The oribatid mite genus Oribatella (Oribatellidae) includes 18 species known previously from North America. Herein, wedescribe 11 new Oribatella species from montane, subarctic, forest and prairie habitats in western North America: O. abmisp. nov., O. banksi sp. nov., O. ewingi sp. nov., O. heatherae sp. nov., O. manningensis sp. nov., O. maryae sp. nov., O.oregonensis sp. nov., O. parallelus sp. nov., O. pawnee sp. nov., O. sintranslamella and O. yukonensis sp. nov.Descriptions of two species (O. heatherae and O. pawnee) include some developmental instars. That of O. yukonensisincludes all instars; nymphs retain dorsocentral setae dm and dp, but the setal morphology changes between larva andnymphs. These immatures bear sclerotized areas on the hysterosoma. Adults of Oribatella oregonensis show distinctsexual dimorphism, with three notogastral setae arising from fused porose areas in the male. We provide new distributionrecords for Oribatella species previously known from North America, including O. arctica Thor, 1930, O. canadensisBehan-Pelletier and Eamer, 2010, O. jacoti Behan-Pelletier, 2011 and O. reticulatoides Hammer, 1955, and remark on O.anomola Grabowski, 1970. We clarify description of the octotaxic system and the interlamellar region in species ofOribatella and discuss variability in hysterosomal sclerotization and setation in immatures. Finally, we give a key to adults of the 29 species of Oribatella now known from North America.

AbstractThe oribatid mite genus Ametroproctus, soil and litter inhabitants in the desert, alpine, and montane regions of western North America, is discussed. Two subgenera are recognized, Ametroproctus s. str. and Coropoculia. Their respective type-species, A. oresbios Higgins and Woolley and C. reticulata Aoki and Fujikawa, are redescribed, and newly discovered immatures of both species are described. Four new species are proposed, A. (Ametroproctus) tuberculosus, A. (A.) aridus, A. (Coropoculia) beringianus, and A. (C.) canningsi. A new generic diagnosis is given, as well as a key to subgenera and species known from North America.

Four new species of the oribatid mite genus Carabodes from western North America are described, based on adult specimens: Carabodes california known from California, C. colorado from British Columbia, Alberta, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico, C. dickinsoni from British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California, and C. hoh from British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California. We provide an expanded diagnosis of the genus, including information on integumental birefringence, chaetotaxy, palptarsal setation, and position of lyrifissure iad. We present a table of character states and a diagnostic key for the 28 species, as well as a summary of their distributions.

The oribatid mite genus Oribatella (Oribatellidae) includes 107 species worldwide, with 13 species reported for eastern North America. Herein, I describe six new Oribatella species from eastern North America: O. flagellata sp. nov., O. jacoti sp. nov., O. nortoni sp. nov., O. metzi sp. nov., O. texana sp. nov., and O. transtriata sp. nov. Oribatella metzi and O. nortoni are described on the basis of adults and immatures. The deutonymph and tritonymph of O. metzi lack dorsocentral setae dm and dp, and the diagnosis of the genus is expanded to accommodate these newly described immatures, and also newly described adult characters. I provide expanded, detailed diagnoses for previously described species of eastern North America: Oribatella arctica Thor, 1930, O. brevicornuta Jacot, 1934, O. dentaticuspis Ewing, 1910, O. gigantea Berlese, 1916, O. mediocris Berlese, 1916, O. minuta Banks, 1896, O. plummeri Jacot, 1934, O. pusilla Berlese, 1916, O. quadridentata Banks, 1895, O. reticulata Berlese, 1916, O. reticulatoides Hammer, 1955 and provide new distribution records where available. I question the specific status of O. extensa Jacot, 1934, and consider records of O. sexdentata Berlese, 1916 from eastern North America to be doubtful. Oribatella quadricornuta (Michael, 1880) is confirmed to occur in eastern Canada. Finally, I give a key to adults of the 18 species of Oribatella now known from eastern North America.

AbstractMorphology, distribution, and habitat data are presented for three species of the oribatid mite genus Gymnodampia Jacot occurring in North America. A revised generic diagnosis is given and the type species Gymnodampia setata (Berlese) is redescribed based on topotypic material from Missouri. Immatures of G. setata are described and aspects of their biology are presented. Two new species from North America, G. jacotisp. nov. and G. lindquistisp. nov., are proposed and described on the basis of adults, and a key is given for North American species of Gymnodampia. The ameroid genera Cristamerus Hammer, from Pakistan and China, and Defectamerus Aoki, from Japan, Korea, and China, are considered junior synonyms of Gymnodampia, and G. conformis (Fujikawa) is considered a junior synonym of G. fusca (Fujikawa). Immatures of G. setata are apheredermous, but with a circular line of dehiscence, whereas known immatures of the superfamily Ameroidea are eupheredermous. Nonetheless, without convincing apomorphic traits linking Gymnodampia to any known apheredermous family of Brachypylina, we hypothesize that Gymnodampia has lost the eupheredermy characteristic of Ameroidea, and we place it in the family Ameridae on the basis of adult similarities.

AbstractThe oribatid mite genus Megeremaeus is redefined, with the addition of information on leg chaetotaxy and immature instars. Three new species are described, Megeremaeus hylaius from northeastern North America, and M. keewatin and M. kootenai from northwestern North America. Descriptions of the former two species are based on adults and immatures, the latter species on adults only. Nymphs of M. montanus Higgins and Woolley are described. A key is given for the six known species in the genus.

AbstractRepresentatives of the oribatid mite family Ceratozetidae of subarctic western North America, including 14 species in eight genera, are treated. A new genus Laminizetes, and eight new species, Diapterobates siccatus, Trichoribates ogilviensis, Laminizetes fortispinosus, Ceratozetes inupiaq, C. kutchin, C. fjellbergi, Sphaerozetes firthensis, and Melanozetes tanana, are proposed, and Dentizetes rudentiger Hammer, Diapterobates humeralis (Hermann), Neogymnobates luteus (Hammer), Trichoribates striatus Hammer, Sphaerozetes castaneus Hammer, and Melanozetes meridianus Sellnick are redescribed. Immatures of Dentizetes rudentiger and Sphaerozetes firthensis are described. A key to the adults of the 31 species of Ceratozetidae recorded from the western North American arctic and subarctic is given. Relationships among the 12 genera in the Ceratozetidae recorded from the North American arctic and subarctic are discussed.

AbstractThe oribatid mite genus Zachvatkinibates, found in both littoral and forest litter habitats in North America and the Soviet Union, is redefined. Its systematic relationship to other genera in the Mycobatidae is discussed. A new species, Z. tetrasklerosis, is proposed, and Z. maritimus Shaldybina, 1973, is redescribed. Immatures of both species are described; none was previously known for the genus. Sexual dimorphism is displayed in the notogastral porose areas of adults of Z. maritimus, but not of Z. tetrasklerosis.

The aquatic oribatid mite genus Mucronothrus (Trhypochthoniidae) is redescribed on the basis of characters of adults and immatures and its familial placement is reviewed. It is represented in North America by two species. Mucronothrus nasalis, a globally widespread species, is redescribed on the basis of all active instars. In Canada it is now known from Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia and in the U.S.A. from Oregon and Colorado. Ancillary new distribution records include England and Cape Horn. Misinterpretations of homologies of leg setae in the literature are corrected. A population near Toronto, Ontario, was examined for variation in genital and leg setation; this conforms well with previously described geographic patterns (J. Travé). This population exhibits previously unknown variation in cheliceral form. A second species, Mucronothrus willmanni n.sp., is proposed on the basis of adults and tritonymphs. Current records are from California, Oregon, and Montana, where it inhabits riffles in streams. Only females are known and, like M. nasalis, the species appears to be thelytokous.

AbstractThe oribatid mite family Mycobatidae is represented in America north of Mexico by the eight genera, Cyrtozetes Behan-Pelletier, Ceresella Pavlitshenko, Guatemalozetes Mahunka, Minunthozetes Hull, Mycobates Hull, Pelopsis Hall, Punctoribates Berlese, and Zachvatkinibates Shaldybina. Species occur in forests, grasslands, and arctic soils, in canopy habitats, and in the marine and freshwater littoral zone. Three new mycobatid species from North America are described: Ceresella reevesisp. nov. from forest habitats of western North America, Cyrtozetes lindoaesp. nov. from canopy habitats of western Canada, and Punctoribates weigmannisp. nov. from forest litter in eastern North America. The descriptions of Pelopsis bifurcatus (Ewing) and Punctoribates punctum (C.L. Koch) are expanded based on specimens from North America. Punctoribates palustris (Banks) is redescribed based on specimens from throughout North America. Punctoribates armipes (Banks) is considered a junior subjective synonym of P. palustris (Banks). New distribution records are given for Guatemalozetes danos Behan-Pelletier and Ryabinin and Minunthozetes semirufus (Koch). Diagnoses are given for each genus discussed, and keys are provided to the eight genera of Mycobatidae of North America and to species of Cyrtozetes and Punctoribates, genera not recently revised.
