Periods of academic transition are challenging and require medical students to adjust to new environments and expectations. Commonly cited areas of struggle include integrating into the interprofessional health care team, communication, organization and time management, and self-regulated learning. Consciously designing opportunities early in the preclinical curriculum to help students gradually build these competencies can be achieved within existing research training programs or projects. This perspective article reflects on how the medical student research training program at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine supports student growth in these areas beginning in the first year, so that students can directly apply these skills as they progress to the clinical years and beyond.

PurposeTo examine factors associated with successful publications resulting from mandatory public health research training attachment, the Trainee Intern Health Care Evaluation (TIHE) projects, at the University of Otago, Dunedin School of Medicine, New Zealand.MethodsA total of 227 TIHE projects completed during the period from January 1985 to December 2013 were included in the study. In February 2016, Medline and Google Scholar databases were searched independently by both authors for publications using predefined search criteria.ResultsOverall, 25 (11.1%) out of 227 projects resulted in 19 articles, 3 conference presentations/abstracts and 4 cited report abstracts. Nineteen (8.4%) projects resulted in 22 peer-reviewed journal publications, the majority of which were original articles (86.4%). The number of projects commissioned by a client was independently associated with the likelihood of publication, conference abstract or citation of the project report (OR 1.40; P<0.01, 95% CI 1.14 to 1.71). The number of authors and the number of non-student authors were positively associated with publication in higher impact journals, while student first-authored articles were more likely to be published in lower impact journals. Projects completed in more recent years were more likely to be published.ConclusionsMandatory medical student research experiences promote tangible research output. These findings may help to influence policy around the introduction of required medical school research and facilitate encouraging academic careers among medical students. Future research could focus on examining how different student-related, supervisor-related and programme-related factors influence publication rates from mandatory medical student research attachments.

Purpose Recruiting medical students into women’s health and gender-based medical research is important internationally. Medical student research training is critical for developing future women’s health leaders who are adept at conducting high-impact research. This paper aims to describe a six-month medical student research fellowship in women’s health in terms of fellowship recipients’ publications related to their research project and future academic careers. Design/methodology/approach Targeted searches of fellowship recipients and their fellowship mentors were conducted in PubMed and Scopus from 2001–2017. Prior student fellows were also e-mailed and called to assess whether they held academic positions. Findings Since 2001, funds have been secured to support a total of 83 students (69 women, 14 men) in a mentored research experience in women’s health and gender-based medicine. In total, 48 out of the 83 (57.8%) medical student fellowship recipients published at least one peer-reviewed research paper or scientific review related to their research project. Of the 50 prior recipients with a least five years of follow-up data (41 women, 9 men), 26 (52%) were in academic careers. Research limitations/implications Because this is an observational study and only medical students interested in women’s health applied to be a student fellow, there is an inability to infer causality. Practical implications Following completion of the medical student research training fellowship in women’s health, more than half of recipients published in peer-reviewed medical journals on their research project. Originality/value This study explores the association of an innovative medical student experience in women’s health research on subsequent fellowship-related publications and career outcomes, contributing to the body of knowledge on the influence of a mentored research leadership program for medical students on academic professional development.
