In international literature, small cities are often presented as the weak link within the urban system due to their lower growth rate and the threat of shrinking in the context of metropolisation. However their population dynamics are highly variable between places, determined by a number of factors, such as the national and regional demographic trends or the local economic base. This article proposes a regional case study on Western France, examining their demographic changes from 1990 to 2015. Three possible factors based on underlying assumptions are tested: 1. the proximity of larger cities as a possible revitalisation factor due to urban sprawl; 2. The vicinity of the coast attributed to the growing role of residential attractiveness; 3. In a more original way, the distance to a railway station as a potential factor, boosted by the recent passenger railway service strengthening. The results are counter-intuitive and the assumptions only partially validated, which invites us to reassess the relevance of the analysis of urban dynamics by size class.

In rural Oklahoma, the role of the superintendent is often vastly different than that of superintendents in large cities. The superintendent is the leader of the school district, which is typically the community’s largest employer. There are a few examples of superintendents who embrace this sometimes overwhelming responsibility and who are often seen as pillars of ethics, leadership and morality in the community. Dale Carter is one example of this type of superintendent. Mr. Carter has been employed by Kenawee Public Schools since 1969. During his tenure he has been a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent. This case study will examine how Carter has considered community values when making decisions and how the integration of those values along with his personal and professional values have allowed him to lead a rural school district.

Traditionally, medium-sized cities have been compact urban centres, which have also emerged as satellite nuclei within metropolitan areas of larger cities. However, urban dispersion models have led to growth in population and the increasing urbanisation of large cities’ peripheral areas. This article will analyse medium-sized cities in Spain, as well as their urban areas within the national urban network. Medium-sized cities will be defined herein, and their urban areas of influence will also be established. The increase and growth in area and population of the so-called medium-sized cities draws a new map of urban relationships. Empirical analysis will resort to a nuclear, demographic source, the population of urban areas. Source data will be analysed both statistically and cartographically. Finally, a spatial analysis of Spain’s urban network will be presented as the main method used to obtain results, with a characterisation of Spain’s urban system and the role of cities in such system being displayed. There is a trend which aims at re-balancing the permanent configuration of the country’s urban network. The article concludes with a typology of medium-sized cities regarding their relative position in the territory. This research contributes to the current scientific debate on the dynamics of urbanisation in the environment of medium-sized cities.

Abstract This research emerges from the critique of the Programa Minha Casa Minha Vida (PMCMV) considering the availability of vacant properties in urban centers. The work begins with theoretical and empirical studies that propose a reflection, through the different methodological approaches, to carry out the conversion of abandoned properties in the central areas of large cities. It also questions the role of architecture professionals and students in providing technical assistance to popular movements. The Ocupação Vito Giannotti (OVG), located in the Santo Cristo neighborhood, in the port area of the city of Rio de Janeiro, was defined as a case study aiming to demonstrate the importance of the participatory project to achieve a built environment of quality. This experience demonstrates the need to train architects with the capacity to dialogue and mediate, instead of imposing the architectural project.
