Research objective. The study aimed to evaluate cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) capabilities in diagnostics of cystic masses of the jaw.Methods. Over a period of 2015–2016 32 patients age 6 to 67 underwent both panoramic tomography and CBCT (using panoramic tomographic scanner STRATO 2000 and cone-beam computed tomographic scanner i-Cat respectively). 47% (n = 15) of the participants were women, 53% (n = 17) – men. Radiation exposure for a single procedure amounts to 0,05 mSv for panoramic tomography, 0,07 mSv for CBCT (FOV =13 cm), 0,06 mSv for CBCT (FOV =8 cm).Results. Comparative analysis of obtained results demonstrates that CBCT showed 54% (n = 27) more cystic masses of the jaws than panoramic radiography could. CBCT additionally showed the following pathologies: granulomas smaller than4 mm diameter – 85% (n = 23), 83% (n = 23) of said granulomas were found on maxilla, radicular cysts of maxilla – 11% (n = 3), incisive canal cyst – 4% (n = 1). Additionally panoramic tomography analysis misdiagnosed 5 granulomas (80% (n = 4) on mandibular premolar and molar areas) that were not found during CBCT analysis.Conclusion. The low effective dose and high informativity of CBCT enables the method to be used instead of intraoral radiography, panoramic tomography and MSCT as a screening procedure in diagnostics of dento-facial system pathologies, including cystic masses of the jaw.

Introduction: Buccal shelf bone screws have become increasingly popular as a preferred method of skeletal anchorage in the mandibular arch. Anatomic variations and clinical experience suggest that width and slope of the bone at buccal shelf vary in different population groups, with some individual variations. Aims and Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate angulation of the bone screw of mandibular buccal shelf area, total bone width, thickness of the cortical bone, and proximity to neurovascular structures. Materials and Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography scans were used to obtain measurements of the buccal shelf region of 35 patients (18 females, 17 males; mean age, 23.6 years). Measurements were taken at three locations (L1, L2, and L3) and total bone width was measured at two levels from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ, H1 and H2). Bone screws were virtually placed and their proximity evaluated from digitally traced inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle. Results: Permissible angulation for placement of buccal shelf bone screw considering the safety distance from the root and avoiding excessive buccal projection to minimize cheek irritation was found to be 74.48 (SD ± 4.26). Total bone width was maximum at the distobuccal cusp of mandibular second molar (L3H2; 6.40 ± 1.35) when measured at the level of 8 mm from the CEJ. Bone screws were well within the safety range from causing any iatrogenic damage to the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle at all the three aforementioned locations. Conclusion: Thus, area buccal to the mandibular second molar region seems to be the most favorable site for placement of buccal shelf bone screws in Indian patients.

Objective: This study sought to assess the frequency and severity of second molar external root resorption (ERR) due to the adjacent third molar and its correlation with the position of third molar and other related factors using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated 320 second molars and their adjacent impacted third molars on CBCT scans of patients over 16 years, retrieved from the archives of Azad University Radiology Department. Presence/absence of second molar ERR, its location and severity (if present), and position of adjacent third molar were determined on CBCT scans, and recorded in a checklist. Data were analyzed using a logistic regression model. Results: The frequency of second molar ERR was 33.4% in the mandible and 14% in the maxilla. The severity of ERR was significantly correlated with the involved jaw (P=0.001) but had no correlation with age, gender, or depth of impaction of adjacent third molar (P>0.05). The mesioangular and horizontal positions of impacted third molars had a significant correlation with the frequency of second molar ERR (P<0.006). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, ERR occurring in second molars adjacent to third molars is common, especially in the mandible. Mesially inclined third molars have a greater potential of being associated with ERR in second molars.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the root and canal morphology of the mandibular first and second permanent molars in a Turkish population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: CBCT images of mandibular first (n = 966) and second molar (n = 1165) teeth from 850 Turkish patients were evaluated. The root canal configurations were classified according to the method of Vertucci. The data were analyzed by Pearson's Chi-square test. Results: The majority of mandibular molars were two rooted with three canals; however, three roots were identified in 0.05% of the first molars and 0.01% of the second molars, and 100% of the additional root canals were of type I configuration. Mesial roots had more complex canal systems with more than one canal, whereas most distal roots had a type I configuration. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that CBCT scanning provides supplemental information about the root canal configurations of mandibular molars in a Turkish population. This study may help clinicians in the root canal treatment of mandibular molars.

Objectives: Cone-Beam Computed Tomography is an alternative imaging technique which has been recently introduced in the field of Oral &amp; Maxillofacial Radiology. It has rapidly gained great popularity among clinicians due to its ability to detect lesions and defects of the orofacial region and provide three-dimensional information about them. In the field of Endodontics, CBCT can be a useful tool to reveal tooth morphology irregularities, additional root canals and vertical root fractures. The objective of this study is to evaluate the root and root canal morphology of the maxillary permanent molars in Greek population using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.Materials and Methods:273 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were examined. The number of roots and root canals of the first and second maxillary molars were evaluated. Root canal configuration was classified according to Weine’s classification by two independent examiners and statistical analysis was performed.Results:A total of 812 molars (410 first and 402 second ones) were evaluated. The vast majority of both first and second molars had three roots (89.26% and 85.07%, respectively). Most first molars had four canals, while most second molars had three. In the mesiobuccal roots, one foramen was recorded in 80.91% of all teeth. Other rare morphologic variations were also found, such as fusion of a maxillary second molar with a supernumerary tooth.Conclusion:Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that more attention should be given to the detection of additional canals during root canal treatment in maxillary permanent molars. Towards this effort, CBCT can provide the clinician with supplemental information about the different root canal configurations for successful Root Canal Treatment.
