One embodiment of YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO)-coated conductors consists of YBCO film grown using a metal-organic deposition (MOD) process on a buffer layer stack deposited on a Ni-W substrate. A possible alternative is to replace the multilayer buffer stack with a single layer of LaMnO3 (LMO) grown by MOD. A suitable temperature (T) – oxygen partial pressure (PO2) process-window to grow LMO films via MOD on Ni substrates has been identified. Untextured LMO was grown on pure Ni. However, we have not been able to grow phase-pure LMO films on either bare or Y2O3-coated, biaxially textured Ni-5W (at.%) due to the incongruent, overlapping requirements of having the PO2 low enough to not oxidize the Ni-5W substrate but high enough to convert the metal-organic precursors to LMO and the relatively high temperatures needed to form an epitaxial film in an MOD process. The main problem is that tungsten from the substrate reacts with cations in the overlying film forming tungstates when the films are processed in the T-PO2 window.

We report on recent progress towards the continuous deposition of YBCO Coated Conductors (CC) by thermal co-evaporation. This is an attractive vacuum technique thanks to the simplicity, low cost and intrinsic uniformity over large areas. Recently, we published the in situ preparation route of 1 μm thick superconducting YBCO films deposited onto CeO2 buffered Ni biaxially textured tapes using a reel-to-reel system; end-to-end critical current densities Jc's at 77 K and self-field, measured by transport measurements are in the 1-2 MA/cm2 range for 1 m. long samples, with zero-resistance Tc= 87 K and transition widths DTc<3 K. In spite of the very good CC’s performances reported by a number of laboratories all over the world, several steps must be optimized in order to limit the CC production costs, in particular concerning the complexity of the CC architecture and the choice and optimization of the YBCO deposition technique. We specifically address the following critical points regarding: 1) the in situ oxidation of the YBCO layer using a novel supersonic nozzle, 2) the deposition by thermal or e-beam evaporation of thick crack-free CeO2 buffer layers and 3) the scaling-up of the deposition process using a new multichamber system.

Epitaxial films of rare-earth (RE = La, Ce, Eu, and Gd) tantalates, RE3TaO7 with pyrochlore structures were grown on biaxially textured nickel-3 at.% tungsten (Ni-W) substrates using chemical solution deposition (CSD) process. Precursor solution of 0.3∼0.4 M concentration of total cations were spin coated on to short samples of Ni-W substrates and the films were crystallized at 1050∼1100 °C in a gas mixture of Ar- 4% H2 for 15 to 60 min. X-ray studies show that the films of pyrochlore RE tantalate films are highly textured with cube-on-cube epitaxy. Improved texture was observed in case of lanthanum tantalate (La3TaO7) film grown on Ni-W substrates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) investigations of RE3TaO7 films reveal a fairly dense and smooth microstructure without cracks and porosity. The rare-earth tantalate layers may be potentially used as buffer layers for YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) coated conductors.
