This research aimed to describe the thinking process of students in solving the system of linear equations based on Polya stages. This study was a descriptive qualitative research involving six Year 10 students who are selected based on the teacher's advice and the initial mathematical ability categories, namely: (1) Students with low initial mathematics ability, (2) Students with moderate initial mathematics ability, and ( 3) students with high initial mathematics ability categories. The results indicated that students with low initial mathematical ability category were only able to solve the two-variable linear equation system problems. Students in the medium category of initial mathematics ability and students in the category of high initial mathematics ability were able to solve the problem in the form of a system of linear equations of two variables and a system of three-variable linear equations. However, students found it challenging to solve problems with complicated or unusual words or languages.

Comparison of total contents of Ba, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sn, Pb, V, Zn, Al, Ca, Fe, Mg determined in topsoil of central part of Vilnius by optical atomic emission spectrophotometry (OAES) with respective contents determined by energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), analysis of their correlation and linear relationship with and without outliers are the tasks of research. For most elements, except Ca, Sn, Ba, the contents determined by EDXRF are significantly lower and less variable. They can be predicted according to OAES-contents using linear equations. After elimination of outliers for all elements the correlation is significant at p<0.05.

Abstract The paper presents an original analytic procedure for unambiguously determining the relative position and orientation (location) of two rigid bodies based on the readings from seven linear transducers. Each transducer connects two points arbitrarily chosen on the two bodies. The sought-for rigid-body location simply results by solving linear equations. The proposed procedure is suitable for implementation in control of fully-parallel manipulators with general geometry. A numerical example shows application of the reported results to a case study.

We compared students' learning gains in authentic seventh-grade classrooms (N = 144) in 4 different interventions that incorporated a computer game that aims to teach players to solve linear equations. Significantly higher learning gains were measured in the implementations that were specifically designed to mediate the attribution of algebraic meaning to objects, actions, and rules in the game by engaging students in analogical mapping between these constructs and their algebraic counterparts and an exploration of the boundaries of this isomorphism. These findings suggest that learning disciplinary content and skills from a digital game requires learners to attribute disciplinary meaning to objects, actions, and rules in the game. Moreover, this process does not necessarily occur spontaneously and benefits from instructional mediation.

AbstractThe use of matrix algebra has expanded considerably in the last 25-30 years, in parallel with computer technology evolution. Introducing of matrix notation leads to simple and concise formulation of highly complex applications. In the first instance, a linear model can be developed or if the model is nonlinear, it can be linearized in first approximation, once or every step of a solving iterative process. In this paper, the authors will present two methods used to solve linear equations systems. First methods will be solved by manual calculation and the second method will be solved using a computer program, SISLIN, developed in Power Systems Department of the Politehnica University Timisoara. Methods are presented to students who are asked to apply the methods for case studies. Volume calculation is large, for which the authors analyze student’s concentration and attention degree.

We derive the estimates of the rate of convergence of the Tikhonov method of regularization for a constrained operator linear equation. In case that the range of the corresponding operator is closed, the estimate is of the same order as the estimates for a linear equation without constraints.
