A new Gladiolus (Iridaceae) species from East Anatolia (Turkey): Gladiolus hamzaoglui

Gladiolus hamzaoglui (Iridaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Erzincan province in Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. It resembles G. halophilus by its secund inflorescence, obovoid fruit, and winged seed, and is related to G. anatolicus based on its leaf and flower features. Also it is compared to G. illyricus because of having some leaf, flower features, and winged seed characteristics. Its distribution, habitat and ecology, etymology, conservation status and diagnostic morphological, and taxonomic features with familiar species are discussed in this paper. Additionally, pollen and seed micromorphological characteristics of G. hamzaoglui, G. halophilus, and G. anatolicus are examined and compared using LM and SEM analyses. IUCN conservation status of G. hamzaoglui is suggested as Endangered (EN) category.

Ranunculus solhanensis sp. nov. (Ranunculaceae) is described from Bingöl province (Eastern Anatolia) in Turkey. It is related to R. bulbilliferus and R. munzurensis also distributed in east Anatolia. The new species is easily distinguished from its relatives by morphological features of stem, corolla, stamen and achenes. Achenes and pollen characteristics have been assessed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Distribution, ecological data and IUCN conservation status of the new species are also provided.

Alkanna malatyana (Boraginaceae) is described as a new species to science. It is endemic to the eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. A. malatyana is an obligated chasmophytic species, which colonizes on limestone rocky cliffs, known from a single locality in Levent Canyon, located in Malatya Province. It is related to A. mughlae and it shows some morphological similarities with A. confusa and A. kotschyana, but it clearly differs from them based on the morphological differences presented in the species description. In addition, the conservation status, a distribution map, and notes on the biogeography and ecology of the new species are given.

Prangos aricakensis is described and illustrated as a new species from eastern Anatolia (Turkey), where it is known from a single locality in Arıcak (Elazığ) district. Its diagnostic characters are discussed and taxonomic comments are presented. Prangos aricakensis is similar to P. turcica, P. hulusii, P. ilanae and P. trifida, but it differs in hair, leaf, bract, bracteole and fruit characteristics. Fruit and pollen characteristics were investigated using ligth (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data on ecology and IUCN conservation status are also shown.

Centaurea malatyensis Ş. Kültür & M. Bona sp. nova (Asteraceae) is described as new to science from East Anatolia (B6: Malatya: Turkey). It is morphologically similar to C. leptophylla but differs mainly in its stem, basal and cauline leaf shape and size, achene, pappus and phyllary appendages. The geographical distribution of the new species and its relatives is mapped. The ecology and conservation status of the new species is also presented. Micromorphological structures of achenes of C. malatyensis and C. leptophylla are examined by SEM.

Rheum telianum is described as a new species from Kayatepe village (south-eastern Anatolia, Turkey). It is morphologically related to the west-central Asiatic R. ribes and R. rhizostachyum from which can be easily distinguish by its stem surface (slightly verrucose), leaf number, shape, and size (usually 1-basal leaf or rarely with a small one at base, reniform-rotate, 6.5–100 × 4.5–56 cm), achene shape and size (cordate-triangular, 8–15 × 8–16 mm). The distribution, notes on ecology, and conservation status of the new species are also provided.

A new perennial species, Silene nemrutensis (Silene sect. Spergulifoliae, Caryophyllaceae), is described and illustrated from SE-Anatolia. A macromorphological comparison with the similar species S. arguta is given as well as the ultrastructure of the seeds and pollen grains. Original photographs, geographical distribution, habitat and IUCN conservation status are also provided.

Gladiolus izzet-baysalii is described and illustrated as a new species from Karaman province in Southern Anatolia. Gladiolus izzet-baysalii is not morphologically close to any of the species of Gladiolus in Turkey. Although it has some similarities with G. illyricus and G. hamzaoglui in terms of habitus, G. izzet-baysalii differs significantly in tunic structure, number of leaves, inflorescence, perianth, anther, style, capsule and seed features. In this study, the diagnostic morphological features, distribution, conservation status, habitat and ecological characteristics of the new species are discussed. Micromorphological characteristics of G. izzet-baysalii, G. illyricus and G. hamzaoglui seeds are also examined and compared using stereomicroscope and SEM analyses.

Gladiolus aladagensis is described and illustrated as a new species from Bolu province in Northwestern Anatolia, Turkey. Gladiolus aladagensis is morphologically close to G. italicus and G. kotschyanus. In this study, the diagnostic morphological features, distribution, conservation status, habitat and ecological characteristics of the new species are discussed. Micromorphological characteristics of G. aladagensis, G. italicus and G. kotschyanus seeds are also examined and compared using LM and SEM analyses. In addition, a new diagnostic key is given for all species of Gladiolus in Turkey.

Stachys hakkariensis, a new species of S. sect. Olisia, is described and illustrated from eastern Anatolia, Turkey. From the morphological point of view, S. hakkariensis appears to be similar  to S. sparsipilosa, but it differs in several morphological features regarding the stem, leaves, flower and fruit. Geographical distribution, habitat and IUCN conservation status of this species are provided.

Lactuca anatolica is described as a new species from the province of Bingöl, and is known from only one locality. Its diagnostic characters are discussed, and taxonomic comments are presented. Lactuca anatolica is similar to L. leucoclada, L. orientalis subsp. nuristanica and L. orientalis subsp. orientalis but differs from these species in achenes, indumentum and leaves. Its achenes were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data on ecology and IUCN conservation status of the new species are also presented. A distribution map of the new and related species is provided.
