Starting from trichloro(phenylethyl)silane, six differently fluorinated triaryl(phenylethyl)silanes were synthesized by salt elimination reactions and their structures were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Tris(pentafluorophenyl)(phenylethyl)silane reveals a folded structure due to intramolecular π-stacking interactions, while those with a lower degree of fluorination show either intermolecular π-stacking or no interplay between the aryl groups. A similar folded structure was observed for (4-methylphenethyl)tris(pentafluorophenyl)silane and [2-(naphth-2-yl)ethyl]tris(pentafluorophenyl)silane, both generated from the corresponding trichlorosilanes. In contrast, the inversely fluorinated [2-(pentafluorophenyl)ethyl]triphenylsilane only revealed intermolecular π-stacking interactions. Compounds with tetrafluoropyridyl substituents behave differently; with these compounds, π-stacking is only observed between the fluorinated units. All compounds were analyzed by NMR and IR spectroscopy, elemental analyses and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and found to have strong H/C/N/F···F and N···C contacts.

Four novel anthraquinone derivatives, named Dendryol A, B, C, and D, were isolated from the culture filtrate of Dendryphiella sp. Their structures were elucidated from spectral data and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The four compounds showed phytotoxic activity against barnyardgrass at more than 1 μl application of 5000 μg/ml.

Novel 3-(4-benzoyl-5-phenylfuran-2-yl)coumarin derivates were synthesised via a simple three-step reaction from salicylic aldehydes, ethyl 3-oxobutanoate and 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione. The synthesised compounds were characterised by NMR, MS and elemental analyses and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

A hetero-hexanuclear Zn(II)-La(III) coordination compound, [{(ZnL)2La}2(bdc)2](NO3)2 (H2bdc = terephthalic acid) has been synthesized with a symmetric Salamo-like bisoxime, and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV-Vis, fluorescent spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All of the Zn(II) ions are pentacoordinated by N2O2 donator atoms from the (L)2− unit and one oxygen atom from one terephthalate anion. The Zn(II) ions adopt trigonal bipyramidal geometries (τZn1 = 0.61, τZn2 = 0.56). The La(III) ions are decacoordinated in the Zn(II)-La(III) coordination compound and has a distorted bicapped square antiprism geometry. Meanwhile, the photophysical property of the Zn(II)-La(III) coordination compound was also measured and discussed.

Four new steroids, anthosterone A (5), anthosterone B (6), and the Δ4-3,6-diketo steroids 7 and 8, have been isolated from the sponge Anthoarcuata graceae. The structures of anthosterones A (5) and B (6) were deduced from their spectral data and verified via single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis on 5. The proposed structures for steroids 7 and 8 were based on spectral analysis and confirmed by synthesis of a model compound 12. Anthosterones A and B represent the first examples of a new type of ring A contraction in a steroid nucleus.

A novel metalorganic coordination polymer, namely [Co3(bpd)5.5(NCS)6(NH3)]n2H2O (1) (bpd=1,4-bis (4-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene), has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 presents 2D[3,4,-connected 3-nodal net with the point symbol (4268210)(4462)(8210). In addition, four identical 2D single nets is interlocked with each other in parallel, thus directly leading to the formation of a polycatenated layer (2D2D).
