Multi-modal image fusion objective is to combine complementary information obtained from multiple modalities into a single representation with increased reliability and interpretation. The images obtained from low-light visible cameras containing fine details of the scene and infrared cameras with high contrast details are the two modalities considered for fusion. In this paper, the low-light images with low target contrast are enhanced by using the phenomenon of stochastic resonance prior to fusion. Entropy is used as a measure to tune iteratively the coefficients using bistable system parameters. The combined advantage of multi scale decomposition approach and principal component analysis is utilized for the fusion of enhanced low-light visible and infrared images. Experimental results were carried out on different image datasets and analysis of the proposed methods were discussed.

Medical image fusion facilitates the retrieval of complementary information from medical images and has been employed diversely for computer-aided diagnosis of life threatening diseases. Fusion has been performed using various approaches such as Pyramidal, Multi-resolution, multi-scale etc. Each and every approach of fusion depicts only a particular feature (i.e. the information content or the structural properties of an image). Therefore, this paper presents a comparative analysis and evaluation of multi-modal medical image fusion methodologies employing wavelet as a multi-resolution approach and ridgelet as a multi-scale approach. The current work tends to highlight upon the utility of these approaches according to the requirement of features in the fused image. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based fusion algorithm has been employed in both ridgelet and wavelet domains for purpose of minimisation of redundancies. Simulations have been performed for different sets of MR and CT-scan images taken from ‘The Whole Brain Atlas'. The performance evaluation has been carried out using different parameters of image quality evaluation like: Entropy (E), Fusion Factor (FF), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) and Edge Strength (QFAB). The outcome of this analysis highlights the trade-off between the retrieval of information content and the morphological details in finally fused image in wavelet and ridgelet domains.

Image fusion is the mechanism in which at least two images are consolidated into a single image holding the imperative features from each one of the first images. Emerging images are upgraded and the image content is been enhanced in the entire context, this out coming image is much more preferable than the base images. Certain circumstances in image processing need both high dimensional and high spectral information in a solitary image, which is crucial in remote sensing. Image fusion procedure incorporates intensifying, filtering, and moulding the images for better results. Efficient and imperative approaches for image fusion are enforced here. The image fusion method comprises two discrete types of images, the visible image and the infrared image. The Single Scale Retinex (SSR) is applied to the visible image to obtain an upgraded image, simultaneously Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is been applied to infrared image to obtain an image with superior contrast and colour. Further these treated images are decomposed into a multilayer image by using Laplacian Pyramid algorithm. To end with Weighted Average fusion method aids in fusing the images to reproduce the augmented fused image.

To solve the fusion problem of visible and infrared images, based on image fusion algorithm such as region fusion, wavelet transform, spatial frequency, Laplasse Pyramid and principal component analysis, the quality evaluation index of image fusion was defined. Then, curve-let transform was used to replace the wavelet change to express the superiority of the curve. It integrated the intensity channel and the infrared image, and then transformed it to the original space to get the fused color image. Finally, two groups of images at different time intervals were used to carry out experiments, and the images obtained after fusion were compared with the images obtained by the first five algorithms, and the quality was evaluated. The experiment showed that the image fusion algorithm based on curve-let transform had good performance, and it can well integrate the information of visible and infrared images. It is concluded that the image fusion algorithm based on curve-let change is a feasible multi-sensor image fusion algorithm based on multi-resolution analysis.

Background: A multi-scale multidirectional image fusion method is proposed, which introduces the Nonsubsampled Directional Filter Bank (NSDFB) into the multi-scale edge-preserving decomposition based on the fast guided filter. Methods: The proposed method has the advantages of preserving edges and extracting directional information simultaneously. In order to get better-fused sub-bands coefficients, a Convolutional Sparse Representation (CSR) based approximation sub-bands fusion rule is introduced and a Pulse Coupled Neural Network (PCNN) based detail sub-bands fusion strategy with New Sum of Modified Laplacian (NSML) to be the external input is also presented simultaneously. Results: Experimental results have demonstrated the superiority of the proposed method over conventional methods in terms of visual effects and objective evaluations. Conclusion: In this paper, combining fast guided filter and nonsubsampled directional filter bank, a multi-scale directional edge-preserving filter image fusion method is proposed. The proposed method has the features of edge-preserving and extracting directional information.
