AbstractThe reactions of Zn(NO3)2 · 6H2O/CuCl2 · 2H2O and 1,4-bis(1-imidazolyl)benzene (bib)/1,4-bis(1-imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (biyb), carried out under hydrothermal conditions, produced two new coordination polymers [Zn(bib)(HCOO)2 · H2O] (1) and [Cu(biyb)Cl2] (2), respectively, which were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In complex 1, the ZnII centers are bridged by bib ligands to form a chain, where the adjacent chains are condensed by strong intermolecular O–H · · · O hydrogen-bonding and aromatic π-π stacking interactions to generate a 3D supramolecular structure. In 2, the CuII centers are bridged by biyb ligands to form, again, chains through C–H · · · Cl hydrogen bonds, and these adjacent chains with different orientations are joined to generate a 3D supramolecular structure.

Two new coordination polymers, namely, {[Cd3(bpt)2(bimb)2]·2(H2O)}n (1) and [Zn3(bpt)2(bimb)2]n (2) (bpt = biphenyl-3,4′,5-tricarboxylate, bimb = 1,4-bis(1-imidazol-yl)-2,5-dimethyl benzene), have been obtained under hydrothermal conditions. Their structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and further characterised by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Complex 1 exhibits a trinodal (4,4,4)-connected topology with Schläfli symbol of (4.62.83)4.(64.82). Complex 2 is also a three-dimensional structure and displays a (3,4,6)-connected topology with Schläfli symbol of (4.62)2.(42.66.85.102).(64.82). It is shown that the asymmetrically tricarboxylate can bear diverse structures regulated by metal ions. The photoluminescence behaviours of compounds 1 and 2 were also discussed.

In coordination chemistry and crystal engineering, many factors influence the construction of coordination polymers and the final frameworks depend greatly on the organic ligands used. The diverse coordination modes of N-donor ligands have been employed to assemble metal–organic frameworks. Carboxylic acid ligands can deprotonate completely or partially when bonding to metal ions and can also act as donors or acceptors of hydrogen bonds; they are thus good candidates for the construction of supramolecular architectures. We synthesized under reflux or hydrothermal conditions two new alkaline earth(II) complexes, namely poly[(1,10-phenanthroline-κ2N,N′)bis(μ-3-phenylprop-2-enoato-κ3O,O′:O)calcium(II)], [Ca(C10H7O2)2(C10H8N2)]n, (1), and poly[(1,10-phenanthroline-κ2N,N′)(μ3-3-phenylprop-2-enoato-κ4O:O,O′:O′)(μ-3-phenylprop-2-enoato-κ3O,O′:O)barium(II)], [Ba(C10H7O2)2(C10H8N2)]n, (2), and characterized them by FT–IR and UV–Vis spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, as well as by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) analysis. Complex (1) features a chain topology of type 2,4 C4, where the Ca atoms are connected by O and N atoms, forming a distorted bicapped trigonal prismatic geometry. Complex (2) displays chains of topology type 2,3,5 C4, where the Ba atom is nine-coordinated by seven O atoms of bridging/chelating carboxylate groups from two cinnamate ligands and by two N atoms from one phenanthroline ligand, forming a distorted tricapped prismatic arrangement. Weak C—H...O hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking interactions between phenanthroline ligands are responsible to the formation of a supramolecular three-dimensional network. The thermal decompositions of (1) and (2) in the temperature range 297–1173 K revealed that they both decompose in three steps and transform to the corresponding metal oxide.

Five new coordination polymers, namely [Zn(2-CMSN)(biim-4)] (1), [Co2(2-CMSN)2(biim-4)(H2O)4] (2), [Ni(2-CMSN)(biim-4)0.5(H2O)2] (3), [Cd(2-CMSN)(biim-4)0.5(H2O)2] (4), and [Cd(ADTZ)(biim-4)1.5]·5H2O (5), (2-H2CMSN = 2-carboxymethylsulfanyl nicotinic acid, H2ADTZ = 2,5-(S-acetic acid) dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, biim-4 = 1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole)) have been synthesised under hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 shows a 2D undulated sheet, which is constructed from 1D meso-helical [Zn-(biim-4)]n chains and linear [Zn-(2-CMSN)]n chains. Complexes 2–4 exhibit a similar 2D (4,4) grid network constructed from zigzag [M-(2-CMSN)]n chains and linear [M-(biim-4)]n chains (M = CoII, NiII and CdII), which possesses a ‘4+2’ type six-membered ring. Complex 5 displays a 3D architecture derived from 2D Cd-(biim-4) layers and double ADTZ linkers with diamond-type 66 topology. The effects of the central metals and S-containing dicarboxylates on the structures of the title coordination polymers have been discussed. The luminescent properties of complexes 1, 4, and 5 have been studied. Complex 5 exhibits photocatalytic activity for dye degradation under ultraviolet light and good stability towards photocatalysis.

AbstractA hybrid compound, [CuI4(bpmb)4][PWVI11WVO40] (1) (bpmb = 1,4-bis(pyrazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene), has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analyses and powder X-ray diffraction. In compound 1 crown-like [Cu4(bpmb)4]4+ macrocycles templated by Keggin-type [PWVI11WVO40]4− polyanions (abbreviated PW12) exist. Supramolecular layers are formed by intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions of discrete crown-like [Cu4(bpmb)4]4+ macrocycles and [PWVI11WVO40]4− polyanions. The electrochemical and luminescence properties of compound 1 were investigated.

The isomers 4′-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridine (1), 4′-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridine (2), 4′-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine (3), and 4′-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine (4) have been prepared and characterized. The single crystal structures of 1 and 2 were determined. The 1D-polymers [Cu2(hfacac)4(1)2]n.2nC6H4Cl2 (Hhfacac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione), [Cu(hfacac)2(2)]n.2nC6H5Me, [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n.nC6H4Cl2, [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n.nC6H5Cl, and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n.nC6H5Cl have been formed by reactions of 1, 2, 3 and 4 with [Cu(hfacac)2].H2O under conditions of crystal growth by layering and four of these coordination polymers have been formed on a preparative scale. [Cu2(hfacac)4(1)2]n.2nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(2)]n.2nC6H5Me are zig-zag chains and the different substitution position of the CF3 group in 1 and 2 does not affect this motif. Packing of the polymer chains is governed mainly by C–F...F–C contacts, and there are no inter-polymer π-stacking interactions. The conformation of the 3,2′:6′,3″-tpy unit in [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n.nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n.nC6H5Cl differs, leading to different structural motifs in the 1D-polymer backbones. In [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n.nC6H5Cl, the peripheral 3-CF3C6H4 unit is accommodated in a pocket between two {Cu(hfacac)2} units and engages in four C–Hphenyl...F–Chfacac contacts which lock the phenylpyridine unit in a near planar conformation. In [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n.nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n.nC6H5Cl, π-stacking interactions between 4′-trifluoromethylphenyl-3,2′:6′,3″-tpy domains are key packing interactions, and this contrasts with the packing of polymers incorporating 1 and 2. We use powder X-ray diffraction to demonstrate that the assemblies of the coordination polymers are reproducible, and that a switch from a 4,2′:6′,4″- to 3,2′:6′,3″-tpy metal-binding unit is accompanied by a change from dominant C–F...F–C and C–F...H–C contacts to π-stacking of arene domains between ligands 3 or 4.

Two Zn(II) coordination polymers (CPs) [Zn(L)(pphda)] (1) and [Zn(L)(ophda)]·H2O (2) were prepared by reactions of ZnSO4·7H2O based on the N-donor 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-4-yl)benzene (L) ligand and two flexible carboxylic acids isomers of 1,4-phenylenediacetic acid (H2pphda) and 1,2-phenylenediacetic acid (H2ophda) as mixed ligands, respectively. Structures of CPs 1 and 2 were characterized by elemental analysis, Infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The CP 1 is a fourfold interpenetrating 66-diamond (dia) architecture, while 2 is a 2D (4, 4) square lattice (sql) layer based on the Zn2(cis-1,2-ophda2−)2 binuclear Zn(II) subunits. The luminescent property, including luminescence lifetime and quantum yield (QY), have been investigated for CPs 1 and 2.

AbstractStarting with 1H-3-phenyl-5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole (1-Hppt), a Co(III) complex, [Co(ppt)3] (1), has been synthesized by reaction with CoF3 under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by its infrared spectrum and elemental analysis. The structure was determined by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to determine the optimized geometry and preferred conformation of the free ligand. A supramolecular network is formed via π–π stacking interactions. The conformation and geometry of the ligands correspond with the calculated results.

As a class of multifunctional materials, crystalline supramolecular complexes have attracted much attention because of their unique architectures, intriguing topologies and potential applications. In this article, a new supramolecular compound, namely catena-poly[4,4′-(buta-1,3-diene-1,4-diyl)dipyridin-1-ium [(μ4-benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylato-κ6 O 1,O 1′:O 2:O 4,O 4′:O 5)cadmium(II)]], {(C14H14N2)[Cd(C10H2O8)]} n or {(1,4-H2bpbd)[Cd(1,2,4,5-btc)]} n , has been prepared by the self-assembly of Cd(NO3)2·4H2O, benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid (1,2,4,5-H4btc) and 1,4-bis(pyridin-4-yl)buta-1,3-diene (1,4-bpbd) under hydrothermal conditions. The title compound has been structurally characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Each CdII centre is coordinated by six O atoms from four different (1,2,4,5-btc)4− tetraanions. Each CdII cation, located on a site of twofold symmetry, binds to four carboxylate groups belonging to four separate (1,2,4,5-btc)4− ligands. Each (1,2,4,5-btc)4− anion, situated on a position of \overline{1} symmetry, binds to four crystallographically equivalent CdII centres. Neighbouring CdII cations interconnect bridging (1,2,4,5-btc)4− anions to form a three-dimensional {[Cd(1,2,4,5-btc)]2−} n anionic coordination network with infinite tubular channels. The channels are visible in both the [1\overline{1}0] and the [001] direction. Such a coordination network can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected framework with the point symbol (4284)(4284). To balance the negative charge of the metal–carboxylate coordination network, the cavities of the network are occupied by protonated (1,4-H2bpbd)2+ cations that are located on sites of twofold symmetry. In the crystal, there are strong hydrogen-bonding interactions between the anionic coordination network and the (1,4-H2bpbd)2+ cations. Considering the hydrogen-bonding interactions, the structure can be further regarded as a three-dimensional (4,6)-connected supramolecular architecture with the point symbol (4264)(42687·84). The thermal stability and photoluminescence properties of the title compound have been investigated.
