The Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Phibalura flavirostris, is a rare Neotropical bird. Its geographic distribution in Brazil is limited to the country’s south and south-east regions and a small area in the center of the state of Goiás. However, an adult individual was recorded in a fragment of Cerrado in the municipality of Campo Grande, in central Mato Grosso do Sul, indicating an expansion in the distribution of the species in Brazil.

The Greater Bonneted Bat, Eumops perotis (Schinz, 1821), is widely distributed in Brazil, but valid records of its occurrence in Mato Grosso do Sul, Central-West Region, are still scarce and limited to the Pantanal portion of the state. Here, we report the first record of E. perotis from the Cerrado portion of Mato Grosso do Sul, based on specimens collected in an urban forest remnant in the municipality of Campo Grande. These specimens add to the records of E. perotis in the Cerrado of the Central-West and fill gaps in the distribution of this species.

Dilaridae is a small family of Neuroptera that includes fewer than 80 described species of which 10 are known from Brazil in the states of Amazonas, Rondônia, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina. This note includes the first record of the family for the state of Pernambuco, with the report of Nallachius dicolor Adams, 1970 in the city of Jatobá (northeastern Brazil).

Taeniophallus brevirostris is a dipsadid snake widely distributed in Amazon. Here we report a new Brazilian state record for the species, improving our knowledge of its geographic distribution. On 15 May of 2008, one female specimen was collected at Serra do Santo Expedito, Aripuanã municipality, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. This is the first record of this species for the state of Mato Grosso and extends its distribution ca. 300 kilometers from the nearest localities presented in literature.

Currently, Proceratophrys concavitympanum is only known in the states of Rondônia, Tocantins and Mato Grosso, south of the Amazon. In this study, we will present an extension of the geographic distribution in the Brazilian Amazonia and the first record of the species in the state of Pará. The new record was obtained at Riozinho do Anfrísio Extractive Reserve, in the municipality of Altamira, state of Pará, Brazil.

Natural occurrence of an entomopathogenic fungus was reported on Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in an area planted with conventional soybeans located in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The caterpillar was collected in the field and taken to the microbiology laboratory of the Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados (UFGD) where it remained in a moist chamber for approximately 7 days. Later, the fungus was isolated on culture medium (PDA) for identification of the entomopathogenic species. The fungus was identified as Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin (Hyphomycetes: Moniliales) and this represents the first record of parasitism of this species on the soybean caterpillar in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Nymphoides grayana (Menyanthaceae) is a macrophyte, and its occurrence is known in Brazil only for the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. In this paper, a new record of N. grayana is presented for the state of Tocantins, representing the first record of Menyanthaceae for the state and expanding the occurrence of the species for the North Region of Brazil.

Two male individuals of Mimon crenulatum were captured in the Mario Viana Municipal Park, at Nova Xavantina, eastern Mato Grosso, Brazil. This record expands the species’ distribution in West-Central Brazil, and represents the first record for the Cerrado of Mato Grosso. The specimens’ morphometric data are presented and compared with those of specimens found in other biomes. Two predictive geographic distribution models were generated, indicating the expansion of the potential distribution of the species.

The first record of the wasp Scolia rufiventris Fabricius, 1804 is reported for the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and the Brazilian Pantanal in the Abobral region, in an area with predominance of flooded fields and Cambarazal dominance. The registration of the species contributes to the knowledge of the diversity of insects in the Pantanal, mainly in view of the last events of devastation by large-scale fires.
