Gongronella zunyiensis sp. nov. (Cunninghamellaceae, Mucorales) isolated from rhizosphere soil in China

During a survey of rhizosphere soil fungi of Eucommia ulmoides in China, three Gongronella strains were isolated. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these strains grouped into a separate subclade, closely related to Gongronella sichuanensis. The new strains could be distinguished from G. sichuanensis by the smooth-walled, subglobose, or conical-cylindrical apophyses. Both phylogenetic analysis and morphological characteristics supported the three strains being a new species, named as Gongronella zunyiensis.

A new polypore, Ceriporia albomellea, collected from tropical China, is described and illustrated based on morphological characteristics and molecular evidence. It is characterized by thin, resupinate basidiome with a white subiculum, cottony margin, white to cinnamon-buff pores, clavate cystidia and oblong-ellipsoid basidiospores measured as 3.1–3.8 × 1.7–2 µm. Phylogenetic analysis based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions and nuclear large subunit (nLSU) ribosomal RNA gene regions supported C. albomellea as a distinctive species belonging to Ceriporia.

Species in Lecanicillium are pathogens that parasitize various arthropods, nematodes, and other fungi. In an investigation of intestinal fungi associated with Marmota monax in China, three strains belonging to the genus Lecanicillium were isolated from the fresh fecal samples. Based on multi-locus phylogenetic analysis of the combined sequences (ITS, LSU, SSU, TEF, RPB1 and RPB2) and morphological characteristics, all species in Lecanicillium were well-separated. The three intestinal strains were assigned to a new species described as L. coprophilum in this paper. The new species differs morphologically from other Lecanicillium species by its dimensions of conidiogenous cells and conidia, the shape of conidia, dictyochlamydospores and swollen hyphae. The differences of L. coprophilum from other Lecanicillium species and closely related taxa are briefly discussed.

A new species of Polyporales, named as Skeletocutis yunnanensis, was collected on angiosperm wood in northern Yunnan Province, southwestern China. It is described based on morphological characteristics and molecular evidence. The species belongs to the Skeletocutis subincarnata complex, but differs morphologically from all known species of the genus by white, cream to buff pores surface, angular pores mostly 5–6 per mm with entire mouths, a dimitic hyphal structure both in trama and subiculum, generative hyphae in whole basidiocarps covered by fine crystals, skeletal hyphae unchanged in KOH, not agglutinated, allantoid basidiospores measured as 3.5–4.5 × 1.0–1.2 µm, and growth on angiosperm wood. Phylogenetic analysis based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions and nuclear large subunit (nLSU) ribosomal RNA gene regions indicated that the new species grouped with Skeletocutis and nested in the tyromyces clade.

A new species, Tylencholaimushelanensissp. n., extracted from the rhizosphere soil of unidentified grasses from Helan Mountain, Inner Mongolia, China was identified. The new species is characterized by having a body length of 0.93–1.07 mm with the lip region approximately one-quarter of the body diameter at the posterior end of the neck region wide; female didelphic-amphidelphic; pars proximalis vaginae violin-shaped. Males were not found. SEM observations of the new species were made and a phylogenetic analysis of both the 18S rDNA and the D2-D3 region of 28S rDNA is presented.

A new species, Colletotrichum menglaense, isolated from air in Mengla, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China, was characterized and described combining morphological characteristics and multigene phylogenetic analysis. Morphologically, it is characterized by oblong, sometimes slightly constricted, micro-guttulate conidia and simple obovoid to ellipsoidal appressoria. Phylogenetic analysis of the ITS, ACT, CHS, and GAPDH sequences showed that C. menglaense belongs to the C. gloeosporioides complex. The pathogenicity of C. menglaense on fruits of several crop plants, including strawberry, orange, grape, tomato, and blueberry, was tested and confirmed by the re-isolation of C. menglaense.

Basidiocarps of an undescribed dacrymycetous species were collected from Pinus densiflora forests in Japan and described as a new species, Femsjonia uniseptata, based on both morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. This new species is characterized by having discoid to applanate basidiocarps with white hairs at the margins; thin-walled internal and marginal hyphae with clamp connections; and 0–1-septate basidiospores. A detailed description, line drawings, phylogenetic tree to show the placement of F. uniseptata and comparison of the new species with allied taxa are provided.

The genus Tuber is a lineage of diverse ectomycorrhizal, hypogeous, sequestrate ascomycete fungi that are native to temperate forests in the Northern Hemisphere. Recently, many new species of Tuber have been described in North America and Asia, based on morphological characteristics and molecular data. Here we describe and illustrate a new species, Tuberincognitum, based upon phylogenetic analysis and morphological description. We also present a new record for Tuberanniae in México. These two Tuber species are distributed in the Transmexican Volcanic Belt in the states of México, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro and Tlaxcala at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,200 meters. These species are associated with Pinus (T.anniae) and Quercus forests (T.incognitum).

A new poroid fungus, Nigrofomes submelanoporus, from tropical China, is described and illustrated based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. The new species is characterized by perennial, resupinate to effused-reflexed, woody-hard and dark gray to almost black basidiocarps, lacerate dissepiments, a monomitic hyphal system, the presence of cystidioles and hyphal pegs, and broadly ellipsoid basidiospores (4–5.1 × 3.1–4.3 µm). Molecular analysis based on ITS sequences demonstrates the phylogenetic position of the new species in Nigrofomes. The discriminating characteristics between the new species and closely related species are discussed.

Sedum nanlingense (Crassulaceae), a new species from Guangxi, is described and illustrated here. We analyzed its morphological characteristics, which are largely similar to S. onychopetalum and S. kiangnanense. However, the morphology of this new species differs from other taxa in some important ways, including its 3-merous flowers, which contain six stamens and three carpels. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences resolved S. nanlingense as a distinct clade, lending further support to its classification. Phylogenetic analysis showed that this new species is closely related to S. onychopetalum and S. kiangnanense.

A strain of the fungal genus Mariannaea, isolated from decayed leaves of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), was identified to be a new species based on its molecular phylogeny and morphology. Molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that the fungus belongs to a clade containing M. punicea and related species (M. punicea-related species) and that it forms a lineage independent of these species. Microscopic morphological comparisons with M. punicea-related species indicated that the new isolate differs with respect to the width of the phialides and length of the conidiophores. Comparison of macroscopic morphological characteristics revealed that M. punicea-related species are characterized by reddish-purple colonies, whereas the new isolate lacks this distinctive pigmentation. Moreover, the surface structure of the colonies of this fungus has a distinct irregular undulate pattern toward the margins. Given that this isolate can be clearly distinguished from the known M. punicea-related species, we consider the fungus to be a newly identified species, for which we propose the name Mariannaea imbricata sp. nov.
