<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> The hippocampus is relevant to cognitive function in schizophrenia (SCZ) and mood disorder patients. Although not anatomically uniform, it is clearly divided into subfields. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between hippocampal subfield volume and cognitive function in patients with SCZ, bipolar disorder (BP), and major depressive disorder (MDD). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> The study included 21 patients with SCZ, 22 with BP, and 21 with MDD and 25 healthy controls (HCs). Neurocognitive function was assessed using the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia. We obtained hippocampal subfield volumes using FreeSurfer 6.0. We compared the volumes of the hippocampal subfield between the 4 groups and ascertained correlation between the cognitive composite score and hippocampal subfield volume in each group. <b><i>Results:</i></b> The SCZ group had significantly lower cognitive composite score than the BP, MDD, and HC groups. In the SCZ group, the left and right hippocampus-amygdala transition area and right subiculum and right presubiculum volumes were significantly reduced compared to those in the HC group. The left presubiculum volumes in the SCZ group were significantly reduced compared to those in the MDD group. Subfield volumes did not significantly differ between the BP, MDD, and HC groups. Interestingly, in the SCZ group, volumes of the right CA1, right molecular layer of the hippocampus, and right granule cell and molecular layer of the dentate gyrus were significantly correlated with the cognitive composite score. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> Patients with SCZ had poorer cognitive function, which is related to their hippocampal pathology, than those with mood disorders.

As research of the high cycle fatigue of carburized gear steel could not meet the status quo of longer and longer service lives, research of very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) performance has become the focus of current research. The VHCF properties of case-hardening steel 18CrNiMo7-6 after being carburized with gradient hardness distribution were investigated by means of ultrasonic fatigue tests. The results showed that the carburized specimens with a case hardness of 705 HV and core hardness of 530 HV showed VHCF phenomenon, and the fatigue lives continuously increased to even 109 cycles as the stress amplitude decreased to about 500 MPa. Observations of the fracture surfaces of the fatigue specimens showed that the fatigue crack initiation sites were located in the transition area with the hardness at about 580 HV. It was found that the transition area had low VHCF properties, since the core did not show VHCF phenomenon, and the case had a higher hardness. A fine microstructure was observed in the granular bright facet (GBF) area, and the stress intensity factor ΔKGBF was measured to be 3.04 MPam−1/2. The 109 cycles fatigue life was predicted based on the inclusion size, and the 1010 cycles fatigue life was 490 MPa based on the prediction model.

Two new species of Cryptanthus from Bahia State, in northeastern Brazil, are described and illustrated. Cryptanthus apiculatantherus occurs in Atlantic Forest and Cryptanthus brevibracteatus was discovered in a transition area between Atlantic Forest and Caatinga. Cryptanthus apiculatantherus and C. bibarrensis have similar stem lengths and leaf blade shapes, but differ mainly by the stem diameter, width of the leaf sheaths, sepal and petal color, anther apex shape, and length and width of the ovary. Cryptanthus brevibracteatus and C. warren-loosei have a similar leaf blade color and are geographically close to each other, but differ by the number of flowers in the apical cluster of flowers of the inflorescence, length and width of the floral bracts, length of the sepals, connation of the sepals and length of the sepal lobes. Data about the geographic distribution, habitat, phenology, conservation status, taxonomic comments, a distribution map and photographs of the new species are provided. In addition, there are tables included that compare the new species to morphologically similar species.

The estimation of forest biomass is gaining interest not only for calculating harvesting volumes but also for carbon storage estimation. However, bark (and carbon) compounds are not distributed equally along the stem. Particularly when looking at Scots pine, a radical change in the structure of the bark along the stem can be noted. At the bark transition area, the bark changes from thick and rough to thin and smooth. The aim of our study was (1) to analyze the height of the bark transition area where the bark structure changes and (2) to analyze the effect of cardinal direction on the bark thickness. Regression analyses and forward selection were performed including measured tree height, DBH, bark thickness, crown base height and upper and lower heights of the bark transition areas of 375 trees. While the cardinal direction had no effect on bark thickness, DBH was found to have a significant effect on the heights of the bark transition areas, with stand density and tree height having a minor additional effect. These variables can be used to estimate timber volume (without bark) with higher accuracy and to predict the carbon storage potential of forest biomass according to different tree compartments and compounds.

AbstractGreen turtles (Chelonia mydas) are seasonal breeders with a time lag between mating and nesting periods. We therefore investigated whether female turtles store sperm like some other animals by histologically and ultrastructurally analyzing oviducts collected from three mature female free-ranging green turtles during the breeding season in the Ogasawara Islands, Japan. The oviduct comprised an infundibulum, magnum, isthmus, uterus, and vagina. Sperm was found in the isthmus of all turtles examined. Some spermatozoa were found in the duct and acini of glands in the isthmus of two turtles with oviducts containing eggs, and a few were also located in the transition area between the uterus and vagina of one of the turtles. On the other hand, we also found abundant spermatozoa on the luminal surface of the isthmus of one turtle captured during mating. In most reptiles, fertilization occurs in the infundibulum or albumen region, and thus the isthmus near those areas might be suitable for storing sperm in female turtles.

ABSTRACT The “petrological Moho” recognized in the Jurassic Vourinos Ophiolite (northern Greece) was the first “crust-mantle” boundary described within a fossil oceanic lithosphere. Early observations suggested a Cenozoic brittle-field block rotation of the petrological Moho transition area resulting in an oblique clockwise rotation of ∼100°, but a brittle fault system responsible for the mechanism of this rotation was never located. A modern interpretation of research dating from the 1960s to the present documents the occurrence of a diverse set of ductile structures overprinting this primary intra-oceanic feature. The following observations from our original “Moho” studies in the Vourinos complex are still pertinent: the contact between the upper mantle units and the magmatic crustal sequence is in situ and intrusional in nature; high-temperature intragranular ductile deformation (mantle creep at temperatures from around 1200 °C down to ∼900 °C) fabrics terminate at the crust-mantle boundary; the overlying oceanic crustal rocks display geochemical fractionation patterns analogous to crustal rocks in the in situ oceanic lithosphere. Since these original studies, however, understanding the mechanisms of ductile deformation and ridge crest processes have advanced, and hence we can now interpret the older data and recent observations in a new paradigm of oceanic lithosphere formation. Our major interpretational breakthrough includes the following phenomena: lower temperature, intergranular deformation of ∼900 °C to 700 °C extends from the upper mantle tectonites up into the lower crustal cumulate section; the origin of mineral lineations within adcumulate crustal rocks as remnants of ductile deformation during early phases of magmatic crystallization; syn-magmatic folding and rotation of the cumulate section; the tectonic significance of flaser gabbro and late gabbroic intrusions in the crustal sequence; and the relevance and significance of a cumulate troctolite unit within the crustal sequence. These observations collectively point to an important process of a ductile-field, syn-magmatic rotation of the Moho transition area. The most plausible mechanism explaining such a rotation is proto-transform faulting deformation near the ridge crest. By recognizing and distinguishing structures that resulted from such initial rotational deformation in the upper mantle peridotites of ophiolites, future field-based structural, petrographic, and petrological studies can better document the mode of the initiation of oceanic transform faults.

The façade is an architectural element that is to show the functional and meaning of the building. The façade design of a house is generally on the of the basic considerations for consumers to buy. In addition, the face design has always been a promotional information in the marketing mis that used by housing developers. This study was intended to identity the effect of product and façade design towards consumer preferences in lower-middle housing. The object study was Pondok Indah Matani housing in Kupang, NTT. This study used experimental approach by manipulating research variables. The manipulated variables were product and façade design, while the influenced variables were consumer preferences. The determination of sample used purposive sampling method with a technical survey using a questionnaire. The result of study stated that the product and façade design had a significant effect on consumer preferences, through (1) the application of contrasting colors, (2) the firm boundaries in transition area in front of the house and (3) the complexity of the product dan façade design should be not too complicated so that it was easy to care post purchase.
