In cognitive radio network, how to minimize the impact of secondary user on primary user’s signal plays a very important and complex role. Therefore, spectrum sensing is one of the most essential components of cognitive radio. Therefore, the effect of spectrum sensing algorithms plays a key role to the system’s performance. In this paper, we concentrate on spectrum sensing algorithms in order to find out spectrum hole or while hole for reusing it. Specifically, we will highlight the energy detector algorithm of unknown deterministic signals over fading channels. The numerical results match well with theoretical analysis. The system’s performance of energy detection in AWGN channel is acceptable in case of relatively low signal to noise ratio (SNR). However, the performance of system will be degraded remarkable over fading environments.

In the future, the wireless network environment may suffer due to the unavailability of new spectrum bands. Cognitive radio research considers the current spectrum underutilization and provides a better model for the next-generation wireless environment. Since the implementation of the cognitive radio and its policies is a bigger challenge under static spectrum allocation, i.e., current wireless networks policy, many issues are in front of us to accomplish a better cognitive radio wireless environment. One of the major challenges is a secure transmission and efficient free channel selection. In this research, the authors considered an efficient free-channel selection scheme as objective and derived an integrated approach for free-channel selection with techniques, Dynamic weighted-VIKOR.

Cognitive radio (CR) offers a novel way for effective usage of wireless spectrum by using dynamic spectrum sensing and allocation. One of the main components of CR is to find a spectrum hole for data transmission. Spectrum hole can be found by using spectrum sensing, a geolocation database, or by using a beacon signal. In this chapter, the authors describe algorithms for spectrum sensing in the presence of both additive white Gaussian and colored Gaussian noise. The algorithms include blind, non-blind, and cooperative sensing-based methods. The authors have compared the performance of various methods for IEEE 802.22 standard (which is the first standard incorporating CR).
