Two new species of Periphloea Redtenbacher are described based on female specimens from the Brazilian Amazon Basin, namely: P. amazonica sp. nov. (from North of Manaus, ZF-2 reserve, State of Amazonas, Brazil) and P. paraensis sp. nov. (from Eldorado dos Carajás, State of Pará, Brazil). The new species are compared to the other three species (all known from females) and a map of geographical records of the genus is provided, as well as an identification key to females of Periphloea.

Four species ofLaonice(Annelida: Spionidae) were collected from the lower bathyal depths (3300–3700 m) in the Whittard Canyon, NE Atlantic. Two are herewith described as new species:Laonice whittardensissp. nov. andLaonice nataesp. nov. The other two areLaonice blakeiSikorski & Jirkov, 1988 andLaonice magnacristataMaciolek, 2000.Laonice whittardensishas genital pouches appearing from chaetiger 3, prostomium free of peristomium and bidentate hooks.Laonice nataebelongs to the subgenusAppelloefianov. with prostomium distinct from the peristomium, more than two vertical rows of capillaries in several anterior chaetigers, genital pouches present on a limited number of segments or totally absent. However, the absence of pronounced anterior widening of the body together with anterior branchiae, which are remarkably (nearly twice) longer than the notopodial postchaetal lobes, the narrow lanceolate notopodial postchaetal lobes, the pronounced pointedness of all postchaetal lobes (both notopodial and neuropodial) in the anterior half of body at least, and absence of genital pouches and the size of the body all distinguishL. nataefrom other species belonging to this subgenus. An identification key to all nine known deep-water (>400 m depth)Laonicespecies in North Atlantic is given and four previously recognized sub-generic groups are formally named:Laonice, Sarsianasubgen. nov.,Appelloefiasubgen. nov.,Norgensiasubgen. nov.

We describe here two new species of the genus Phalangopsis Serville, 1831 from the Brazilian Amazon Forest. The male genitalia and the female copulatory papilla were described, and a combination of diagnostic characteristics was given to separate both new species from the other described species. The principal morphological characteristics of this genus were discussed.

Two new species of Brasineura are described from Brazil based on male specimens: Brasineura calori sp. n. (Bahia: Brazil) and Brasineura morrense sp. n. (Bahia: Brazil). They differ from the other species in the genus, in which the males are known, by hypandrium and phallosome structures. New records and comments on variation in the fore- and hind- wing venation of B. troglophilica Silva-Neto & García Aldrete and B. diamantina Silva-Neto & García Aldrete are presented. The identification key to male Brasineura species is updated.

Two new species of the Neotropical genus of Empidinae, Opeatocerata: O. trilobata sp. nov. and O. melanderi sp. nov., are described and illustrated from Manaus. This is the first record of the genus from Brazilian Amazonia.

Two new species of the largely Brazilian Didymopanax clade of Schefflera (Araliaceae) are here described, illustrated, and compared to similar taxa. Both are from poorly sampled areas in the Brazilian Amazon Basin. Schefflera prancei is known only from the Serra do Divisor National Park, at the border between Brazil and Peru. It differs from the similar S. confusa by its leaflets with narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate blades, with an acuminate to cuspidate apex, and the light brown to grayish sericeous indument on the abaxial blade surface. The second new species, Schefflera pubicarpa, is found in central Amazonian forests, and differs from similar species of the clade by a combination of characters, including a large-tree habit, leaves with 8 to 10 leaflets, inflorescences with ascending secondary branches and lacking tertiary branches, flowers with trichomes along the styles, and pubescent fruits. While this species appears to have a restricted distribution in Brazil, a westward extension reaching into Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador may be likely as new collections from intermediate areas become available.

Peckoltia contains 12 described species, eight of which are considered valid. Peckoltia arenaria, P. filicaudata, and P. ucayalensis are recognized as synonyms of P. bachi and P. kuhlmanni is recognized as a synonym of P. vittata. In addition, two new species are described. The type species of Peckoltichthys and Sophiancistrus are synonyms of P. bachi and both genera are recognized as junior synonyms of Peckoltia. The species of Peckoltia range throughout much of the Amazon basin, the upper Orinoco, the upper Essequibo, and perhaps the Maroni, and can be identified from most other ancistrins by having dentaries that form angle of 90° or less and from others with angled dentaries by lacking the synapomorphies of those genera. The species of Peckoltia vary from one another mostly in coloration. Peckoltia braueri, P. caenosa n. sp., P. cavatica and P. vittata lack spots on the head while the other species have them. Peckoltia braueri and P. cavatica have orange bands in the dorsal and caudal fins and have the bones and plates of the head and nape outlined in black (vs. no orange bands and head plates and bones not outlined in black in P. caenosa and P. vittata). Peckoltia caenosa has a color pattern consisting of dark vermiculations on the head and abdomen (vs. saddles or blotches on the head and faint dark spots on the abdomen in P. vittata). Among the species with spots on the head, P. lineola n. sp. and P. vermiculata have some of the spots combining to form vermiculations (vs. spots free in P. bachi, P. brevis, P. furcata, and P.oligospila) with the vermiculations larger than the pupil in P. lineola and narrower in P. vermiculata and the vermiculations radiating from a central point in P. vermiculata vs. no such pattern in P. lineola. Peckoltia bachi can be identified from the other species by having widened pelvic-fin spines that can be pulled ventrally such that they are completely ventral and parallel to the body (vs. pelvic-fin spines narrow and cannot be adducted ventral to body) and by having the eye low on the head (vs. high). Peckoltia brevis can be identified from P. furcata and P. oligospila by having well-developed dorsal saddles (vs. saddles faint), no spots on the body behind the nape (vs. spots generally present behind the nape); from P. oligospila by having bands in the caudal fin (vs. spots); and from P. furcata by having the lower caudal-fin spine longer than the upper (vs. upper spine longer). Peckoltia furcata can be identified from P. oligospila by having the upper caudal-fin spine longer than the lower (vs. lower spine longer) and by having bands in the caudal fin (vs. spots). Ancistrus yaravi had been recognized as a species of Peckoltia. The type of A. yaravi is lost, but the original description suggests that the species is the senior synonym of Neblinichthys roraima. A revised morphological phylogeny demonstrates the lack of support for Peckoltia and Hemiancistrus as monophyletic, and phenetic definitions are provided for the two genera. The phylogeny also demonstrates a lack of support of the genus Watawata.

Phyllolabis eiroae sp. nov. and P. martinhalli sp. nov. are described from the centre of the Iberian Peninsula. These two remarkable species were collected using carrion-baited traps, running during winter, in several localities of Madrid province (Spain). The two new species are well differentiated from the other Phyllolabis Osten Sacken species recorded from the Iberian Peninsula, P. savtshenkoi Theowald, and those from the west Palaearctic. An identification key to differentiate the three Phyllolabis species occurring in the Iberian Peninsula is provided. The first images of P. savtshenkoi, based on the holotype and a male specimen recorded from a cave located in Jaén (Spain), are also provided.

Two new species of Cyphoderus Nicolet are described from northern Brazil: C. mucrominimus sp. nov. from Curionópolis, Pará; and C. mucrostrimenus sp. nov. from Parauapebas, Pará. These species belong to tridenticulati and bidenticulati groups respectively. The chaetotaxy of head and whole body are described and an identification key for the species with recorded distribution in Brazil is provided.

ABSTRACT Brasergasilus jaraquensis gen. et sp. nov. and B. anodus sp. nov. (Copepoda: Cyclopidea: Ergasilidae), gill parasites of Semaprochiiodus insignis (Schomburgk) and Anodus elongatus Spix, are described from the Amazon River. The new genus has only three pairs of swimming legs and in this respect is similar only to one species from New Zealand, Abergasilus amplexus Hewitt, 1978. The two genera also have in common a three-segmented prehensile antenna. Abergasilus, however, has the base of the second antennal segment developed into a massive spine which abutts against the claw-like third segment. The new genus completely lacks this fundamental structure. Aditionally, Abergasilus has six free thoracic segments while the new genus only has five. Abergasilinae Subfam. nov. is proposed for these two genera and their three species. Ergasilinae nom. nov. is provisionally defined and proposed to include the other 11 genera of the family. The type species of Brasergasilus gen. nov. is B. jaraquensis sp. nov. and it can be distinguished from B. anodus sp. nov. by the following characteristics: 1) The type species is larger and of a greenish coloration while B. anodus has fewer pigment granules that are of a bluish tint. 2) B. jaraquensis has a more slender second antenna and the most abrupt bend of the claw occurs distally; the second antenna of B. anodus is thicker and the abrupt bend Is found proximally. 3) The uropod of the type species has two setae and two small spines, while that of the other species has three setae and lacks spines. 4) The first leg of B. jaraquensis is laterally serrate while that of B. anodus is pectinate. The two species parasitize two different genera of host fish and are probably host specific.

Syntypes of Peliosanthes bakeri and four varieties (var. clarkei, var. minor, var. princeps and var. violacea) of P. violacea were reexamined to review their identities. As a result, it turned out that the syntypes of P. bakeri comprise two species, P. griffithii and P. subspicata sp. nov., and those of P. violacea include at least six species, P. griffithii, P. khasiana sp. nov., P. macrostegia, P. subspicata, P. teta, and P. violacea. The two new species, P. khasiana from NE India and P. subspicata from Bangladesh and NE India are described and illustrated. The other four species recognised are taxonomically revised as to their identity, circumscription and distribution. In this connection, lectotypes for five taxa are designated. An identification key for the six species recognised is also provided.
