A molecular phylogeny of the genus Psittacula sensu lato (Aves: Psittaciformes: Psittacidae: Psittacula, Psittinus, Tanygnathus, †Mascarinus) with taxonomic implications

The long-tailed parakeets of the genus Psittacula Cuvier, 1800 have thus far been regarded as a homogeneous and monophyletic group of parrots. We used nucleotide sequences of two genetic markers (mitochondrial CYTB, nuclear RAG-1) to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of Psittacula and closely related species. We found that the Asian genus Psittacula is apparently paraphyletic because two genera of short-tailed parrots, Psittinus Blyth, 1842 and Tanygnathus Wagler, 1832, cluster within Psittacula, as does †Mascarinus Lesson, 1830. To create monophyletic genera, we propose recognition of the following genera: Himalayapsitta Braun, 2016 for P. himalayana, P. finschii, P. roseata, and P. cyanocephala; Nicopsitta Braun, 2016 for P. columboides and P. calthrapae; Belocercus S. Müller, 1847 for P. longicauda; Psittacula Cuvier, 1800 for P. alexandri and P. derbiana; Palaeornis Vigors, 1825 for †P. wardi and P. eupatria; and Alexandrinus Braun, 2016 for P. krameri, †P. exsul, and P. (eques) echo. Additionally, Psittacula krameri and P. alexandri are paraphyletic species, which should be split to form monophyletic species.

Kites of the Elaninae group are small and medium-sized, mostly tropical raptors traditionally considered as an early diverged subfamily of the Accipitridae. We used nucleotide sequences of three genetic markers (mitochondrial Cyt b and COI, nuclear RAG-1) to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of the Elaninae, other kites, and representatives of different families of diurnal raptors. Our results confirm the basal position of Elaninae, separated the latest in Early Miocene, including Chelictinia riocourii, which was not sequenced before and belongs to this group. Not only DNA data but also cytological, morphological, and ecological data show the singularity of Elaninae. We suggest elevating this group to family level as Elanidae within the order Accipitriformes. It includes Gampsonyx swainsonii as a monotypic subfamily because of distinctive traits and DNA sequence data. Taxonomic implications for other macrogroups of Accipitriformes are discussed.

Recent studies have successfully extended the repertoire of microsatellite analysis beyond population genetics and demonstrate that phylogenetic relationships of closely related species can be inferred accurately with fewer loci than previously assumed.

SummaryThe extent of accumulation of mouse Y chromosomal repetitive sequences generally correlates with the known phylogenetic relationships in the genus Mus. However, we describe here a M. musculus Y chromosomal repetitive sequence, designated as ACClfl, whose accumulation patterns among eight Mus species do not correspond to their phylogenetic relationships. Although male-specific hybridization bands were present in all the species examined, significant accumulation (> 200 copies) in the Y chromosomes was found in M. minutoides (subgenus Nannomys), M. pahari (subgenus Coelomys) and M. saxicola (subgenus Pyromys) as well as in the three closely related species M. hortulanus, M. musculus and M. spretus that belong to the subgenus Mus. Unexpectedly, the Y chromosomes of M. caroli and M. cookii (both subgenus Mus) had considerably reduced amounts of ACClfl-related sequences. Furthermore, in rats (Rattus norvegicus) the major accumulation sites appear to be autosomal. These observations suggest that caution must be taken in the interpretation of data obtained with repetitive sequences that have evolved quickly.

The species of Orientopsaltria with unicolorous opercula and three related species of Platylomia are transferred to the genus Dundubia and allocated in the ‘Dundubia jacoona assemblage’ pending further investigation. The assemblage comprises eleven species in total; all are found in the Indo-Malaysian Archipelago, Indo-China, and the adjoining parts of China and India. The four species which were until now placed in Orientopsaltria are D. feae (Distant, 1892), D. jacoona (Distant, 1888), D. nigripes (Moulton, 1923), and D. oopaga (Distant, 1881). The three species transferred from Platylomia are D. hainanensis (Distant, 1901), D. nagarasingna Distant, 1881, and D. spiculata Noualhier, 1896. These seven species are all redescribed. Four species are described as new: D. ayutthaya, D. laterocurvata, D. myitkyinensis and D. sinbyudaw. Seven species are synonymized: O. andersoni (Distant, 1883) with D. oopaga, D. bifasciata Liu, 1940 with D. hainanensis, O. hastata (Moulton, 1923) and D. siamensis Haupt, 1918 with D. spiculata, O. fratercula (Distant, 1912) and D. helena Distant, 1912 with D. nagarasingna, and D. longina Distant, 1917 with D. feae. Lectotypes are designated for the following species: Cosmopsaltria andersoni, C.feae, C. fratercula, C. hastata, C. nagarasingna, C. nigripes, C. oopaga, D. helena, D. longina, and D. spiculata. A key to the males is presented and the distributions of the species are discussed. The relationships of the D. jacoona assemblage with Dundubia, Platylomia, and the remaining species of Orientopsaltria are discussed. The species of the D. jacoona assemblage most likely do not form a monophyletic group on their own but rather with Dundubia s. str.

Russula subrutilans sp. nov., a new species of Russula is described from southern China. It is unique for having buff pink to light congo-pink pileus, distant ventricose to subventricose lamellae with rare lamellulae, globose to broadly ellipsoid spores with bluntly conical warts forming a partial reticulum, and narrowly clavate to clavate cheilocystidia and pleurocysitidia with variable tips. Phylogenetic relationships among the new species and other closely related species in the genus are inferred based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region.

The phylogenetic structure of bacteria is not always consistent with the traditional classification scheme based on the phenotypic properties of bacteria. That is one of the problems of modern bacterial taxonomy. In addition, traditional methods to identify bacteria using phenotypic properties have a number of disadvantages. In recent decades, significant progress was achieved in the investigation of microbial world using molecular methods for fast identification. The aim of the study was to clarify the species status of four strains of bacteria isolated from black lichens of the cliffs of Galindez Island in the Antarctic on the basis of phenotypic and genetic analysis. Methods. Morphological and cultural properties of bacteria were studied according to generally accepted microbiological methods. Physiological and biochemical ones were investigated using test systems API Coryne and API 20E (bioMerieux SA, France), according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Phylogenetic analysis was performed based on the nucleotide sequences of the 16S rRNA gene. To identify closely related species, a comparative analysis of the nucleotide sequences of 16S rRNA genes was performed using the BLAST software package. The phylogenetic position was determined by constructing trees (dendrograms) to show the position of the studied strains among closely related and typical species (programs ClustalX 2.1, Mega 6.06). The tree was constructed applying ClustalX 2.1 by comparing the nearest neighbors with bootstrap analysis (bootstrap NJ tree) using 1000 bootstrap tests (1000 alternative trees). Then the phylogenetic tree was edited by the program Mega v. 6.00. Results. Based on the results of comparative, phylogenetic and phenotypic analysis, the studied Antarctic strains 180n1, 181n2, 188n2, 190n2 were identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens, Microbacterium foliorum, Sporosarcina aquimarina and Rothia sp., respectively. The coefficient of similarity of 16S rRNA genes of strain 180n1 with such a closely related species from the database P. fluorescens NBRC 14160 was 99.5%; 181n2 with M. foliorum P 333/02 – 99.4%; 188n2 with S. aquimarina SW28 – 99.7%. These strains form common clusters with closely related species on phylogenetic dendrograms. The strain 190n2 can be considered as Rothia sp., since has the remote position from closely related strains in the cluster Rothia and a low percentage of similarity (97.3%) with the species Rothia endophytica YIM 67072. These strains belong to the phyla: Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria. Conclusions. Phylogenetic and phenotypic analyzes allowed determining the taxonomic position of isolated aerobic chemoorganotrophic microbial strains of the Antarctic. Nucleotide sequences of 16S rRNA genes are deposited in the International GenBank database under numbers HG518622, HG518623, HG518625, HG518626.

Inosperma subsphaerosporum sp. nov. is described from Hainan Province of China, based on morphological features and molecular phylogeny. The new species is characterized by a medium-sized basidioma, a scaly-fibrillose to rimulose pileus, subglobose to globose basidiospores, and thin-walled cheilocystidia. Moreover, I. subsphaerosporum is phylogenetically placed in an Old World tropical clade, in which all members described are from South Asia. Detailed descriptions, color photographs as well as comparisons between the new species and its closely related species are provided.

Panorpa Linnaeus, 1758 is the largest genus in the scorpionfly family Panorpidae. It is considered a paraphyletic taxon and needs further revisions. In this paper, we present a taxonomic study of the Panorpa guttata group, including 23 closely related species, with fourteen species new to science: Panorpa caoweii Wang, sp. n., Panorpa dali Wang, sp. n., Panorpa duanyu Wang & Gong, sp. n., Panorpa hani Wang, sp. n., Panorpa hirundo Wang, sp. n., Panorpa huangguiqiangi Wang, sp. n., Panorpa jiangrixini Wang, sp. n., Panorpa jinfoshana Wang, sp. n., Panorpa latiloba Wang, sp. n., Panorpa nanzhao Wang, sp. n., Panorpa stella Wang, sp. n., Panorpa substricta Wang, sp. n., Panorpa xiaofeng Wang & Gong, sp. n., and Panorpa xuzhu Wang & Gong, sp. n. We also provide a distributional map, keys to species, and discussions regarding the taxonomic implications and biological information of the P. guttata group.
