This study estimated the economic impact of the 2013 McGladrey Classic Golf Tournament (since renamed the RSM Classic) on Glynn County, Georgia. It was held at the Sea Island Golf Club, Seaside Course on Sea Island, Georgia in early November (7th through the 10th). This tournament is one of the stops for the PGA TOUR. The direct impacts were generated from spending from out-of-town visitors. These visitors included spectators, volunteers, title sponsor guests and the staff of the broadcast partner. In order to estimate the total amount of spending related to this event, the research team administered a survey to both volunteers online, prior to the event, and to spectators in person at the event. Additional expenditure data for the Golf Channel staff and McGladrey guests was provided by the Davis Love Foundation, host of this tournament.

The News-Sentinel Open presented by Pilot is an event on the Web.com Tour. The Web.com Tour began in 1990 with the name of the Ben Hogan Tour and has transitioned through several title sponsors, taking its current name in June 2012. The tour is the developmental tour for the PGA Tour and the primary means for professional golfers to earn playing privileges on the PGA Tour. Tournaments are 72-hole stroke play events featuring between 144 and 156 golfers. This specific tournament is staged in Knoxville, Tennessee, and is one of only three original tour stops from the inaugural season in 1990. In an effort to measure economic impact in the greater Knoxville area resulting from the tournament weekend, the News-Sentinel Open has commissioned an economic impact study. This case study challenges students to analyze data collected from the economic impact study commissioned by the tour organizers. By engaging with this case study, and its accompanying data and results, students will gain insight into best practices of planning, conducting, and analyzing an ethical economic impact study.

Since 1973, 535 specific claims valued at more than $6 billion have been settled between the Government of Canada and First Nations governments for outstanding treaty obligations. Critics of specific land claims point to the absence of statistical evidence that shows a positive impact on First Nations economies and characterize specific claims as a multi-billion-dollar liability for Canadian taxpayers. This research shows that the economic benefits of specific claims are being lost to First Nations economies through high rates of economic leakage, especially in cases in which large proportions of the settlement funds are disbursed on a per capita basis. Collaborating with the Little Red River Cree Nation (LRRCN) in Alberta (a recent recipient of a $239 million settlement), we use household expenditure data, band-owned businesses’ financial statements, and band administration audit reports to estimate their rate of economic leakage and the economic impact of their specific claims settlement. Results indicate that the economic leakage rate for the LRRCN is 83.5 percent. Using household expenditure data and input–output models, we estimate the economic impact of the LRRCN settlement. Assuming a 100 percent per capita disbursal of the funds, the settlement would contribute $275–$339 million in provincial output, $172–$212 million in gross domestic product, and $110–$127 billion in labour income, and it would create 2,393–2,714 full-time jobs. The results of this research may be of value to First Nations leaders in making decisions concerning the distribution and investment of specific claims settlements in the future.

The purpose of the study was to estimate the economic impact on Brazos County, Texas, of a proposed weekend Wine and Jazz Festival to be produced by Messina Hof Winery. An economic impact analysis was performed using IMPLAN PRO software. The 1998 value of the US dollar and average weekend festival visitor expenditure data from Messina Hof Winery were used as inputs into the model. The results indicated that this single event would generate $892,981 in total sales output, $324,942 in personal income and the equivalent of 21.8 jobs. The conclusion was that the weekend Wine and Jazz Festival proposed by Messina Hof Winery would have a significant positive economic impact on Brazos County.
