Three new species of Graphidaceae (Ostropales, Ascomycota) from Atlantic Forest in Northeast Brazil

Three species of Graphidaceae are here described as new to science, based on material found in the Reserva Biológica Guaribas and Área de Proteção Ambiental da Barra do Rio Mamanguape, in Paraíba State, Northeastern Brazil. Astrochapsa submuralis E.L. Lima, Lücking & M. Cáceres, with thickly pruinose ascomata and small submuriform ascospores, Chapsa angustispora E.L. Lima, Lücking & M. Cáceres, with a combination of inspersed hymenium and comparatively narrow muriform ascospores, and Graphis cilindrospora E.L. Lima, Lücking & M. Cáceres, with very large and narrow muriform, brownish ascospores. These findings underline the importance of the northern Atlantic rain forest, including the poorly studied Restinga vegetation, for the continuous discovery of new lichen taxa.

A new species of the genus Phyllodytes is described from the State of Bahia, in the Atlantic Rain Forest of Northeastern Brazil. Phyllodytes praeceptor sp. nov. can be differentiated from other species of Phyllodytes by its medium size (SVL 20.7–25.8 mm in males); odontoids moderately developed; vocal sac externally visible; eyes large and prominent; dorsum homogenously cream, except for a few scattered spots and blotches; venter areolate with two parallel, paramedial lines of larger tubercles; few tubercles in the ventral surface of thighs, the largest being the medial one; a large tubercle on the skin around the tibio-tarsal articulation; nuptial pad rounded and moderately expanded.

A new species of the genus Liotyphlops, known from three localities in the states of Alagoas and Bahia, in the Atlantic Rain Forest of Northeastern Brazil, is described. Liotyphlops trefauti sp. nov. is distinguished from all other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: four scales contacting the posterior edge of prefrontal; one scale contacting the posterior edge of nasal, between the second supralabial and the frontal; five scales in the first vertical row of lateral head scales; 22-22-22 scales around body; 520–543 dorsal scales; 499–532 ventral scales; absence of eye spot; and dorsal and ventral color bright yellowish-brown to reddish-brown.

The orchid bee fauna of Estação Ecológica de Murici (ESEC Murici), in the state of Alagoas, one of the largest remnants of the Atlantic Rain Forest in northeastern Brazil, was surveyed for the first time. Seven hundred and twenty-one orchid-bee males belonging to 17 species were collected from the 3rd to the 10th of September, 2009. Besides the recently described Eulaema (Apeulaema) felipei Nemésio, 2010, three other species recorded at ESEC Murici deserve further attention: Euglossa amazonica Dressler, 1982b, recorded for the first time outside the Amazon Basin; Euglossa milenae Bembé, 2007 and Euglossa analis Westwood, 1840, both recorded for the first time in the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil north to São Francisco river. These results together with previous samplings in the state of Alagoas reveal that at least 22 orchid-bee species are now known to occur there. Three other species not recorded for Alagoas yet are known from the neighbor states of Sergipe, Pernambuco, and Paraíba. An identification key to all 25 species of Euglossina known to occur in the states of Alagoas, Sergipe, Pernambuco, Paraíba, and Rio Grande do Norte is provided.

A new species of Dendrophidion belonging to the D. dendrophis species group is described from Mata do Engenho Coimbra (08°59’S, 35°53’W; 526 m above sea level), Municipality of Ibateguara, in the Atlantic Rainforest remnants of the State of Alagoas, northeastern Brazil. Dendrophidion atlantica sp. nov. is characterized by having 154–163 ventral scales, 140–160 subcaudal scales, tail length 62.2–74.8% of snout–vent length, collar absent, head uniformly brown and dorsal ground color brown, paler on anterior third, with cream transversal lines (one half a scale long), bordered anteriorly and posteriorly by dark brown lines (one half a scale long), distributed from the neck to the tail; hemipenis single, subcylindrical, unicapitate, and unicalyculate; calyces large, well defined, papillate; a series of 12 large spines just below the capitulum, on the asulcate and lateral sides; a series of four spines, two large laterals and two small between them, in the basal region of the asulcate side of the organ body; two large spines on the lateral distal areas of the sulcate side of the hemipenial body; sulcus spermaticus centrolineal, bifurcating at the tip of the capitulum.

Abstract A new species of Trichostrongyloidea (Nematoda: Heligmonellidae), Hassalstrongylus lauroi n. sp., is described from specimens collected from the small intestine of the rodent Hylaeamys seuanezi in the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil (Igrapiúna, state of Bahia). The genus Hassalstrongylus includes 17 species, which parasitize rodents occurring in the Neotropical and Nearctic regions. It differs from the genus Stilestrongylus through its smaller number of ridges in the synlophe and through the size of the genital cone. The main taxonomic characteristics of this new species are the subsymmetrical caudal bursa of type 2-2-1, ray 8 branching out at the base of the dorsal trunk, right lobe smaller than the left, and rays 4 and 5 of robust nature. In addition, the ornamental ray 5 and the robustness of ray 4 on the male caudal bursa, along with the modification of the ridges of the posterior end of the female, allow us to consider the specimens found to be a new species.

Three new species of Erythroxylum (Erythroxylaceae) from the Atlantic Forest of Northeastern Brazil are described and illustrated: Erythroxylum stenopetalum from the states of Paraíba and Pernambuco, and E. rhodappendiculatum and E. tapacuranum from Pernambuco. Due to their restricted distribution, and in accordance with the IUCN criteria, the new species are provisionally considered as Critically Endangered (CR) or Data Deficient (DD).Geographical distribution, habitat, and comments on their morphological affinities are provided.

Ituglanis agreste, a new species of catfish, is described from a tributary stream of the rio Gongogi drainage, rio de Contas basin, Bahia State, northeastern Brazil, from a transition area between the Atlantic Rain Forest and the semi-arid Caatinga savanna. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: elongate interopercle plate with high number of odontodes (26-30), high number of ribs (5-6), fewer vertebrae (36), number of branchiostegal rays (7), number of pectoral-fin rays (i,6) and absence of s1 pore. Comparisons with other Ituglanis species and putative plesiomorphic characters are presented. Some comments about conservation of Ituglanis species from northeastern Brazil are also made.

A new species, Coleodactylus elizae sp. nov., is described for the Atlantic Forest of Northeastern Brazil. It is distinguishedfrom other Coleodactylus species by the following character combinations: one nearly completely divided or two rostralscales, dorsal scales smooth and four scales forming the ungual sheath. The color pattern consists of white spots distributed over a pinkish background. Coleodactylus elizae sp. nov. is a forest species inhabiting bromeliads.

Three new species of Otostigmus Porat, 1876 from Brazilian Atlantic Forest are described. Otostigmus beckeri sp. n. andO. lanceolatus sp. n. are described from the state of Bahia and O. giupponii sp. n. from the state of Espírito Santo. InBrazil, the otostigmine scolopendrid genus Otostigmus comprises 22 species. A summary of Brazilian Otostigmus speciesis presented with new distribution records, taxonomic remarks when appropriate and an identification key. Otostigmus sul-catus Meinert, 1886 is recorded for the first time from Brazil; the Andean Otostigmus silvestrii Kraepelin 1903, previouslyrecorded from Brazil, is here considered not to be present in this country. Eight nominal species are regarded here as newsynonyms. Five of them—Otostigmus pradoi Bücherl, 1939, O. longistigma Bücherl, 1939, O. longipes Bücherl, 1939,O. langei Bücherl, 1946 and O. dentifusus Bücherl, 1946—are based on females of O. tibialis Brölemann, 1902. O. latipesBücherl, 1954 is conspecific with and is considered a junior synonym of O. sulcatus Meinert, 1886; O. limbatus diminutusBücherl, 1946 is a junior synonym of O. limbatus Meinert, 1886 and O. fossulatus Attems, 1928 is a junior synonym of O. goeldii Brölemann, 1898. A lectotype is designated for O. goeldii.
