A neotype is designated for Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) pictipennis (Philippi) and morphological redescriptions are provided for the adult male, male genitalia, fourth-instar larva and pupa. All specimens, including the neotype were collected in Río Mapocho, Santiago, Chile in 1945 / 1946, and were deposited in the Entomological Collection of Faculdade de Saúde Pública, Universidade de São Paulo (FSP-USP), Brazil. The neotype was previously invalidly designated the allotype of An. pictipennis by Lane and Neghme (1946). Illustrations are provided for diagnostic characteristics of the male genitalia, and larval stage.

A new species, Mansonia (Mansonia) iguassuensis sp. nov., is described and defined based on morphological characters of adult male and female, male genitalia, fourth-instar larvae and pupae. Descriptions were based on specimens collected in the states of Paraná and São Paulo. Female and male genitalia, fourth-instar larvae and pupae are illustrated.

Eleven species of Uranotaenia, one belonging to the subgenus Pseudoficalbia and ten to the subgenus Uranotaenia, have been recorded in Mexico. In general, two species are commonly recorded in urban areas by the vector surveillance programs, but the other species are rarely collected as they occupy habitats in non-anthropized environments, and for that reason they remain poorly known. Some of the species recorded in Mexico have not been described in the pupal stage and other developmental stages have only been partially described, making their recognition difficult. One of these species is Uranotaenia (Uranotaenia) coatzacoalcos Dyar & Knab, as a complete description of its larval chaetotaxy is not available, and the pupa has not been described. In this report, we provide a complete morphological description of the fourth-instar larva, the first description of the pupa, and a review of the female and male diagnostic characteristics useful for recognition of the species. We also provide keys in English and Spanish for the recognition of the larvae, pupae, females, and male genitalia of the species of Uranotaenia recorded in Mexico.

The adult male and female of Psorophora (Psorophora) pallescens Edwards are redescribed. The pupa and fourth-instar larva are described for the first time. The male genitalia, pupa and fourth-instar larva are illustrated. Information on distribution, bionomics and taxonomy is also included. Psorophora pallescens adults differ from the other species of the subgenus in the coloration of the scutum and abdomen. The larva can be distinguished from Psorophora ciliata based on characters of the head, thorax and abdomen.

Experiment showed that all developmental stages of Lacemophloeus minutus (Ol.) can survive exposure to a temperature of + 2°C. for a limited period which varies with the instar.The egg was more susceptible to such exposure than any other stage, followed by the first, second and third larval instars and the adult, which did not differ significantly from each other, and then by the fourth-instar larva and pupa which can also be grouped together.The adult male proved 1·21 times more susceptible than the female to the effects of exposure.Atmospheric humidity did not influence the mortality of eggs or adults. Previous starvation did not affect the mortality of adults subsequently exposed to + 2°C.

The fourth instar larva and pupa of Culicoides debilipalpis Lutz, 1913 are described, illustrated, and photomicrographed from material collected in tree-holes of Salix sp. in Entre Rios Province, Argentina by using binocular, phase-contrast, and scanning electron microscopy. Measurements of instars I–IV are also presented. The larva shows features typical to carnivorous-predatory larvae, as well as characters typical of larvae occurring in tree holes and clean water. Details on larval biology, habitat, and feeding behavior are given.

Mansonia (Mansonia) fonsecai (Pinto 1932) is considered a valid species distinct from Mansonia indubitans Dyar & Shannon 1925. Morphological characters to distinguish Ma. fonsecai from Ma. indubitans are included. The adult female, male, genitalia, pupa, and fourth-instar larva of Ma. fonsecai are described and illustrated.
