A new deep-sea species of Epimeria Costa in Hope, 1851 (Amphipoda, Amphilochidea, Epimeriidae) from off southwestern Mexico

A single ovigerous female specimen of a new species of Epimeria Costa in Hope, 1851 was collected from deep sea, off southwestern Mexico, in the eastern Pacific. Epimeria karamani sp. nov., is most similar to females of E. cora J.L. Barnard, 1971, E. pacifica Gurjanova, 1995 and Epimeria morronei Winfield, Ortiz & Hendrickx, 2013. However, it differs from these species by: eyes long and slightly kidney-shaped; pleonite 3 strongly carinate, with dorsal tooth produced and acute; urosomite 1 with a wide mid-dorsal notch and a strong, upright blunt tooth; coxa 3 anterior margin slightly truncate and with two processes marginally; coxa 4 ventral margin linear, with facial granules and simple setae; gnathopods palm with distal bifid setae; telson straight medially, distal margin crenulate and with minute setae. The new species described herein increases the number of Epimeria species from the Pacific Ocean to 14, and from the eastern Pacific to three.

A new species of the rare caridean genus Bresilia Calman, 1896, B. cinctus, is described and illustrated on the basis of a single ovigerous female specimen collected from Sagami Bay, central Japan, at 218–318 m depth. The new species is morphologically most similar to B. rufioculus Komai & Yamada, 2011, known only from shallow water cave of Ie Island (depths 14–17 m), Okinawa Islands, Ryukyu Islands, but many characters, including the proportionally shorter rostrum, the well developed suborbital lobe of the carapace, and the presence of a spiniform seta on the ventral surface of the pereopod 1 palm, immediately distinguish the new species from B. rufioculus. Bresilia cinctus n. sp. is the first species of the genus known from the Japanese main islands. The discovery of the new species led us to reassess the merit of the informal division of Bresilia proposed by Komai & Yamada (2010). An identification key to the ten named species of Bresilia is presented.

A new palaemonid shrimp, Palaemonella shirakawai sp. nov., is described and illustrated on the basis of a single ovigerous female specimen captured from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. It appears closest to P. aliska Marin by sharing the median carina of the carapace armed with dorsal rostral teeth extending posterior to the level of the hepatic tooth, but is immediately differentiated by the shorter rostrum, a rounded posterior margin of the telson, an elongate antennal scaphocerite with a truncate distal margin of lamella, and the longer second pereiopod. The present new species is an associate of burrow dwelling fishes belonging to the family Opistognathidae.

Recent collections of deep-sea majid crabs from the South Pacific Ocean and Taiwan provide new records of five species of Cyrtomaia Miers, 1886, and a new species from French Polynesia, C. polynesica n. sp. The news species is most similar to the recently described C. micronesica Richer de Forges & Ng, 2007, but differs from this species in the morphology of its carapace and pereopods.

A new species of the genus Munida Leach, 1820, is described and illustrated based on a single specimen from the deep-sea hydrothermal vent on the Eastern Pacific Rise. Munida alba sp. nov. closely resembles M. ampliantennulata Komai, 2011, M. watatsumin Komai, 2014. and M. magniantennulata, but differences in the morphologies of the third maxilliped, pollex of the cheliped and the third segment of the antennal peduncle readily distinguish the new species from the three relatives. The new species is the fourth of the genus occurring at the hydrothermal vent areas.

The description of this single species is necessary to facilitate the publication of ongoing research conducted by Rita Vargas at the Museum of Zoology, University of Costa Rica, dealing with the associated microfauna. Presently 24 species of Leptogorgia have been reported for the eastern Pacific, 13 of which have been found in Costa Rica (Breedy & Cortés 2011). Although octocoral surveys have been conducted as part of biodiversity studies, there is no published information regarding the occurrence of this taxon in Golfo Dulce. Here we describe a new species of Leptogorgia and compare it with other Leptogorgia species with similar characteristics. Golfo Dulce is a bay located on the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. It is about 50 km long, 10–15 km wide, and covers an area of approximately 680 km². The inner part of Golfo Dulce has a maximum depth of slightly over 200 m with a 60 m deep sill at the opening to the Pacific Ocean (Cortés 1999). It has been considered a tropical fjord because of the bathymetry and the presence of anoxic deep waters (Cortés 1999, Svendsen et al. 2006). Specimens were collected by Scuba diving, preserved in 70% ethanol or air dried, and treated and identified following the current methodology (Breedy & Guzman 2002). The holotype and paratypes are deposited in the Museo de Zoología, Universidad de Costa Rica (MZUCR, formerly UCR), San José, P.O. Box 11501-2060, Costa Rica.

A new aegisthid copepod, Cerviniopsis reducta sp. nov. is described from the deep sea in Sagami Bay, Japan. The newspecies has superficial resemblance to C. minutiseta Ito, 1983 in the armature formula of swimming legs. However theydiffer from each other in the shape of setae of the swimming legs, the distal margin of operculum, length of caudal rami,and the location of setae on P5 exopod. Also, the male of Neocervinia itoi Lee & Yoo, 1998 is described on the basis ofsamples collected from around the type locality in Sagami Bay, Japan. Sexual dimorphism of N. itoi male can be observedin the fused rostrum, atrophied mouthparts, P5, and P6. The sixth leg is symmetrical and both gonopores are presumablyactive, based on the presence of two spermatophores internally in the genital segment. This paper reports for the first timeon the sexually dimorphic characters in the genus Neocervinia Huys, Mobjerg & Kristensen, 1997, reinstating its generic status with the newly revealed male characters.

A new species of Mysidium from the eastern tropical Pacific, Mexico, is described, representing the second species of this genus described for the Pacific Ocean and the eighth species reported worldwide. Mysidium pumae sp. nov. is distinguished from the other species of the genus by several characters including: the lanceolate appendix masculina, 3× as long as wide, tapering distally, with a distal tuft of 16 setae and an inner proximal tuft of more than 30 setae, the male pleopod 4 with endopod bearing 3 setae, the exopod with 4 articles, the modified seta from article 3 of the exopod bifid, telson 2.3× as long as wide, distally concave. A table with the main differences among all the known species in the genus is provided.

A new species of Hyalascus is described from the submarine volcanic crater seamount of Andaman Back-arc Basin, Indian Ocean. The genus was previously known in the Pacific Ocean only.
