On Sahastata (Araneae: Filistatidae): complementary description of the generotype and two new species from Oman and Morocco

The Filistatinae genus Sahastata Benoit, 1968 is distributed in arid and semi-arid areas, from westernmost Sahara to India, and includes seven known species. Four of these are only known from one sex, including Sahastata nigra (Simon, 1897), the type species. Here we present the first description of a male of this species collected near the type locality in Muscat, Oman. Additionally, two new species are described: S. wunderlichi sp. nov. (♂♀, Morocco) and S. wesolowskae sp. nov. (♂♀, Oman). Sahastata infuscata (Kulczyński, 1901) is newly recorded from Kenya and Yemen and S. nigra is newly recorded from the United Arab Emirates. DNA barcodes are given for S. nigra and the two new species. We observed some details of the life cycle of three Sahastata species, including clutch size, time to maturation, and a biased sex ratio for individuals raised from egg sacs, indicating that only 20–25% of specimens reaching adulthood are males. We provide SEM images of spiders of this genus, some observations on the morphology of spinnerets and male palps, and a distribution map of the species included in the genus.

Literature about Mesitiinae Kieffer, 1914 has not been treated extensively from a taxonomic viewpoint in comparison with other subfamilies in Bethylidae Latreille, 1802. Our research on species of Metrionotus Móczár, 1970, Clytrovorus Nagy, 1972 and Sulcomesitius Móczár, 1970 revealed a new hypopygium shape pattern, namely a ‘star-shaped’ hypopygium, which is characteristic of a new genus, Astromesitius gen. nov., with two new species Astromesitius thionyi gen. et sp. nov. and Astromesitius olavoi gen. et sp. nov. The descriptions of both new species are based on male specimens collected in Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. Astromesitius quatei (Móczár, 1977) gen. et comb. nov. is designated as type species for the new genus, which is erected for a total of seven species. The main diagnostic characteristics are the head longer than wide; a clypeus with a median lobe quadrate; an antenna with distinct long setae, with pedicel caliciform, and with flagellomeres long and caliciform; pronotum and anteromesoscutum with longitudinal sulcus indistinct or absent; metapectal-propodeal complex with posterior projection hardly distinct or absent; hypopygium star-shaped; genitalia with aedeagus slender and fusiform.

The spider genusPterotrichaKulczyński, 1903 (Gnaphosidae) is surveyed in Iran. To date, three species of this genus were known in the country:P.loeffleri(Roewer, 1955),P.lentiginosa(C. L. Koch, 1837) andP.pseudoparasyriacaNuruyeva & Huseynov, 2016. Here two new species are described,P.kovblyukiZamani & Marusik,sp. n.(♂, western Iran) andP.montanaZamani & Marusik,sp. n.(♀, central and southwestern Iran), and P.cf.dalmasi Fage, 1929 (from Algeria to Jordan) is reported in Iran for the first time.PterotrichatikaderiGajbe, 1983syn. n.(India) andP.loeffleri(Roewer, 1955),syn. n.are synonymized withP.strandiSpassky, 1936 (hitherto known from Turkmenistan only). The record ofP.lentiginosafrom Iran is apparently based on misidentification. A distribution map of the genus in Iran with new provincial records is provided. In addition,IranotrichaZamani & Marusik,gen. n., a new genus closely related toPterotricha, is described from southeastern Iran with the type speciesI.lutensisZamani & Marusik,sp. n.

The article describes a new genus, Laberlia (type species − Langsdorfia bellaria Dognin, 1911), including three species, distributed in northern and central Andes (the territory of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru). We establish a new combination: Laberlia bellaria (Dognin, 1911) comb. nov. Two new species are described: Laberlia illapai Yakovlev, Naydenov, Penco sp. nov. (type locality − Ecuador, Morona Santiago, 55 km Road Rio Bamba-Macas) and Laberlia apusorum Yakovlev, Naydenov, Penco sp. nov. (type locality – Peru, La Libertad, Pataz prov., S of Tayabamba). The article is illustrated with images of type specimens and male genital structures, the distribution map is provided.

The spider genus Sphingius Thorell, 1890, with four Chinese species, is reviewed. Among these, Sphingius hainan sp. nov. and S. zhangi sp. nov. are new to science. In addition, Scotophaeoides sinensis Schenkel, 1963, the type species of Scotophaeoides Schenkel, 1963 (Gnaphosidae), is transferred to Sphingius (Liocranidae), thus Sphingius is a senior synonym of Scotophaeoides. The species Sphingius pingtung Tso, Zhang, Zhu & Zhang, 2005 is redescribed and illustrated. A distribution map of Chinese Sphingius is provided.

Following a large survey of the Neotropical Arctiinae using the DNA barcodes technique (COI gene sequencing), Echeta trinotata Reich, 1933 was found to be in fact a complex of three cryptic highly genetically divergent species. The two new species are described as Echeta apatela sp. nov. from the foothills of the Andean Cordillera and Echeta rhodoptera sp. nov. from the Guianas shield, whereas the true Echeta trinotata is distributed along the lower Amazon from Manaus to Belém. Images of adults, male genitalia, genetic distance tree and distribution map are provided for the whole species group.

Abstract—Turnera macrosperma, a new species from the Brazilian Cerrado, is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to the series Turnera and can be characterized by the white petals with dark blue/violet basal spot and large seeds with papillose aril. SEM images, distribution map, and comments on taxonomy and morphology are presented.
