The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a web-based problem-based school administrator training program (WB-PBSAT) in practice and the effect of training on participants' attitudes towards web based learning. Mixed method approach was used in this study. While the quantitative dimension of the study was conducted within the framework of one group pre-test post-test experimental design, focus group interviews was performed in the qualitative dimension. Participants of the experimental and the control groups were determined by purposive sampling. Attitudes Toward Web-Based Learning (ATWBL) Scale was used to determine the participants' attitudes towards web-based learning, and the Program Assessment Scale was used to evaluate the training process. According to the findings it was concluded that the training process positively affected the attitudes of the participants towards web-based learning and training process has also provided significant contributions to participants' establishing the link between theory and practice and self-directed learning. Based on these results, some suggestions for educational policy makers and practitioners were developed for the use of a web-based problem-based learning in school administrators' pre-service and in-service training programs.

This study describes a Web-based, in-service training program designed by Middle East Technical University in collaboration with the National Police in Turkey. The aims of this program were to diminish the cost of in-service training for chief superintendents and 3rd rank commissioners from around the country and to bridge the geographical distance between the trainees and trainers. In two years of training, 2,072 chief superintendents and 270 3rd rank commissioners attended the Web-based, in-service training program. In this chapter, we describe the resulting experiences and lessons learned from a technical, pedagogical, and managerial perspective. Recommendations are offered for similar projects and collaborations among university and governmental institutions.

Abstract Background There is currently a strong emphasis on person-centred care (PCC) and communication; however, little research has been conducted on how to implement person-centred communication in home care settings. Therefore, the ACTION (A person-centred CommunicaTION) programme, which is a web-based education programme focusing on person-centred communication developed for nurse assistants (NAs) providing home care for older persons, was implemented. This paper reports on the process evaluation conducted with the aim to describe and evaluate the implementation of the ACTION programme. Methods A descriptive design with a mixed method approach was used. Twenty-seven NAs from two units in Sweden were recruited, and 23 of them were offered the educational intervention. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from multiple sources before, during and after the implementation. Quantitative data were used to analyse demographics, attendance and participation, while qualitative data were used to evaluate experiences of the implementation and contextual factors influencing the implementation. Results The evaluation showed a high degree of NA participation in the first five education modules, and a decrease in the three remaining modules. Overall, the NAs perceived the web format to be easy to use and appreciated the flexibility and accessibility. The content was described as important. Challenges included time constraints; the heavy workload; and a lack of interaction, space and equipment to complete the programme. Conclusions The results suggest that web-based education seems to be an appropriate strategy in home care settings; however, areas for improvement were identified. Our findings show that participants appreciated the web-based learning format in terms of accessibility and flexibility, as well as the face-to-face group discussions. The critical importance of organizational support and available resources are highlighted, such as management involvement and local facilitation. In addition, the findings report on the implementation challenges specific to the dynamic home care context. Trial registration This intervention was implemented with nursing assistants, and the evaluation only involved nursing staff. Patients were not part of this study. Abstract Background Many community-dwelling older adults experience limitations in (instrumental) activities of daily living, resulting in the need for homecare services. Whereas services should ideally aim at maintaining independence, homecare staff often take over activities, thereby undermining older adults’ self-care skills and jeopardizing their ability to continue living at home. Reablement is an innovative care approach aimed at optimizing independence. The reablement training program ‘Stay Active at Home’ for homecare staff was designed to support the implementation of reablement in the delivery of homecare services. This study evaluated the implementation, mechanisms of impact and context of the program. Methods We conducted a process evaluation alongside a 12-month cluster randomized controlled trial, using an embedded mixed-methods design. One hundred fifty-four homecare staff members (23 nurses, 34 nurse assistants, 8 nurse aides and 89 domestic workers) from five working areas received the program. Data on the implementation (reach, dose, fidelity, adaptations and acceptability), possible mechanisms of impact (homecare staff's knowledge, attitude, skills and support) and context were collected using logbooks, registration forms, checklists, log data and focus group interviews with homecare staff (n = 23) and program trainers (n = 4). Results The program was largely implemented as intended. Homecare staff's average compliance to the program meetings was 73.4%; staff members accepted the program, and particularly valued its practical elements and team approach. They experienced positive changes in their knowledge, attitude and skills about reablement, and perceived social and organizational support from colleagues and team managers to implement reablement. However, the extent to which homecare staff implemented reablement in practice, varied. Perceived facilitators included digital care plans, the organization’s lump sum funding and newly referred clients. Perceived barriers included resistance to change from clients or their social network, complex care situations, time pressure and staff shortages. Conclusions The program was feasible to implement in the Dutch homecare setting, and was perceived as useful in daily practice. Nevertheless, integrating reablement into homecare staff's working practices remained challenging due to various personal and contextual factors. Future implementation of the program may benefit from minor program adaptations and a more stimulating work environment. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier NCT03293303). Abstract Background and Objectives Staff-resident communication is a critical part of nursing home (NH) care. Reducing elderspeak and increasing person-centered communication has been shown to reduce behavioral symptoms experienced by persons living with dementia. An online version of a successful classroom-based communication-training program that reduced staff elderspeak and resident behavioral symptoms was evaluated. The objective of this study was to establish feasibility and determine the preliminary effects of the online program in preparation for a national pragmatic clinical trial. Research Design and Methods Seven NHs were randomized to immediate intervention or wait-list control conditions. The NHs were provided with the web-based training program that staff individually accessed. Primary outcomes were knowledge scores and communication ratings of a video-recorded interaction, using pre- to post-training comparisons. Results Knowledge increased from a mean pretest score of 61.9% (SD=20.0) to a mean posttest score of 84.6% (SD=13.5) for the combined group. Knowledge significantly improved between Time 1 and Time 2 for the immediate intervention participants (p<.001), but not for the wait-list control participants (p=.091), and this difference was statistically significant (p<.001). Ability to recognize ineffective, inappropriate, non-person-centered, and elderspeak communication improved after training (p<.001). The magnitude of improvement in communication recognition was comparable to that of the original classroom format. Discussion and Implications The adapted communication intervention was feasible and improved knowledge and communication. Online instruction can improve access to quality education and is an effective means to improve dementia care by overcoming barriers to in-person training.
