Two new species of Begonia (sect. Platycentrum, Begoniaceae) from the Central Highlands of Vietnam: B. villosula and B. lophura

Two new species of Begonia L., namely Begonia villosula T.S.Hoang & C.W.Lin and B. lophura T.S.Hoang & C.W.Lin, from the Central Highlands of Vietnam, are described and illustrated. They are assigned to Begonia sect. Platycentrum based on several characters including axillary inflorescence, 4-tepaled staminate flower and 5-tepaled pistillate flower with bilocular ovary, each with two placentae. Begonia villosula resembles B. thomsonii, but it is different in its leaf margins crenate to crenulate (vs. irregularly serrulate), stamens 80–120 (vs. 35–70), pistillate flower 4-tepaled (vs. 5-tepaled) and ovary hirsute (vs. villous). Begonia lophura is somewhat similar to B. pavonina, but it is different in having widely ovate (vs. ovate) and abaxially red hirsute (vs. glabrous) leaves, bracts persistent (vs. caducous), tepals hirsute (vs. glabrous) in both of staminate and pistillate flowers, capsule scabrous (vs. glabrous) and abaxial wing strongly swollen (vs. thin, not swollen). The conservation status of the two new species are assessed as Vulnerable according to the IUCN Red List criteria.

The new species Chiococcagrandiflora Lorence & T.Van Devender from Sinaloa and Sonora, Mexico differs from its congeners by its larger, showy white flowers in compact cymes of 3–9, and infundibuliform corollas 16–20 mm long with tubes 13–17 mm long and lobes 3–3.5 mm long. Its distribution, habitat, and relationships are outlined. The conservation status for this species is estimated to be Endangered (EN) based on IUCN Red List Criteria.

Two species of Monstera, apparently endemic to Costa Rica, are newly described and illustrated. Monstera juliusii occurs in the southern Costa Rican portion of the Cordillera de Talamanca at 1600–2250 m, and has been confused with M. standleyana in herbaria. Monstera monteverdensis occurs in the Guanacaste and Tilarán cordilleras, and the northwestern part of the Cordillera Central, at 500–2300 m, and has been confused with M. epipremnoides, M. lentii and M. lechleriana in herbaria. Phenology and suggested conservation categories according to the IUCN Red List criteria are indicated for both new taxa.

Isoetes dubsiisp. nov. and I. santacruzensissp. nov., two new species from lowland areas in South America, are described, illustrated and compared to similar species. Isoetes dubsii can be distinguished from other species of the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands by a set of characters including leaves that are long, flexuous and trigonal in transverse section, tri-lobate stems, rudimentary velum, pustulate megaspores of 310‒390 µm diameter and laesurae of the megaspore at least four times wider than high. Isoetes santacruzensis has flexuous, filiform leaves, 0.4–0.8 mm wide at mid length and reaching up to 15 cm long, black or reddish-black sporangia, sclerified phyllopodia and sparsely verrucate megaspores of 320‒390 µm in diameter. We also include a key for species from the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands and Bolivia and spore images for all species that are discussed. Isoetes dubsii and I. santacruzensis are only known from their type localities and they may deserve special attention concerning their conservation status. However, based on our current knowledge on these species and according to IUCN Red List criteria, they are assessed here as data deficient (DD).

Atelopus pachydermus is redescribed on the basis of the retraced holotype and recently collected specimens. Comparisons with the holotype confirmed that this species occurs neither in Pacific Colombia, nor in the northeastern Cordillera of Ecuador, as proposed by previous authors. It occurs in the northwestern Andes of Peru and adjacent Ecuador. Populations from the Cordillera Oriental in northern Ecuador (some of them previously allocated to A. pachydermus) are described as a new species, which is distinguished from other Atelopus by size, coloration, and by having white digital pads that contrast with adjacent black phalanges. In addition, a population of Atelopus from the Andes of southwestern Ecuador, previously included in the Atelopus bomolochos complex, and having an aqua blue iris is described as a new species. We include osteological data of both new species. Predictions of numbers of species of Atelopus to be discovered and described, as well as of numbers for Ecuadorian amphibian diversity, indicates that these faunas are yet largely undescribed. Because recent records of A. pachydermus and the two new species are lacking despite search efforts, we assume that they are possibly extinct, similar to many other Andean Atelopus. Thus, we categorize these species either aspossibly extinct or, applying IUCN Red List criteria, as Critically Endangered. Current evidence suggests that amphibian extinctions in the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes have been more drastic than previously recognized.

Dianthus koreanus sp. nov., from Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea, is described and illustrated. It is a chasmophyte growing on the rocks on the seashore in the eastern coast of Korea. The new species is similar to D. chinensis by its vegetative and floral morphology. Differential characters refer to the leaves (oblanceolate to oblong and greenish-gray coriaceous), and the bracts (3 pairs, each bract being elliptic to obovate with apex acute). The conservation status of D. koreanus was assessed according to the IUCN Red List criteria.

During our studies on Eugenia of Espírito Santo state, Brazil, two new species came out of our attention being here described, illustrated and compared morphologically with their similar species. Eugenia mestrealvarensis can be easily recognised by its clusters of fascicules on trunk with pedicellate flowers, an unusual feature among the species of the genus, and E. penduliflora by its two-flowered raceme with later vegetative proliferation with pendular pedicels. Both species are evaluated as critically endangered following IUCN red list criteria, being E. mestrealvarensis restricted to the Área de Proteção Ambiental Estadual de Mestre Álvaro, and E. penduliflora to the Reserva Natural Vale, in Espírito Santo state.

The limestone areas in south China are a major biodiversity hotspot for terrestrial biomes. Hemiboea, with 34 species and 5 varieties, mainly distributed in south China, is one of the characteristic plant groups in limestone areas. Hemiboeasuiyangensis, a new species of Gesneriaceae from limestone areas in Guizhou, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is easily distinguished from other Hemiboea species by having an oblique-infundibular corolla with an abaxially gibbous swelling on the upper half of the tube and with a densely villose throat and lower lobes. Hemiboeasuiyangensis is similar to H.omeiensis W. T. Wang in the shape of the leaf blade, but differs from the latter by the shape of the petiole, involucre, calyx and corolla and the colour of the corolla. The conservation status of this species is considered to be “Critically Endangered” (CR) according to IUCN Red List Criteria.

Alseodaphnopsis maguanensis and A. putaoensis, two new species of Alseodaphnopsis (Lauraceae) from southwestern China (Yunnan Province) and northern Myanmar (Kachin State), are here described and illustrated based on both morphological and molecular evidence. They are morphologically similar to Alseodaphnopsis rugosa and phylogenetically closely related to A. rugosa and A. hainanensis respectively. Their preliminary conservation status is also estimated according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Sedum ichangensissp. nov., from Yichang, Hubei province, central China, is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to S. elatinoides and S. rosthornianum in its leaf and carpel morphology and differs in its creeping stems and solitary flowers. The conservation status of S. ichangensis was assessed as Endangered according to the IUCN Red List criteria.

Aristolochia pseudoutriformis X.X.Zhu & J.S.Ma, sp. nov. and A. yangii X.X.Zhu & J.S.Ma, sp. nov., two new species from Yunnan, China, are described and illustrated here. The former is morphologically similar to A. utriformis and A. forrestiana and the latter is similar to A. cucurbitoides and A. forrestiana. According to Ma’s (1989a) classification, both new species belong to Aristolochia subgenus Siphisia on the basis of the 3-lobed gynostemium and oblong anthers that are adnate in pairs, opposite the gynostemium lobes. Meanwhile, the two new species are assessed as Vulnerable (VU D2) according to IUCN Red List criteria.
