A review of the tachinid parasitoids (Diptera: Tachinidae) of Nearctic Choristoneura species (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), with keys to adults and puparia

The genus Choristoneura (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) comprises about 16 species in the Nearctic Region and includes several destructive pests of importance to forestry and agriculture. The following 15 species of Tachinidae (Diptera) are recognized as occasional or common parasitoids of Choristoneura species in this region: Actia diffidens Curran, Actia interrupta Curran, Ceromasia auricaudata Townsend, Compsilura concinnata (Meigen), Cyzenis incrassata (Smith), Eumea caesar (Aldrich), Hemisturmia parva (Bigot), Hyphantrophaga blanda (Osten Sacken), Hyphantrophaga virilis (Aldrich and Webber), Lypha fumipennis Brooks, Madremyia saundersii (Williston), Nemorilla pyste (Walker), Nilea erecta (Coquillett), Phryxe pecosensis (Townsend), and Smidtia fumiferanae (Tothill). Keys to the adults and puparia of these tachinid species are provided. The known distribution, biology, and rates of parasitism are reviewed for each species and published host records from Choristoneura species are listed. Colour habitus images of adults, illustrations of all puparia, and illustrations of features mentioned in the adult key are included. Thirteen other species of Tachinidae recorded from Choristoneura species but excluded from the main text as highly dubious, rare, or accidental records are briefly discussed.

The Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ’s animal epistle is an intriguing work. Although in the body of the narrative the authors challenge anthropocentric preconceptions and present nonhuman animals in a more favourable light than human beings, inexplicably, the narrative ends by reconfirming the privileged status of humans. The aim of this paper is to propose an explanation for this discrepancy. I argue that the egalitarian message reflected in the body of the narrative is traceable back to the Qur'an, the main text with which the authors engage in the fable, whereas the final outcome is due to the Ikhwān's hierarchical worldview.

The ability of bismuth to maneuver between different oxidation states in a catalytic redox cycle, mimicking the canonical organometallic steps associated to a transition metal, is an elusive and unprecedented approach in the field of homogeneous catalysis. Herein we present a catalytic protocol based on bismuth, a benign and sustainable main-group element, capable of performing every organometallic step in the context of oxidative fluorination of boron compounds; a territory reserved to transition metals. A rational ligand design featuring hypervalent coordination together with a mechanistic understanding of the fundamental steps, permitted a catalytic fluorination protocol based on a Bi(III)/Bi(V) redox couple, which represents a unique example where a main-group element is capable of outperforming its transition metal counterparts.<br>A main text and supplementary material have been attached as pdf files containing all the methodology, techniques and characterization of the compounds reported.<br>

Abstract Background Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogeneous disease that represents 10–20% of breast cancer cases. The prognosis for advanced TNBC is usually poor, with a median overall survival of approximately 18 months or less. Main text New targeted therapies such as anti-PD-L1 agents are emerging as an option to treat advanced TNBC. A panel of 6 national experts with an active interest in breast cancer convened online. Panel members had either clinical or pathology experience in breast cancer. The experts pre-defined critical questions in the management of PD-L1 in TNBC, and a literature review was performed for selected topics before the online meeting. Conclusion The experts led active discussions involving a multidisciplinary team comprising pathologists and clinical oncologists. The meeting served to discuss the most relevant issues. A total of 10 critical questions for PD-L1+ TNBC were debated and are presented in this review. This article discusses the current landscape for PD-L1 tests in TNBC in Brazil.

Abstract Background Over the last decade, aggregating evidences suggested that there is a causative link between mutation in gene associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and development of several neurodegenerative disorders. Main text Recent structural and functional studies associated with mitochondrial genes have shown that mitochondrial abnormalities possibly lead to mitochondrial dysfunction. Several studies on animal models of neurodegenerative diseases and mitochondrial genes have provided compelling evidence that mitochondria is involved in the initiation as well as progression of diseases such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Huntington’s disease (HD), and Friedreich ataxia (FA). Conclusion In this mini-review, we have discussed the different etiologic and pathogenesis connected with the mitochondrial dysfunction and relevant neurodegenerative diseases that underlie the dominant part of mitochondrial genes in the disease development and its progress.
