Two new species of burrowing crayfish in the genus Lacunicambarus (Decapoda: Cambaridae) from Alabama and Mississippi

While sampling for the Rusty Gravedigger, Lacunicambarus miltus, Taylor et al. (2011) found one or more potentially undescribed burrowing crayfish species in the genus Lacunicambarus inhabiting the area between the Pascagoula River and Mobile Bay in southern Alabama and Mississippi. Molecular analyses by Glon et al. (2018) confirmed that samples from this area were genetically distinct from other Lacunicambarus crayfishes. These findings prompted a dedicated sampling trip in January 2020. We used morphological and molecular analyses to investigate the specimens we collected and, based on our results, we describe two new crayfish species: the Lonesome Gravedigger, L. mobilensis sp. nov. and the Banded Mudbug, L. freudensteini sp. nov. Lacunicambarus mobilensis sp. nov. is sister to the Rusty Gravedigger, L. miltus, while L. freudensteini sp. nov. is sister to the Painted Devil Crayfish, L. ludovicianus. Both new species are currently known from a small number of sites in southern Alabama and Mississippi and may require conservation attention. In addition, we provide an updated key to Lacunicambarus crayfishes that includes these new species.

Guepinia alba sp. nov. and G. shanxiense sp. nov. are described and illustrated from Northern China in this paper. Morphologically, G. alba is distinguished from other Guepinia species by whitish basidiomata and 4-spored basidia while G. shanxiense is diagnosed by reddish orange basidiomata and ellipsoid to oblong ellipsoid basidiospores. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and nrLSU sequences support the establishment of the two new species.

Abstract The phylogenetic study of the deep-sea genus Bentheogennema is based on four molecular markers and 79 morphological characters. All four previously recognized species and two new species of Bentheogennema, representatives of all other genera and species groups of Benthesicymidae, and three outgroups were included in the analyses. We have examined and coded six major groups of morphological characters related to the carapace (three characters), the pleon and the telson (14), the mouthparts (nine), the armature of the pereopods (five), the thelycum (27) and the petasma (21). Results of morphological and molecular analyses were similar. Two species were transferred from Bentheogennema to other genera (for one of them a new genus was erected) and two new species of Bentheogennema were described. Three pelagic genera (Gennadas, Bentheogennema and a new genus) created a robust clade. The divergence of this clade is linked to ‘smoothening’ of the body (reduction of the branchiostegal spine on the carapace, reduction and loss of the dorsolateral spines and the end-piece on the telson) and elaboration of the copulatory structures. We provide amended diagnoses of these three pelagic genera and key to species of Bentheogennema.

Two new species of Tomentella from the Lesser Xingan Mts. of northeastern China, T. pallidocastanea and T. tenuirhizomorpha, are described and illustrated using morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analysis. T. pallidocastanea is characterized by mucedinoid basidiocarps adherent to the substrate, a light reddish brown to pinkish grey hymenophoral surface, absence of rhizomorphs and cystidia, generative hyphae with clamps, rarely with simple septa and echinulate, and subglobose to lobed basidiospores (echinuli up to 1.5 μm long). T. tenuirhizomorpha is characterized by mucedinoid basidiocarps separable from the substrate, a greyish brown to dark brown hymenophoral surface, thin rhizomorphs in the subiculum and margins, an absence of cystidia, generative hyphae with clamps rarely with simple septa and echinulate, and subglobose to globose basidiospores (echinuli up to 1.5 μm long). Molecular analyses using Maximum Likelihood, Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian Analysis confirm the phylogenetic position of the two new species. The discriminating characters of these two new species and their closely related species are discussed in this study.

Combining the results from morphological and molecular analyses, we explore the taxonomy of the genus Achalinus from Southwest China. As a result, we describe two new species, A. panzhihuaensis sp. nov. and A. yangdatongi sp. nov. from southern Sichuan and southern Yunnan provinces, respectively, and we record a new country record, A. emilyae, from Guangxi Zhuang A. R.. The mitochondrial genealogy suggests that A. panzhihuaensis sp. nov. is sister to A. meiguensis, while A. yangdatongi sp. nov. clusters with the sister species A. juliani and A. ater. Both new species show considerable genetic divergence from their recognized congeners (uncorrected p-distance > 6.2 % in COI gene). Furthermore, both new species can be diagnosed from closely related congeners by a combination of pholidosis characters. With our discovery, we provide a revised key to the 13 species from China and discuss some of the remaining issues regarding the taxonomy of the genus in China.

Two new species of Leporinus (Characiformes, Anostomidae) are described. Both new species are diagnosed by having one dark blotch on midline of anterior portion of the flank (between opercle and pelvic-fin origin) surrounded by five to seven dark blotches; and a subinferior mouth with three premaxillary teeth. Leporinus multimaculatus, new species, is distributed in small and medium-sized tributaries of the rio Tocantins and rio Xingu basins, and also in the rio Jari and coastal drainages of Amapá state, whereas L. torrenticola, new species, is endemic to the rapids of the rio Xingu and its main tributaries. The number of scale rows around the caudal peduncle is the main feature distinguishing L. multimaculatus from L. torrenticola. Comments on the diagnostic features of the newly described species are provided. In addition, the phylogenetic position and generic assignment of the new species are discussed based on available information from recent morphological and molecular analyses.

Guizhou and Yunnan Provinces (Yungui Plateau) in Southwestern China are well known as biodiversity hotspots. We introduce two new species in this study viz., Mucispora hydei (in Fuscosporellaceae, Fuscosporellales, Sordariomycetes) and Tolypocladium cucullae (Ophiocordycipitaceae, Hypocreales, Sordariomycetes) and six new records based on morpho-molecular analyses. Full descriptions, color photographs and phylogenetic trees to indicate the placements of new species are provided.

Two new species of potamid crabs, Eosamon daiaesp. nov. and Indochinamon malipoensesp. nov. are described from the Sino-Burmese border, southwestern Yunnan and from the Sino-Vietnamese border, southeastern Yunnan, China. The two new species can be distinguished from their closest congeners by several characters, among which is the form of the first gonopod structures. Molecular analyses based on partial mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequences also support the systematic status of these new taxa.

The fern flora of the Seychelles archipelago remains relatively poorly known. Current projects involving the development of the Seychelles National Herbarium and study of key biodiversity areas have resulted in extensive new explorations on the granitic islands. Historical literature, newly collected specimens and older collections have been revised for the fern family Marattiaceae as a prelude for a fern checklist, resulting in the rediscovery of Ptisana a century after it was last reported (as Marattia). Two species of Angiopteris are recognised in the Seychelles, one of them new to science. In total, three species are recorded from the granitic Seychelles islands, Mahé and Silhouette, and none from the coral islands, which are too dry to harbour Marattiaceae. These three species are described in detail. The newly described Angiopteris chongsengiana is characterized by the elongated terminal pinnules and progressively reduced distal pairs of pinnules. Based on phylogenetic molecular analyses the Ptisana fraxinea complex is discussed and several new combinations are proposed. The Seychellois Ptisana is most closely related to Ascension Island endemic P. purpurascens and is described as a new species, Ptisana laboudalloniana. It differs from P. fraxinea in its winged secondary rachises and from P. salicifolia in its smaller habit, with the laminae shorter than broad and shorter than the petioles. Preliminary revisions of other fern families indicate that more discoveries are likely to be made in the fern flora of the Seychelles.

Three coelomycete species with muriform conidia were collected in Italy and subjected to morpho-molecular analyses. In morphology, all species are similar to Camarosporium sensu stricto. Based on morphology, one was identified as C. spartii and the other two taxa are introduced as new species, viz. C. clematidis and C. robiniicola. Maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses of the combined LSU, SSU and ITS dataset show that the three taxa cluster with C. quaternatum, the type species of Camarosporium, with high bootstrap and PP values. All four species can be considered as Camarosporium sensu stricto. Cucurbitaria elongata groups in the Camarosporium clade near to Camarosporium robiniicola and is considered that it is not congeneric with Cucurbitaria sensu stricto (Cucurbitariaceae).
