In this study, the parameters for underwater laser cutting of 50-mm thick stainless steel, which is typically used in nuclear power structures, are investigated. The focal position of laser beam significantly affects the cutting quality. In particular, in the cutting of the thick sample, change in the focal position determines the kerf width and the roughness of the cut surface. Moreover, the effects of the variation of kerf width and the cut surface characteristics on the focal position of the laser beam are investigated. As the focal position moved to the inside of the material, the upper kerf width increased, but the quality of the cut surface was improved.

Determination of radiation embrittlement in nuclear reactor pressure vessels is crucial to assessing safe operative lifetimes for many aging nuclear power plants. Conservative nuclear fluence estimates and trace impurity diagnosis of the weldment material are the basis of radiation embrittlement analysis. Copper is thought to be a key impurity contributing to radiation embrittlement. In this paper, the application of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) as a means to assess radiation embrittlement by the detection and quantification of copper in A553b steel was investigated. A LIBS configuration completely coupled by fiber optics was attempted, but because of low laser power and fiber losses, fiber-optic delivery of the laser beam was unsuccessful. Consequently, hard optics (lenses and mirrors) were employed for laser beam delivery. The plasma emission was delivered successfully via fiber optics to the detection apparatus. Copper measurements were made from custom-fabricated steel samples. Comparison of the LIBS results to an independent atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) analysis showed LIBS to be of comparable accuracy, especially in low-level copper samples.

A new inside-laser coaxial wire feeding processing is adopted that can ensure a good axiality between wire and laser beam through transmitting wire along the centerline of the laser beam. Basing on the optimization of process parameters and single beads cladding experiments, the causes of the uneven surface of the formed part is analyzed. By putting forward a method of the real-time control of the defocusing amount and the laser power, a fine multi-layer hollow rotary part is formed. The formed part has no subsidence damage and crack on the whole cladding layer. The size of the error is small and the hardness of the laser cladding is uniformly distributed.
