Over the past three years, the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) and the Department of Health (DH) have worked together to develop a series of competency frameworks for dentists with special interests (DwSIs). The frameworks are intended for use by dentists and primary care trusts (PCTs) and set out competencies for the scope of treatment that can be undertaken by dentists who have developed special interests. By the end of 2007, frameworks had been published in minor oral surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics and prison dentistry.

The Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) and the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) have developed a teaching programme for primary care dentists wishing to enhance their skills in orthodontics. It follows on from the introduction of the Dentists with Special Interests (DwSI) scheme, which has provided Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) with an additional way to meet the oral health needs of the local population.

The Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) (the Faculty) has been intimately involved in the plans to introduce dentists with special interests (DwSIs) into the National Health Service (NHS).1 It was therefore appropriate that the Faculty combined with the Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) of The Royal College of Surgeons of England to host a national event on Thursday, 21st April 2005 on the topic. The aims of this study day were to provide: • An update on the development work to implement a scheme for DwSIs. • Details of the clinical competency frameworks developed as guidance for practitioners and Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) in each of the four clinical areas designated as the first in which DwSIs will work. The event was sold out with an audience of over 260 drawn from all areas of dentistry, and included clinicians from both primary and secondary care and administrators from PCTs and other NHS bodies.

This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of several aspects of oral surgery. It starts with some general principles that are applicable to all types of surgery and gradually includes details of common dental procedures. There is emphasis on suturing and dento-alveolar surgery including third molar surgery. More specialized procedures such as an apicectomy and a coronectomy are also described. The aim is to provide guidance that will help with the pre-operative assessment, as well as details of the specific oral surgery techniques. Clinicians in general dental practice and dental core trainees in hospitals often encounter patients with dento-alveolar infections as well as benign soft tissue or bone pathologies. This chapter provides the foundations of management of these conditions.

The MJDF is the new Diploma of Membership of the joint dental faculties, the Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) and Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) (FGDP(UK)). It will progressively replace the existing membership examinations of each faculty (MFDS and MFGDP(UK)) from autumn 2007. The examination is designed to assess the competencies set out in the new Department of Health foundation training (GPT) curriculum, but is relevant and available to all dentists wishing to obtain a postgraduate qualification.
