Nutritional condition embodies environmental conditions experienced by animals with survival and reproductive consequences. Body fat is often associated with ungulate fecundity; however, other nutritional currencies may limit fecundity. Using data from 129 moose (Alces alces (Linnaeus, 1758)) monitored over 429 moose-years, we examined the limiting role of multiple nutritional currencies on pregnancy rates while concurrently assessing the influence of age and prior reproduction. Females tended to be pregnant in successive years, suggesting differences in individual or habitat quality. However, probability of pregnancy declined with survival of calves from prior litters, indicating a reproductive cost to rearing offspring. Pregnancy was positively associated with serum iron (Fe), body fat, body mass, and serum protein. The best model predicting pregnancy included serum Fe, body fat, and age class, with serum Fe being the strongest single predictor. Moose with Fe concentrations considered deficient in cattle (Bos taurus Linnaeus, 1758) had pregnancy rates of 33%–35%, whereas 89%–91% of individuals with sufficient Fe were pregnant. We subsequently evaluated hypotheses concerning factors potentially limiting Fe concentrations, including Fe-deficient diet, chronic infection, parasitism, and malnutrition. The best supported hypothesis was energy and protein malnutrition constrained Fe stores. We conclude that subclinical anemia due to nutritional constraints can limit or indicate limits in moose fecundity.

Advances in cancer treatment, particularly chemotherapeutics, are expected to lead to significant improvements in survival rates. While cancer incidence and death rates are decreasing, quality of life after cancer may be reduced due to early functional failure of the gonads and, consequently, infertility, resulting from either the disease itself or its treatment. This chapter introduces clinicians to the new field of oncofertility and the ethical issues it raises. It will consider the situation of young cancer patients facing reproductive consequences globally, the retrieval of gametes or gonadal tissue from minors, and the use of these tissues long term. The field of oncofertility is new, but ethical considerations regarding reproductive interventions are old. Understanding how we approach these issues on a personal level and from the public’s perspective will be assessed in this chapter.

Abstract In a migratory population of Black Redstarts (Phoenicurus ochruros) in central Europe, males were territorial and sang in autumn between the end of molt in early September and the abandonment of territories in October. Participants in autumn singing were adult males past their first potential breeding season; subadults rarely defended territories in autumn. Prior to the autumn singing period, unmated males and males after their first breeding season often dispersed to new locations within the study site. Pair associations with experienced female breeders still present on the breeding ground were preformed. Low winter mortality, site dominance, and fidelity to autumn territories allowed the reformation of 59% of autumnal pair bonds in the following spring. The mating pattern was assortative by age because the initiation of territory acquisition and pair formation was temporally segregated by more than six months between subadult and adult breeders. Males benefitted from mating with experienced females because they started breeding earlier and initiated more breeding attempts per season. Autumnal singing and territoriality, a phenomenon that has not attracted much attention, may play a key role in the understanding of age-related reproductive asymmetries in Black Redstarts. Age-related reproductive performance may be the underlying cause for the evolution of delayed plumage maturation in this species.
