Bellevalia sasonii (Asparagaceae): a new species from Turkey

Bellevalia sasonii is herein described as a new species from south-eastern Anatolia, distributed only in the Sason district, in the province of Batman (Turkey), where it grows in oak forest clearances. B.sasonii is morphologically similar to B. malatyaensis, from which can be distinguished by the bulb, leaf, scape, pedicel, bud lobes and capsule characters. A full description and detailed photographs of this new species are provided. In addition, the ecology and phenology of the new species, as well as its etymology and pollen characteristics, are presented and discussed.                According to the risk categories of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), B. sasonii was assessed as Endangered (EN). An updated distribution map of B. sasonii and related species are presented.

Bellevalia behcetii (Asparagaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Şırnak province in South Eastern Anatolia (Turkey). It is morphologically similar to B. paradoxa but easily differs in several morphological characters. Diagnostic morphological characters, a full description and detailed illustrations of the new species are provided. A quantitative morphometric analysis was carried out to check the diagnostic characters of Bellevalia behcetii with respect to morphologically related species. The somatic chromosome number was determined as 2n = 2x = 8 in B. behcetii. In addition, the ecology and phenology of the new species, as well as its etymology and the pollen characteristics, are presented and discussed. The conservation status of B. behcetii was assessed according to IUCN protocol. A distribution map of B. behcetii and related species is also presented.

Bellevalia pseudolongipes (Asparagaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Siirt province in South Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Diagnostic morphological characters, a full description and detailed illustrations are provided. It is morphologically similar to B. longipes but easily differs in both several morphological characters and chromosome number. The somatic chromosome number was determined as 2n = 12 in B. pseudolongipes.

Lactuca anatolica is described as a new species from the province of Bingöl, and is known from only one locality. Its diagnostic characters are discussed, and taxonomic comments are presented. Lactuca anatolica is similar to L. leucoclada, L. orientalis subsp. nuristanica and L. orientalis subsp. orientalis but differs from these species in achenes, indumentum and leaves. Its achenes were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data on ecology and IUCN conservation status of the new species are also presented. A distribution map of the new and related species is provided.

Teucrium moleromesae, a new species belonging to the section Montanum, is described and illustrated. The new species is compared with two taxonomically related species, T. terciae and T. pumilum. T. moleromesae occurs in open arid mountain in the north of Almeria and Granada provinces (south-eastern Spain). In addition, a distribution map, iconography, and a description of the habitat and conservation status of the new species are presented.

Pternopetalum paucifoliolatum, a new species from Sixigou Scenic Area, Emeishan City, Sichuan Province, is proposed and described. Diagnostic morphological characters, full description, detailed illustrations, and a distribution map are provided. The new species is similar to P. porphyronotum in possessing the 1-pinnate leaves and the abaxially purple-red leaflets, but differs from the latter by shorter stature, fewer leaflets ((1–) 3–7) and rays (5–8), the leaflet margin white-ciliate. The new species, which is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), was only found on limestone cliffs. We also provide a new key to the species of Pternopetalum.

Gundelia siirtica sp. nov. is described from Siirt Province, Turkey. The new species appears to be most similar to G. mesopotamica and G. armeniaca, from which it differs in plant height and indumentum, size and number of synflorescences, colour of corolla externally and internally, shape and size of fruit complex (disseminule). A comprehensive description of this species is provided, with detailed photographs, a distribution map, a habitat description, a vernacular name and an IUCN conservation status.

Myrcia adulterina, a new species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, is here described, illustrated and compared with morphologically related species. Additionally, its distribution map and a preliminary conservation status are presented. The new species is here inferred as belonging to Myrcia sect. Reticulosae due its leaves with raised venation, staminal ring densely pilose, hypanthium prolonged in a tube with glabrous inner walls and 3-locular ovaries. Within this section, the species is morphologically related to Myrcia pubipetala, from which it can be distinguished through the laxly reticulate leaf venation and thyrsoid inflorescences with all axes strongly flattened and striated when dry. Myrcia adulterina was misidentified during at least 15 years in herbaria under the name Marlierea tomentosa (currently synonym of Myrcia strigipes, a species belonging to Myrcia sect. Aulomyrcia), which is also morphologically similar. A brief discussion clarifying the morphological differences between these species is also presented.

Rheum telianum is described as a new species from Kayatepe village (south-eastern Anatolia, Turkey). It is morphologically related to the west-central Asiatic R. ribes and R. rhizostachyum from which can be easily distinguish by its stem surface (slightly verrucose), leaf number, shape, and size (usually 1-basal leaf or rarely with a small one at base, reniform-rotate, 6.5–100 × 4.5–56 cm), achene shape and size (cordate-triangular, 8–15 × 8–16 mm). The distribution, notes on ecology, and conservation status of the new species are also provided.

A new species of Cephalaria, C. bigazzii Bacch., Brullo & Giusso (Dipsacaceae), is described and illustrated. It is a typical chasmophyte, exclusive to a small area of SW Sardinia where it grows together with several other rare endemics. It belongs to the Cephalaria squamiflora group, showing close relationships with C. mediterranea and C. balearica. Its ecology, distribution and conservation status are examined. A distribution map of the new species and related species is provided. A new status and combination is proposed for Cephalaria ebusitana.
