Bellevalia koyuncui sp. nova (Asparagaceae): a new species from South Eastern Anatolia, Turkey

Bellevalia Lapeyrouse (1808: 425) is a genus comprising about 65 species and subspecies distributed over the Mediterranean region (Bareka et al. 2008, Jafari & Maassoumi 2008, Borzatti von Loewenstern et al. 2013).       Wendelbo (1984) reported 18 taxa, seven of which endemic to the country. In further studies, Wendelbo (1985) reduced Bellevalia latifolia Feinbrun (1940: 369) to a synonym of B. olivieri (Baker 1874: 8) Wendelbo (1985: 120). Since then, three species were published by Özhatay (2000), while Johnson (2003) reduced B. pycnantha (Koch 1849: 255) Losinskaja (1935: 310) to a synonym of B. paradoxa (Fischer & Meyer 1835: 30) Boissier (1882: 308). In recent years, four more species, B. leucantha Persson (2006: 253), B. malatyaensis Uzunh. & H.Duman in Uzunhisarcıklı et al. (2013: 652), B. chrisii Yıldırım & B.Şahin in Yıldırım et al. (2015: in press) and B. pseudolongipes Karabacak & Yıldırım in Karabacak et al. (2014: 210) were described. In this study, we present a further new species, Bellevalia koyuncui, endemic to Turkey.

Rheum telianum is described as a new species from Kayatepe village (south-eastern Anatolia, Turkey). It is morphologically related to the west-central Asiatic R. ribes and R. rhizostachyum from which can be easily distinguish by its stem surface (slightly verrucose), leaf number, shape, and size (usually 1-basal leaf or rarely with a small one at base, reniform-rotate, 6.5–100 × 4.5–56 cm), achene shape and size (cordate-triangular, 8–15 × 8–16 mm). The distribution, notes on ecology, and conservation status of the new species are also provided.

The genus Scrophularia Linnaeus (1753: 619) (Scrophulariaceae) is represented by approximately 270 taxa (species and subspecies) worldwide (Olivencia 2009). It is restricted primarily to the North Temperate Zone (Carlbom 1968). The primary centre of diversity of Scrophularia is located in the Irano-Turanian region. The Mediterranean region is also an important area of diversity and for the endemism rate of Scrophularia (Scheunert & Heubl 2014).

A new perennial species, Silene nemrutensis (Silene sect. Spergulifoliae, Caryophyllaceae), is described and illustrated from SE-Anatolia. A macromorphological comparison with the similar species S. arguta is given as well as the ultrastructure of the seeds and pollen grains. Original photographs, geographical distribution, habitat and IUCN conservation status are also provided.

Bellevalia pseudolongipes (Asparagaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Siirt province in South Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Diagnostic morphological characters, a full description and detailed illustrations are provided. It is morphologically similar to B. longipes but easily differs in both several morphological characters and chromosome number. The somatic chromosome number was determined as 2n = 12 in B. pseudolongipes.

A new Middle Miocene Niveria Jousseaume, 1884 (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Trivioidea) from Hungary A new species of Niveria from the Middle Miocene (Badenian) of the Paratethys of Borsodbóta, Hungary is described. This species is characterized by its callused dorsum and dorsal depression. Niveria jozefgregoi sp. nov. is discussed with comparative species from the Badenian of Hungary, the Pliocene of the Mediterranean region, Florida and Recent species from Madeira and the Islas Galápagos.

Bellevalia sasonii is herein described as a new species from south-eastern Anatolia, distributed only in the Sason district, in the province of Batman (Turkey), where it grows in oak forest clearances. B.sasonii is morphologically similar to B. malatyaensis, from which can be distinguished by the bulb, leaf, scape, pedicel, bud lobes and capsule characters. A full description and detailed photographs of this new species are provided. In addition, the ecology and phenology of the new species, as well as its etymology and pollen characteristics, are presented and discussed.                According to the risk categories of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), B. sasonii was assessed as Endangered (EN). An updated distribution map of B. sasonii and related species are presented.

Bellevalia behcetii (Asparagaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Şırnak province in South Eastern Anatolia (Turkey). It is morphologically similar to B. paradoxa but easily differs in several morphological characters. Diagnostic morphological characters, a full description and detailed illustrations of the new species are provided. A quantitative morphometric analysis was carried out to check the diagnostic characters of Bellevalia behcetii with respect to morphologically related species. The somatic chromosome number was determined as 2n = 2x = 8 in B. behcetii. In addition, the ecology and phenology of the new species, as well as its etymology and the pollen characteristics, are presented and discussed. The conservation status of B. behcetii was assessed according to IUCN protocol. A distribution map of B. behcetii and related species is also presented.
