Taxonomic review of the planthopper genus Orthopagus (Hemiptera, Fulgoromorpha, Dictyopharidae), with descriptions of two new species

The Oriental and eastern Palaearctic planthopper genusOrthopagusUhler, 1897 (Hemiptera, Fulgoromorpha, Dictyopharidae, Dictyopharinae, Orthopagini) is revised. Six species are included:O.bartlettiSong, Malenovský & Deckert,sp. n.(described from India),O.exoletus(Melichar, 1903),comb. n.,stat. rev.(material studied from India and Sri Lanka),O.hainanensisSong, Chen & Liang,sp. n.(described from China: Hainan island),O.lunuliferUhler, 1897 (the type species of the genus; confirmed from Japan, China, Vietnam, Laos, India, and Nepal),O.philippinusMelichar, 1914 (Philippines), andO.splendens(Germar, 1830) (confirmed from China, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Malaysia, and Indonesia).OrthopagusheliosMelichar, 1912 is newly synonymized withO.lunulifer. Lectotypes are designated forO.helios, O.heliosvar.diffusus Melichar, 1912,O.elegansMelichar, 1912, andO.philippinus.DictyopharaindianaWalker, 1851 is considered a nomen dubium. All species are redescribed, including habitus photographs and detailed illustrations of the male genitalia. Female genitalia are described for the genus for the first time. A key for identification of the species ofOrthopagusand a distribution map are given.

Two New Species

The Australian species of the small heterogastrid genus Parathyginus Scudder, 1957 have been reviewed, resulting in the establishment of the junior subjective synonymy of P. doddi (Distant, 1918) with P. signifer (Walker, 1872), and the description of two new species, P. australis sp. nov. and P. acuminatus sp. nov. A redescription of the genus is provided with emphasis on male and female genitalia characters, along with a key to all included Australian species. Male genitalia, particularly the details of the aedeagus, have been rarely studied in this genus or for that matter the family Heterogastridae particularly due to the difficulty in inflating the inflatable sections. In this study, therefore, an attempt was made to fully inflate and describe the aedeagus of all the species included in this contribution, as well as of Heterogaster urticae (Fabricius, 1775), the type species of the oldest genus Heterogaster Schilling, 1829, of the family Heterogastridae.

The Oriental leafhopper genus Riseveinus Li is redefined with the redescription of its type species Riseveinus sinensis (Jacobi), and descriptions of two new species: Riseveinus asymmetricus sp. nov. and Riseveinus compressus sp. nov. The female genitalia of the species of this genus are described for the first time. One new combination, Riseveinus albiveinus (Li) n. comb., is also proposed. Photographs and a key to all aforementioned species are provided. The relationship of this genus to related genera is discussed.

The Prabhasa Moore, 1878 genus-group is reviewed. The male and female genitalia of Prabhasa venosa Moore, 1878, the type species of the genus, are described and illustrated for the first time. Two new genera, Macohasa Dubatolov, Volynkin & Kishida, gen. nov. and Chinasa Dubatolov, Volynkin & Kishida, gen. nov. and two new species, Macohasa cernyi Dubatolov, Volynkin & Kishida, sp. nov. and Chinasa sapa Dubatolov, Volynkin & Kishida, sp. nov. are described for Prabhasa venosa sensu authors. Two new species of the genus Agrisius Walker, 1855, A. orhanti Volynkin, Dubatolov & Kishida, sp. n. and A. leloii Volynkin, Dubatolov & Kishida, sp. n. are described from South Laos and Vietnam respectively. A. orhanti sp. n. belongs to the A. japonicus Leech, 1889 species-group. Whereas, the male genitalia structure of A. leloii sp. n. is intermediate between those of the A. japonicus and the A. guttivitta Walker, 1855 species-groups, therefore, it is assigned to a separated species-group (the A. leloii species-group). Agrisius dubatolovi Orhant, 2012 is downgraded as a subspecies of A. japonicus: Agrisius japonicus dubatolovi Orhant, 2012, stat. nov. Female genitalia of species of the A. japonicus and most of the A. guttivitta species-groups are illustrated for the first time.

Two New Species

The genus Thyridosmylus Krüger (Neuroptera: Osmylidae) belongs to the subfamily Spilosmylinae based on the type species Osmylus langii Mclachlan 1870 (Krüger 1913). The genus has 19 species mainly distributed in Asia, especially in China where there are 14 species: Thyridosmylus polyacanthus sp. nov., Thyridosmylus trimaculatus sp. nov., Thyridosmylus minoroides Yang, 1987, Thyridosmylus laetus Yang, 1988, Thyridosmylus pulchrus Yang, 1988, Thyridosmylus medoganus Yang, 1988, Thyridosmylus similaminor Yang, 1992, Thyridosmylus trifasciatus Yang, 1993, Thyridosmylus triypsiloneurus Yang, 1995, Thyridosmylus maolanus Yang, 1993, Thyridosmylus qianus Yang, 1993, Thyridosmylus fuscus Yang, 1999, Thyridosmylus vulgatus Yang, 1999 and Thyridomsylus pallidius Yang, 2002. Three species are described from India (Thyridosmylus langii (McLachlan 1870), Thyridosmylus perspicillaris (Gerstaecker, 1885), Thyridosmylus pustulatus Kimmis 1942) while another two species are known from Madagascar (Thyridosmylus marmoratus Fraser, 1955 and Thyridosmylus punctulatus (Navás, 1933)). Gerstaecker (1885) described one subspecies Thyridosmylus perspicillaris perspicillaris Gerstaecker and Kimmins (1942) erected three additional subspecies, Thyridosmylus langii angustus Kimmins, 1942, Thyridosmylus perspicillaris fenestratus Kimmins, 1942, Thyridosmylus perspicillaris minor Kimmins, 1942. However due to rampant variation in colouration and venation, the valid status of these subspecies is doubted and they are provisionally treated as synonyms herein. Thyridosmylus is characterised by fuscous and maculate forewings and largely hyaline hind wings, moderately sized and usually ochreous body, costal cross-veins simple and radial field with numerous cross veins (not including gradates). In the male genitalia, the anal plate generally elevates into a fingerlike process on the dorsal margin, and parameres are commonly arcuate in lateral view. Female genitalia usually have a broad anal plate, while the gonapophysis lateralis is finger-like or coniform in lateral view. In this paper, two new species are described from China. Terminology follows Tjeder (1957) and New (1986). All the type specimens are deposited in the Entomological Museum of China Agricultural University (CAU), Beijing.

Small Genus

The small genus Spininola was recently erected by László, Ronkay & Witt (2010) with the type species Nola loxoscia Hampson, 1900. They tabulated six species in the genus, S. loxoscia (Hampson, 1900), S. vesiculalis (Eecke, 1926), S. trilinea (Marumo, 1923), S. denticulata (Moore, 1888), S. fuscibasalis (Hampson, 1896) and S. armata László, Ronkay & Witt, 2010 from Thailand. The genus is distributed in eastern Asia, from Nepal and Sri Lanka in the west, to Japan in the north and Sumatra in the south. In our surveys, two new species were found and are described herein, and S. loxoscia (Hampson, 1900) is recorded for the first time from China (Fig. 1).

A total of 22 genera and 79 species of Thyatiridae (Insecta: Lepidoptera) from Yunnan, China are reviewed. Forty of these species are examined in detail, and the wing markings and genitalia of the male/female adults are illustrated. The following five species are recorded from Yunnan for the first time: Psidopala undulans (Hampson, [1893]), Tethea (Tethea) punctorenalia (Houlbert, 1921), Toxoides sichuanensis Zhuang, Owada & Wang, 2014, Mimopsestis basalis sinensis László, Ronkay, Ronkay & Witt, 2007 and Betapsestis brevis (Leech, 1900). Two new species, Parapsestis naxii sp. n. and Parapsestis tachengensis sp. n., are described and their DNA bar codes are provided using genbank accession number. Type species of genus Parapsestis, Parapsestis argenteopicta, we also provide its genbank accession number. Stenopsestis bruna Jiang, Yang, Xue & Han, 2015 is synonymized with Toxoides sichuanensis Zhuang, Owada & Wang, 2014. Biogeographical features of the family in Yunnan are also briefly discussed.

The genus Indocloeon Müller-Liebenau 1982 (s. l.) is divided into two subgenera, the subgenus Indocloeon (s. str.) and the subgenus Hindocloeon subgen. n. which differ one from another by certain characters of larvae, winged stages and eggs. The subgenus Indocloeon is distributed in Sri Lanka only and includes two species, Indocloeon (Indocloeon) primum Müller-Liebenau 1982, and Indocloeon (Indocloeon) secundum sp. n., which are described here based on larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing. The subgenus Hindocloeon (type species Indocloeon indonesiae Kluge 2012) is widely distributed in the Oriental region. A new species Indocloeon (Hindocloeon) continentale sp. n. is described from Thailand based on larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing; subimagines presumably placed in this species, are reported from southern India. Some characters of Indocloeon (Hindocloeon) indonesiae Kluge 2012 are illustrated for the first time. The species originally described as Cloeon longistylus Demoulin 1969 is placed in Indocloeon as Indocloeon (Hindocloeon) longistylus comb. n. Subimagines of two unnamed species of Hindocloeon are reported from Vietnam and Java. Keys to known larvae and imagines are given.
