The methods to enhance contrast ratios (CRs) in scattering-type transflective liquid crystal displays (ST-TRLCDs) based on polymer-network liquid crystal (PNLC) cells are investigated. Two configurations of ST-TRLCDs are studied and are compared with the common ST-TRLCDs. According to the comparisons, CRs are effectively enhanced by assembling a linear polarizer at the suitable position to achieve better dark states in the transmissive and reflective modes of the reported ST-TRLCDs with the optimized configuration, and its main trade-off is the loss of brightness in the reflective modes. The PNLC cell, which works as an electrically switchable polarizer herein, can be a PN-90° twisted nematic LC (PN-90° TNLC) cell or a homogeneous PNLC (H-PNLC) cell. The optoelectric properties of PN-90° TNLC and those of H-PNLC cells are compared in detail, and the results determine that the ST-TRLCD with the optimized configuration using an H-PNLC cell can achieve the highest CR. Moreover, no quarter-wave plate is used in the ST-TRLCD with the optimized configuration, so a parallax problem caused by QWPs can be solved. Other methods for enhancing the CRs of the ST-TRLCDs are also discussed.

The possibility of a transmission-type X-ray linear polarizer is investigated using a thin Bragg reflector as a polarizing filter. In this device, the transmitted beam (rather than the Bragg-reflected beam) is the useful output of the device. Consequently, the position and the direction of the transmitted beam are unchanged as the energy is changed, or even when the polarization direction to be filtered out is changed. Theoretical considerations as well as preliminary transmissivity measurements are presented. The use of perfect crystals of silicon and diamond is examined. A polarization ratio, defined as I_H/I_V, higher than 105 was observed in experiments to measure the performance characteristics of the proposed X-ray polarizing reflector. The transmission-type X-ray linear polarizer is well suited for spectroscopic measurements with polarized X-rays.

AbstractIn this paper the authors discuss an alternative way for reconstructing one-photon mixed states of a partially polarized optical field. The task is to represent the probability density distribution describing these kind of states with the Stokes parameters which also characterize the effective state of polarization. These parameters can be measured by means of the degree of polarization with an experimental setup containing a rotating linear polarizer and a circular polarizer. A thought experiment is presented which assumes that the measurement is undertaken on an analyzed beam coupled with a reference beam containing photons polarized in a well-known way. The method discussed in the paper is an alternative for the most commonly used quantum tomography approach.
