During our surveys of freshwater fungi on submerged wood in the Greater Mekong Subregion, a rhexodenticula-like taxon was collected, described and illustrated. The new collection is identified based on analyses of combined LSU, SSU, ITS and TEF sequence data, and morphological comparison with other Rhexodenticula species. According to the morphology and molecular analysis, our collection is not known before and hence, we introduce here as Rhexodenticula aquatica sp. nov. This species is characterized by macronematous, subcylindrical, unbranched conidiophores, polyblastic, terminal conidiogenous cells and fusiform, 3-septate, verruculose conidia, and schizolytic conidial secession. Rhexodenticula is referred to Sordariomycetidae genera incertae sedis due to its unstable phylogenetic placement in Sordariomycetidae.

Pseudodactylaria fusiformis sp. nov. was collected during an investigation of freshwater fungi along a north-south latitudinal gradient in the Asian region. Evidence for the new species is provided by morphological comparison and sequence data analysis. Pseudodactylaria fusiformis differs from other species in having hyaline conidiophores and fusiform, 0–1-septate hyaline conidia without a sheath. Phylogenetic analysis based on combined ITS and LSU sequence data was carried out to determine the phylogenetic placement of the species. Six Pseudodactylaria taxa clustered together and formed a monotypic clade representing the genus, and five species are well recognized. Pseudodactylaria fusiformis and P. camporesiana share a sister relationship and they are phylogenetically distinct species. A detailed description and illustration are provided, as well as the comparisons with similar taxa.

A collection of lignicolous freshwater fungi in the Greater Mekong Subregion resulted in four interesting dematiaceous hyphomycetes with similar morphology. The taxa had sporodochial colonies, micronematous to semi-macronematous conidiophores and subglobose, ellipsoidal to broadly pyriform, 0–1-septate, dark brown to black conidia. Based on morphological characters and phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, SSU, ITS and RPB2 sequence data, Parafuscosporella aquatica sp. nov., P. pyriformis sp. nov., Conioscypha tenebrosa and Vanakripa minutiellipsoidea are identified. Parafuscosporella aquatica and P. pyriformis cluster within Fuscosporellaceae (Fuscosporellales), while C. tenebrosa and V. minutiellipsoidea are placed within Conioscyphales. This is the first report on the phylogenetic placement of Vanakripa. Descriptions and illustrations of the new collections are provided.

A new species, Pseudodactylaria brevis, is described, illustrated and compared with other Pseudodactylaria and Dactylaria-like taxa. Evidence for the new species is provided by morphological comparison and sequence data analyses. Pseudodactylaria brevis can be distinguished from other Pseudodactylaria and Dactylaria-like species by its short hyaline conidiophores and fusiform, 1-septate hyaline conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of LSU and ITS sequence data was carried out to determine the phylogenetic placement of the species and confirm the taxonomic status of Pseudodactylariaceae.

During a survey on diversity of freshwater fungi along a north-south latitudinal gradient in Asia, three fresh specimens of Minimelanolocus were collected from submerged wood in streams in northwestern Yunnan Province, China. Based on their distinct morphological features and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU and SSU sequence data, Minimelanolocus nujiangensis and M. clavatus are described as new species and M. submersus was recollected from Yunnan, China. Illustrations and descriptions with notes of the three species are provided. This study increases the known diversity of Minimelanolocus and enriches freshwater fungal resources.

Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, rpb2, tub2 and ITS sequence data of representative Xylariales taxa indicated that Diabolocovidia, Didymobotryum and Vamsapriya cluster together and form a distinct clade in Xylariales. Morphological comparison also shows their distinctiveness from other families of Xylariales. Therefore, we introduce it as a novel family, Vamsapriyaceae. Based on morphological characteristics, Podosporium and Tretophragmia, which were previously classified in Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, are now included in the Vamsapriyaceae. In addition, three Vamsapriya species, V. chiangmaiensis sp. nov, V. uniseptata sp. nov, and V. indica are described and illustrated in this paper.

Two new species, Castanediellabrevis and C.monoseptata, are described, illustrated and compared with other Castanediella taxa. Evidence for the new species is provided by morphological comparison and sequence data analyses. Castanediellabrevis can be distinguished from other Castanediella species by the short hyaline conidiophores and fusiform, aseptate hyaline conidia, while C.monoseptata differs from other Castanediella species by its unbranched conidiophores and fusiform, curved, 0–1-sepatate, hyaline conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of combined ITS and LSU sequence data was carried out to determine the phylogenetic placement of the species. A synopsis of hitherto described Castanediella species is provided. In addition, Castanediella is also compared with morphologically similar-looking genera such as Idriella, Idriellopsis, Microdochium, Neoidriella, Paraidriella and Selenodriella.

A new species Alfaria avenellae, is described, illustrated and compared with other Alfaria species. Evidence for the new species is provided by morphological comparison and sequence data analyses. Alfaria avenellae can easily be distinguished from other Alfaria species by its distinct synnemata, long conidiophores (up to 350 μm) and pale green to dark green conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of combined LSU and ITS sequence data was carried out to determine the phylogenetic placement of this new species within the genus Alfaria and provide evidence to support the establishment of our new species.

Diversity of lignicolous freshwater fungi in northwestern Yunnan, China is currently being studied. Four fresh collections of tubeufiaceous taxa were collected and identified. Among of them, Parahelicomyces yunnanensis sp. nov and Tubeufia nigroseptum sp. nov. are introduced as new species based on morphology and molecular phylogenetic analysis of combined ITS, SSU, TEF1-α and RPB2 sequence data. The detailed descriptions and illustrations of the new species are provided, as well as the morphological comparison with similar taxa are discussed. Two strains of Neohelicomyces aquaticus and Tubeufia cylindrothecia are provided.

A novel species, Appendiculella viticis, was collected on freshly fallen leaves of Vitex canescens (Lamiaceae) in Chiang Rai, Thailand. This species is unique in having vertically striate, conoid cells, without larviform appendages and fusiform to ellipsoidal, guttulate ascospores. Morphological comparison and phylogenetic analysis of combined LSU and ITS sequence data provide evidence that the species is novel. Morphological comparisons of Appendiculella species are provided. The molecular data provides evidence to support the distinctness of Appendiculella.
