Cactaceae Juss. is a family which comprises 124 genera and about 1438 species distributed from Canada to Patagonia, with the largest diversity in tropical and subtropical regions of Americas (see e.g., Hunt et al. 2006). The flora of Brazil includes 39 Cactaceae genera and 261 species, of which 14 genera and 54 species can be found the Rio de Janeiro state, highlighting the importance of this state to the biodiversity of Brazilian cacti (see BFG 2015). These species are highly affected by anthropic disturbances, which cause rapid habitat destruction, especially affecting the narrowly distributed endemic taxa, with 31% of the family being threatened, demonstrating the high anthropogenic pressures on the biodiversity in arid lands (Goettsch et al. 2015).

Two new species of Neomarica (Trimezieae, Iridoideae, Iridaceae) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Southeast Brazil, are described and illustrated: Neomarica mauroi, endemic to the municipality of Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro State; and Neomarica sancti-vicentei, endemic to the municipality of São Vicente, São Paulo State.

Here, we propose Uanauna gen. nov. (Lampyridae: Photinini), a new monotypic genus of fireflies endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Uanauna angaporan sp. nov. occurs in Submontane and Montane forest habitats at the Serra do Mar mountain range, in the Southern Fluminense region (Rio de Janeiro State, Southeastern Brazil). The new species was recorded both on the mainland, at the municipality of Itaguaí and Rio de Janeiro, and at the continental island of Ilha Grande, in Angra dos Reis, at the Rio de Janeiro State. An occurrence map and illustrations of diagnostic features are given for the new taxa, as well as a key to Lucidotina genera in Brazil.

The Neotropical genus Forcepsioneura Lencioni 1999 is composed of six described species (Garrison et al. 2010) endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic forest (Machado 2001; Garrison et al. 2010). The knowledge of the immature stages is restricted to the inclusion of the genus in two keys of Protoneuridae genera (Costa et al. 2004; Neiss & Hamada 2012) and brief comments on labium characters (Costa et al. 2004), without formal description. Here we describe the last instar larva of Forcepsioneura sancta (Hagen in Selys 1860) based on specimens collected in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil.

This study was developed aiming to compile data concerning the occurrence and distribution of social wasp species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, as well as recording exclusive and rare species. For this purpose, we compiled studies from the specialized literature and created a table containing the species occurrence in the different states which present the phytogeographic domain. A total of 170 species was recorded, corresponding to almost a half of the richness of social wasps in Brazil, including 50 endemic, with highlight to Rio de Janeiro state, which nevertheless is insufficiently sampled. This way, from this work, it is concluded that Brazilian Atlantic Forest must be seen as an important refuge for Polistinae.

The Atlantic Forest in the state of Rio de Janeiro is extremely fragmented and reduced in its original extension. Although there are a great number of studies related to the biome, few lists are available for this region. The present study seeks to get information on the mammals of a remnant forest in Serra da Concórdia, an area from which no information is currently available. The rapid mammal's survey was accomplished by use of pitfalls, live traps, transects, mist nets, and camera traps. We recorded 37 terrestrial species that represent 22.3 % of Rio de Janeiro state mammal species. Among the recorded species, six are endemic of the Atlantic Forest, one is endemic of the state, and eight are in the state list of threatened or presumably threatened species. The area presents great mammal richness and an increasing effort will probably reveal the presence of additional species.

We provide new records of three globally threatened species of bird belonging to the family Cotingidae: Procnias nudicollis (Vieillot, 1817), Xipholena atropurpurea (Wied, 1820), and Cotinga maculata (Statius Müller, 1776). These findings in non-protected areas of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and, for C. maculata, at higher altitudes than previously reported, improve our understanding of the distribution of these threatened species and can aid in conservation efforts to protect them.

We report here on an albino specimen of Schizolecis guntheri caught in the rio Bonito in the rio Macaé basin, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. The hypothesis that albinism is more common in fishes with cryptobiotic and/or nocturnal habits is strengthened by additional records of this chromatic anomaly.

Medium and large-sized terrestrial mammals develop important functions in ecosystems maintenance. However, this group is the most vulnerable to local extinctions, through habitat loss or hunting. This study inventoried the community of medium and large mammals in the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçú (REGUA), Cachoeiras de Macacu, RJ, providing data on species composition, richness and abundance. Species were registered through the use of camera traps, sign survey and visual encounters on pre-existing trails and roads. The study was conducted from January to October 2012, with each month considered as a sample unit. An effort of 1568 cameras-day and 120 km traveled, resulted on 302 records of 22 species of medium and large-sized mammals, belonging to eight orders. This value corresponds to more than three-quarters of the richness described from this group in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro state. Five species are under some level of regional, national or global threat. Three game species, Pecari tajacu, Cuniculus paca and Dasyprocta leporina were abundant in the area. The observed richness was comparable to that found in other studies conducted in rain forests. Thus, for its high number of species, including those under some degree of threat, we conclude that REGUA is an important area to mammal conservation, especially in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro state.

We present the first record of the Dipsadidae snakes Xenopholis scalaris for the state of Rio de Janeiro and a general distribution map for this species. This record for the Brazilian Atlantic Forest expands the known geographical distribution of X. scalaris and reveals that its populations might not be isolated or disjunctive, but rather rare in this biome. We also provide some recommendations for future conservation of X. scalaris.
