Four bacterial strains (LJ126T/S18 and Z-34T/S20) recovered from faecal samples of Tibetan antelopes on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau of China were analysed using a polyphasic approach. All four isolates were aerobic, short rod-shaped, non-motile, Gram-stain-positive, acid-fast and fast-growing. Phylogenetic analyses based upon 16S rRNA and whole-genome sequences showed that the two pair of strains formed two distinct branches within the evolutionary radiation of the genus Mycolicibacterium . Strains LJ126T/S18 and Z-34T/S20 were most closely related to Mycolicibacterium austroafricanum CCUG 37667T, Mycobacterium aurum NCTC 10437T, Mycobacterium pyrenivorans DSM 44605T, Mycobacterium monacense JCM 15658T, Mycolicibacterium sarraceniae JCM 30395T, Mycolicibacterium tokaiense JCM 6373T and Mycobacterium murale JCM 13392T, but readily distinguished from the known species by a combination of chemotaxonomic and phenotypic features and by low average nucleotide identity values (74.4–84.9 %). Consequently, the two strain pairs are considered to represent different novel species of Mycolicibacterium for which the names Mycolicibacterium baixiangningiae sp. nov. and Mycolicibacterium mengxianglii sp. nov. are proposed, with LJ126T (=CGMCC 1.1992T=KCTC 49535T) and Z-34T (=CGMCC 1.1993T=DSM 106172T) as the respective type strains.

Modification of kraft lignin (KL), traditionally uses harsh and energy-demanding physical and chemical processes. In this study, the potential of the bacterial laccase CotA (spore coating protein A) for oxidation of KL under mild conditions was assessed. Thereby, the efficiency of CotA to oxidize both softwood and hardwood KL of varying purity at alkaline conditions was examined. For the respective type of wood, the highest oxidation activity by CotA was determined for the medium ash content softwood KL (MA_S) and the medium ash content hardwood KL (MA_H), respectively. By an up to 95% decrease in fluorescence and up to 65% in phenol content coupling of the structural lignin units was indicated. These results correlated with an increase in viscosity and molecular weight, which increased nearly 2 and 20-fold for MA_H and about 1.3 and 6.0-fold for MA_S, respectively. Thus, this study confirms that the CotA laccase can oxidize a variety of KL at alkaline conditions, while the origin and purity of KL were found to have a major impact on the efficiency of oxidation. Under the herein tested conditions, it was observed that the MA_H KL showed the highest susceptibility to CotA oxidation when compared to the other hardwood KLs and the softwood KLs. Therefore, this could be a viable method to produce sustainable resins and adhesives.

Afforestation is a popular practice of the recovery of landscape affected by open-cast coal mining. We investigated what impact the observable characteristics of restored forests have on their attractiveness for recreation framed as a one hour walk in a respective type of forest. In this study, we elaborate on some of the observable characteristics which have been previously found in the literature to affect the perceived attractiveness of outdoor environments. Environmental preference data were collected online using a quasi-representative sample of affected and control populations of the Czech Republic (N = 869). The questionnaire employed visual representations of typical reclaimed forest sites on spoil heaps in the Sokolov mining district. A mediation analysis revealed that forests growing in post-mining areas are perceived more negatively than the typical commercial spruce forest due to their lower permeability, lower level of stewardship, and perceived low safety. However, there are differences in observed characteristics also between different types of restored forests, even when controlling the effect of forest age. The results show for forestry practice that while some of the observed characteristics change by themselves with the increasing age of the forest (permeability, perceived safety, and naturalness of successional forests), improvement in others requires targeted after-care (perceived stewardship). In any case, our results are promising in that they imply that the recreational value of restored forests in post-mining areas may further increase in the future.

Abstract Ten species of the louse genus Myrsidea belonging to the “serini-species-group” have been reviewed. A redescription of Myrsidea quadrifasciata (Piaget, 1880), the earliest described and valid species of this species complex, is given and a neotype for this species is designated. Nine new junior synonymies of M. quadrifasciata are proposed and discussed. The new synonyms and their respective type hosts are: Myrsidea anoxanthi Price and Dalgleish, 2007 from Loxipasser anoxanthus (Gosse, 1847), Myrsidea argentina (Kellogg, 1906) from Spinus magellanicus (Vieillot, 1805), Myrsidea balati Macháček, 1977 from Passer montanus (Linnaeus, 1758), Myrsidea darwini Palma and Price, 2010 from Geospiza fuliginosa Gould, 1837, Myrsidea major (Piaget, 1880) from Plectrophenax nivalis (Linnaeus, 1758), Myrsidea serini (Séguy, 1944) from Serinus serinus (Linnaeus, 1766), Myrsidea queleae Tendeiro, 1964 from Quelea quelea lathami (Smith, A., 1836), Myrsidea textoris Klockenhoff, 1984 from Ploceus cucullatus cucullatus (Müller, 1776), and Myrsidea viduae Tendeiro, 1993 from Vidua macroura (Pallas, 1764). Intraspecific morphometric variability, relative genetic divergence (based on a 379 bp portion of the mitochondrial COI gene and a 347 bp portion of the nuclear EF-1α gene), geographical distribution, and host associations, including 8 new host records for these lice, are discussed. Taking into consideration these parameters we suggest that the only way to deal with these taxa is to follow concept of subspecies with the following taxa and their geographic distributon: Palearctic Region: M. q. quadrifasciata and M. q. serini, Neotropical Region: M. q. anoxanthi, M. q. argentina, M. q. darwini, Paleotropic Region: M. q. queleae, M. q. textoris and M. q. viduae.

The paper examines the creative segment of digital art, which has been carried out by professional graphic artists in the independent Republic of Moldova, including finished artworks produced in big and small print runs, and also unique graphic works. Sketches and technical drawings of any kind are excluded from the study. Important data is provided about different images (chiesel works, book illustrations, caricatures, postage stamps, ex-librises), which were rendered digitally both in full and in part. Also, concise information is offered on the professionals practicing the respective type of digital art over the years. There is also contoured the process of nationwide spread of the digital images and the specifity of the digital creative tool. The author also examines the professional attitude towards digital art in the Republic of Moldova in terms of the relationship between mass production, traditional handmade art and digital execution technique. The reasons and conditions for the dissemination of digital images in national art are specified. The dynamics of opinions on the role of the computer in the creation and modification of graphic works at different stages of the evolution of digital and traditional technology in the Republic of Moldova is traced.

Abstract Purpose The detection and segmentation of surgical instruments has been a vital step for many applications in minimally invasive surgical robotics. Previously, the problem was tackled from a semantic segmentation perspective, yet these methods fail to provide good segmentation maps of instrument types and do not contain any information on the instance affiliation of each pixel. We propose to overcome this limitation by using a novel instance segmentation method which first masks instruments and then classifies them into their respective type. Methods We introduce a novel method for instance segmentation where a pixel-wise mask of each instance is found prior to classification. An encoder–decoder network is used to extract instrument instances, which are then separately classified using the features of the previous stages. Furthermore, we present a method to incorporate instrument priors from surgical robots. Results Experiments are performed on the robotic instrument segmentation dataset of the 2017 endoscopic vision challenge. We perform a fourfold cross-validation and show an improvement of over 18% to the previous state-of-the-art. Furthermore, we perform an ablation study which highlights the importance of certain design choices and observe an increase of 10% over semantic segmentation methods. Conclusions We have presented a novel instance segmentation method for surgical instruments which outperforms previous semantic segmentation-based methods. Our method further provides a more informative output of instance level information, while retaining a precise segmentation mask. Finally, we have shown that robotic instrument priors can be used to further increase the performance.

A detailed evaluation of eight bacterial isolates from floral nectar and animal visitors to flowers shows evidence that they represent three novel species in the genus Acinetobacter . Phylogenomic analysis shows the closest relatives of these new isolates are Acinetobacter apis , Acinetobacter boissieri and Acinetobacter nectaris , previously described species associated with floral nectar and bees, but high genome-wide sequence divergence defines these isolates as novel species. Pairwise comparisons of the average nucleotide identity of the new isolates compared to known species is extremely low (<83 %), thus confirming that these samples are representative of three novel Acinetobacter species, for which the names Acinetobacter pollinis sp. nov., Acinetobacter baretiae sp. nov. and Acinetobacter rathckeae sp. nov. are proposed. The respective type strains are SCC477T (=TSD-214T=LMG 31655T), B10AT (=TSD-213T=LMG 31702T) and EC24T (=TSD-215T=LMG 31703T=DSM 111781T).

As part of a study investigating the spoilage microbiome of modified-atmosphere packaged beef from Germany, four novel strains of lactic acid bacteria were isolated and subsequently taxonomically characterized by a polyphasic approach, which revealed that they could not be assigned to known species. The isolates were Gram-staining-positive, coccoid, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, catalase-negative and oxidase-negative. Morphological, physiological and phylogenetic analysis revealed a distinct lineage within the genus Lactococcus , with Lactococcus piscium and Lactococcus plantarum as closest relatives. Results indicated that they represented two different novel species with two strains, (TMW 2.1612T/TMW 2.1613 and TMW 2.1615T/TMW 2.1614), respectively. The two strains of both novel species shared identical 16S rRNA gene sequences but a MLSA allowed their intraspecies differentiation. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of TMW 2.1612T and TMW 2.1615T had a similarity of 99.85 % to each other and a similarity of 99.85 and 99.78 % the most closely related type strain of Lactococcus piscium , respectively. However, the ANIb value between the respective type strains TMW 2.1612T and TMW 2.1615T, and the type strain of Lactococcus piscium was only 94.3 and 92.0 %, respectively, and 92.9 % between TMW 2.1612T and TMW 2.1615T. The in silico DDH estimate value between the respective type strain TMW 2.1612T and TMW 2.1615T and the most closely related type strain of Lactococcus piscium was only 59.9 and 48.9 %, respectively, and 51.1 % between TMW 2.1612T and TMW 2.1615T. Peptidoglycan type of strain TMW 2.1612T is Lys–Thr–Ala and major fatty acids are summed feature 8 and C16 : 0. Peptidoglycan type of strain TMW 2.1615T is Lys–Ala and major fatty acids are C16 : 0, C19 : 0cyclo ω8c and summed feature 8. On the basis of polyphasic evidence, the meat isolates represent two novel species of the genus Lactococcus , for which the names Lactococcus carnosus sp. nov and Lactococcus paracarnosus sp. nov are proposed. The designated respective type strains are TMW 2.1612T (=DSM 111016T =CECT 30115T) and TWM 2.1615T (=DSM 111017T =CECT 30116T).

Previous research suggests that the origins of perfectionism lie in parental factors. The present study examined how parenting style and family perfectionism is associated with the manifestation of perfectionism in a sample of 855 Greek university students, using the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (APS-R), the Family Almost Perfect Scale (FAPS) and the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ). The subscales of APS-R and FAPS are combined to provide three types of personal and family perfectionism respectively (adaptive, maladaptive, absence of perfectionism), whereas PAQ distinguishes three parenting styles (authoritarian, permissive, authoritative). The authoritative parenting style was positively associated with adaptive perfectionism in both genders and negatively associated with maladaptive perfectionism among women, the authoritarian parenting style was positively associated with maladaptive perfectionism among men, whereas the permissive parenting style was positively associated with maladaptive perfectionism among women and the absence of perfectionism among men. Moreover, the type of personal perfectionism was associated to the respective type of family perfectionism.


Forest fires constitute one of the greatest risks for certain ecosystems services. Hence, the location planning of firefighting units based on forest fire hazard is a key point for the immediate containment of fire incidents before they become uncontrollable. The primary aim of the paper is the estimation and finding of the required number and positions (i.e. the exact geographical locations and the respective type of installation – fire hydrant etc.) of fire fleet to fully cover (in terms of travel time) the districts of fire services in Chalkidiki (Greece), taking into account the scalable fire susceptibility. The proposed location plans revealed the fact that most of the regions may adequately respond to the fire vulnerability with the current forces, whereas a few regions clearly need a reinforcement in order to sufficiently cover their territories. A future perspective may be related with the exploration of best locations through the entire study area, merging the current administrative boundaries. One more asset of the project constitutes the flexibility and applicability of the sub-modules to other geographic regions after the necessary adjustments to local conditions.
