On the status of Araripegryllus romualdoi (Insecta: Orthoptera: Grylloidea) from the Cretaceous Santana Formation of Brazil

The fossil cricket Araripegryllus romualdoi was described by Freitas et al. (2016) based on a single, very poorly preserved specimen from the Romualdo Member of the Lower Cretaceous Santana Formation; a deposit famed for the exceptional preservation of vertebrates in carbonate concretions (Martill, 1996, 2007). While abundant and diverse in the underlying Crato Formation (Martill et al., 2007 and contributions therein), fossil insects had not been reported from the Santana Formation prior to Freitas et al.’s paper. The occurrence of an insect in the Santana Formation is certainly noteworthy, but the description of a new species and its placement in the genus Araripegryllus are problematic, primarily because of the very poor preservation of the specimen. Here, problems associated with the diagnosis and placement of A. romualdoi are outlined, and the species declared a nomen dubium.

The status of the genus Phelene stat. resurr., previously synonymized under Chiriquia is revalidated. The genus is redescribed and Phelene turgida stat. rev. a lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for this species. Tetrix laticeps is proposed as nomen dubium and its described a new additional species Phelene maroon n. sp. The diagnosis of the subfamily is adjusted with the characters of the new taxa included and an updated key of genera and species is provided.

Archisargidae, an extinct family of the suborder Brachycera, are traditionally attributed to the infraorder Stratiomyomorpha (Oberprieler & Yeates, 2012). The type genus, Archisargus Rohdendorf, 1938, is a small group including only four species from two well-known localities, the Karatau Formation of Kazakhstan and the Jiulongshan Formation of China. Rohdendorf (1938) erected the genus based on the species Archisargus pulcher from the Karatau Formation of Kazakhstan, and assigned it to Stratiomyidae. Hennig (1954) questioned Rohdendorf’s assignment and pointed out that the characters of the Stratiomyidae were absent, but he didn’t propose an appropriate placement for this genus. Rohdendorf (1962) reconsidered the systematic position of the genus and established the new family Archisargidae based on the genus. In fact, the description of the Archisargus was not informative due to the incomplete preservation of the type specimen (only Sc and R were mentioned) (Rohdendorf, 1938). Mostovski (1997) re-described the type specimen of Archisargus pulcher, clarified the status of the genus, and described a second species, Archisargus maximus, which was also from Karatau, Kazakhstan. A decade later, Zhang et al. (2007) described two older species from the Middle Jurassic of Daohugou, China. The Daohugou locality is well-known for its diverse fossil insects, representing an important diversification center of insects during the Mesozoic Era (Ren et al., 2009; Wang et al., 2010, 2012; Gao et al., 2012; Gu et al., 2012; Meng et al., 2017; Ren et al., 2019). Herein, we describe a new species, Archisargus aequinervus sp. nov., from this locality. Additionally, a key to species of the genus is provided.

A new species of whitefly, Aleurocanthus arecae sp. nov., collected from arecanut (Areca catechu) in Karnataka state in India, is described and illustrated. The status of Aleurodes nubilans Buckton is discussed and considered a nomen dubium.

A new species and eight new subspecies of Papilionoidea discovered in Vietnam between 2002 and 2020 are described and illustrated. The status of two taxa are revised. New taxa include Pieridae: Delias sanaca bidoupa Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov. and Talbotia naganum aurelia Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov.; Nymphalidae: Abrota ganga pulcheria Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Bassarona recta consonensis Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Pantoporia bieti aurantina Monastyrskii & To subspec. nov.; Ragadia latifasciata cristata Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Ragadia latifasciata crystallina Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Faunis indistincta luctus Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov. & Aemona gialaica Monastyrskii, K. Saito & Vu, spec. nov. The taxon infuscata Devyatkin & Monastyrskii, previously described as the subspecies Aemona tonkinensis infuscata, was elevated to the species level, while the taxon critias (Ragadia critias Riley & Godfrey) was reduced to a subspecies. Three Satyrinae species were recorded from Vietnam for the first time: Palaeonympha opalina Butler, 1871; Ypthima motschulskyi Bremer & Grey, 1853; and Ragadia latifasciata Leech, 1891.

A new species, Pseudodactylaria brevis, is described, illustrated and compared with other Pseudodactylaria and Dactylaria-like taxa. Evidence for the new species is provided by morphological comparison and sequence data analyses. Pseudodactylaria brevis can be distinguished from other Pseudodactylaria and Dactylaria-like species by its short hyaline conidiophores and fusiform, 1-septate hyaline conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of LSU and ITS sequence data was carried out to determine the phylogenetic placement of the species and confirm the taxonomic status of Pseudodactylariaceae.
