School nursing is part of America’s hidden healthcare system. Recently, the Institute of Medicine commissioned the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons) to review progress on its Future of Nursing 2010 study. Additionally, the AARP and the Future of Nursing Campaign for Action held town halls that focused on school nursing. This article is a summary of the testimony offered to the Future of Nursing and Campaign for Action leaders about the value that school nursing brings to the health of our nation and the recommendations for action.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently released The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a path to achieve health equity. The 2021 report emphasized the role of nursing in addressing social determinants of health and inequities, as well as the need for nurses at all levels to work to their full scope of practice. The report harmonizes with the prescribed scope of practice outlined in the National Association of School Nurses’ Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice. This article outlines how frontline school nurses, state affiliates, and school nurse leaders will adopt the recommendations in their practice and in the schools and communities they serve.

The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health was published by the of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies in 2011. The Missouri Nurses Foundation and Missouri nurses modeled a sustainable project, the Early Career Nurse Innovator Project, exemplifying the intent of that report. The Missouri Nurses Foundation Executive Board comprises experienced nurses, nurse educators, nurses in other leadership roles, retired nurses, public members of the board, and administrative support staff. This article describes a project that was developed, implemented, and evaluated to recognize and encourage early-career nurses who have designed and led innovations to improve and promote the health of Missourians. Five of these early-career nurses were the recipients of monetary awards to encourage future innovations; the second recognition cycle is in the planning phase. Through the work of the Missouri Nurses Foundation, the scholarship of bedside nurses was recognized.

Nurses have long attempted to secure a unique identity for the profession. Many scholars are now promoting an interdisciplinary framework for nursing practice. Fawcett is convinced that interdisciplinary practice poses a danger for nursing to lose its identity and that interdisciplinary practice cannot be successful if members of each discipline do not understand the conceptual models, practice, and research of their own discipline. Dr. Janie Butts and Dr. Karen Rich interviewed Dr. Jacqueline Fawcett about her views related to discipline-specific knowledge and nursing’s future. The authors conclude that Fawcett’s scientific foundation gives nursing the solidarity and power necessary to determine the unique internal goods of its practice.
