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha), is described and illustrated from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. The new species is based on a fossil specimen with complete body, wings and antennae. The family diagnosis is updated to include similarities between Criniverticillus, Pseudoweitschatus and Weitschatus. An identification key to species of Weitschatidae is provided.

A new genus and species of Philopotamidae (Philopotaminae),Aymaradellaboliviana, is described from the Bolivian Andes of South America. The new genus differs from other Philopotaminae by the loss of 2A vein in the hind wing and, in the male genitalia, the synscleritous tergum and sternum of segment VIII, and the elongate sclerotized dorsal processes of segment VIII. The first record ofHydrobiosella(Philopotaminae) in the New World is also provided with a new species from the Andes of Ecuador,Hydrobiosellaandina. In addition, a new species of the Neotropical genusChimarrhodella(Chimarrinae),Chimarrhodellachoco, is described from the Choco-Andean region of Ecuador, andChimarrhodellaperuviana(Ross) is recorded from Ecuador for the first time. Lastly,Wormaldiaimbrialis(Philopotaminae), new species, is described, also from the Ecuadorian Choco.

A new genus and species of Cydnidae, Punctacorona triplosticha gen. et sp. nov. (Heteroptera: Pentatomomorpha) is described and illustrated from Myanmar amber. This new genus is established based on its forewing anterior margin angulated, clavus narrow, with three rows of distinct punctures, metapleuron neighboring to posterior margin of evaporatorium carinate. A comparison between the new species and the Chilamnestocoris mixtus Lis et al. 2018 from Myanmar is provided.

A new genus and species of the basal bethylid subfamily Holopsenellinae is described and figured from a female in Burmese amber, the first occurrence of the lineage outside of the Early Cretaceous deposits of Lebanon. Holopsenelliscus pankowskiorum gen. and sp. nov., differs from other holopsenellines most notably in the discontinuous anterior wing margin and open subdiscal cell, among other traits. The genus and species are described in full and distinguished from Holopsenella primotica Engel et al. in Lebanese amber and Cretabythus sibiricus Evans in Taimyrian amber. A key to the genera of Holopsenellinae is provided.

New genus and species (Cordela rubra gen. et sp. nov.) are described from Costa Rica. They represent a new tribe of the subfamily Thioniinae (Cordelini trib. nov.) which is based on the unique structure of the hind wing having weak clefts on the terminal margin, the cubitus anterior and cubitus posterior not fused with each other, and the second anal vein simple.

A new genus and species, Multistria orthotropagen. et sp. nov., and a new species, Dachibangus huisp. nov., of Mimarachnidae are described from the mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. These new taxa display unique wing color patterns and extend the Mesozoic diversity of Mimarachnidae. The evolution of wing venation, phylogenetic placement of Mimarachnidae, and anti-predation defenses of this family in Burmese amber forest are briefly discussed.

Givarbela steinbachi was described as a new genus and species by Clench (1957), based on 21 specimens from central Bolivia (Prov. del Sara; Buena Vista and Rio Japacani). He indicated that Givarbela (Figs 1‒8) belongs to the Langsdorfia-Givira group of genera but differs from them by the following combination of characters: “R2 stalked with R3-R4, R5 free; the long palpi; absence of fore tibial epiphysis; absence of median cell-vein on fore wing and the open cell-end there; stalked M2-M3 on hind wing; absence of all but traces of a single hind wing anal vein; short hind wing cell; deeply excised hind wing costa“ (Clench 1957).
