AbstractIn 1967, the publication of John Ramsay's book, Folding and Fracturing of Rocks, was a landmark event that affected both of us, inspiring us into careers in structural geology. At that time, one of us was a postgraduate student at Imperial College, London, the other a second-year undergraduate at Manchester University. It is hard to convey, 50 years on, how precious this book was then. The true and lasting value is how this book has changed individuals, and influenced the teaching and research in structural geology, in Britain and around the world. In our view, Folding and Fracturing of Rocks marks the birth of modern structural geology.

SummaryStudies show the very high probability that a child with learning disabilities will grow up to be an adult with learning disabilities and will experience difficulties in his academic or professional studies and in the world of employment. Today, there is an increase in the number of students with learning disabilities in academic institutions in Israel and around the world, with the extent of students with learning disabilities in Israel being estimated at up to 15% of diagnosed students. The article discusses the problem that most studies address children and teens with learning disabilities, while knowledge about coping with students with learning disabilities in the higher education system is limited. Moreover, there seems to be no uniform policy on supporting these students. The article is addressed to policymakers and lawmakers in Israel’s higher education system, with the aim of presenting current support and proposing changes and improvements intended for these students.

The outlook for world industrial production—and consequently in the long run for world trade-is, if anything, a little more cheerful than it was in November. The prospect is still that the rise in both will be slower than in recent years; but the risk that there might be no rise at all is much smaller than it was. First, the fears of any appreciable dip in the United States economy this year have largely evaporated. Then, for the second year running, industrial production in EEC countries, after apparently flattening off in the middle of the year, rose in the fourth quarter; this adds some confirmation to the forecast of a reasonable rise in EEC output next year.


This chapter highlights some of the issues and challenges which exist in the provision of palliative and end-of-life care for people with learning disabilities and how some of these can be addressed. The challenges fall into four key areas: assessment, communication, consent, and bereavement. The reader is also signposted to websites and resources which are helpful in caring for people with learning disability at the end of their life. Concerns exist around choice and the quality of end-of-life care that people with learning disabilities may be offered. A number of different terms have evolved over the years for ‘learning disability’. Currently this term is used in the UK, but in Europe and in other parts of the world, the term ‘intellectual disability’ is used. Internationally there is a consensus that a learning disability can be identified when the following criteria are present: intellectual impairment (known as reduced IQ), social or adaptive dysfunction combined with reduced IQ, and early onset. It is thought that around 2.5% of the population in the UK has a learning disability, but it has also been predicted that this may increase by 1% per year over the next number of years.

In field trials in 1998–2000, ten varieties of the world collection of birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) were evaluated for herbage and hay yields. In all the years of testing yields from three cuttings and total annual production were evaluated. In 1999, seed yield was also recorded. As a control, alfalfa (Medicago sativa) variety was included in the experiment. The test varieties showed good productivity in the first and especially in the second year of testing, most of them exceeded alfalfa in herbage yield in individual cuttings and in total productions. As for hay yield, the differences were not so great. Local varieties showed very good productivity, predominantly in herbage yields. Of foreign varieties, the best herbage, hay and seed yielder was the Hungarian variety Puszta. There were no statistical differences in seed yield between the varieties. The yields were, however, relatively low.

The interdisciplinary practice-based research project, ‘The apotheosis of man, the forgotten peacock; from deconstruction to reconstruction to re-proposal of the male suit’, through a series of workshops and an interactive performance installation, aims to challenge the persisting conventional tradition of designing and wearing the male suit, proposing alternative perspectives by researcher – performance designer. The investigation focuses on the tools and means of processing the male suit in practice. It explores how to overcome conventions, generate artistic ideas, and how to apply this to something wearable. This visual essay demonstrates how the outcomes of three workshops fed on the creation of the experimental research driven suits. In all the workshops the participants were set the task to create a series of male garments by questioning and reinterpreting the notion of the masculinity and by using concepts and methods representative of deconstruction. Every participant designed and made a male garment by recycling a male suit jacket. The first presented workshop took place in May 2007, at the University of the Arts Bucharest, Romania and the participants were the second-year fashion design students. The second took place in September 2013 at the ‘World Stage Design Exhibition’, as part of the ‘Costume in Action series – Upcycling Costume: DeReconstructing Masculinity’. The participants were a mixture of student and professional international performance designers. The final two pages demonstrate the Plus Series suits, based on the addition of design elements to the suit.

Bugscope is a second generation educational project in the World Wide Laboratory that provides web browser based control of scientific imaging instrumentation using the Internet. We had previously demonstrated web based remote access to sophisticated scientific imaging systems several years ago in the Chickscope project. The primary goal of the Bugscope project is to demonstrate that relatively low cost, sustainable access to an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) can be made available to K-12 classrooms.

A number of studies have suggested that educators overestimate the prevalence of learning disabilities in the schools. In this study, we found that 339 first- and second-year education students estimated the prevalence of learning disabilities to be four times higher than the upper limits of prevalence established by experts. Given that mislabelling students as ‘learning disabled’ may have negative consequences for them, the meaning, etiology, and prevalence of students' learning problems should be addressed by training institutions.

Testing of 203, first and second year female students, of all specialties, at the Economic, Agrarian and Veterinarian-medical Faculties, with the Tracian University – Stara Zagora town, has been carried out, including 22 female students, educated in English language, on the specialty Veterinary Medicine. The purpose of this investigation is to establish the knowledge of female students regarding elements and rules of football game. Testing, Theoretical, Alternative, Graphic and Comparative analyses of percentage have been applied, for settlement of the research purpose set. We have conducted Testing of 12 questions, for collecting the quantitative information for establishment of the knowledge of female students, concerning football game elements and rules. Results and analysis show that female students lack serious knowledge concerning the football game technique and rules. The results got, give us a reason to deem that the including of female football in the educational programme, on Physical education and sport in the Higher School would have a serious educational effect and would fill in the shortage of knowledge with the female students, concerning the technique and rules of the most popular game in the world.
