The widespread of Web services in the ubiquitous computing era and the impossibility to predict a priori all possible user needs generates the necessity for on-demand service composition. Natural language is one of the the easiest ways for a user to express what he expects regarding a service. Two main problems need to be solved in order to create a composite service to satisfy the user: a)retrieval of relevant services and b) orchestration/composition of the selected services in order to fulfill the user request. We solve the first problem by using semantic concepts associated with the services and we define a conceptual distance to measure the similarity between the user request and a service configuration. Retrieved services are composed, based on aspect oriented templates called Aspects of Assembly. We have tested our application in an environment for pervasive computing called Ubiquarium, where our system composes a service according to the user request described by a sentence. The implementation is based on the WComp middleware that enables us to use regular Web services but also Web services for devices.

Abstract. Land cover change (LCC) detection is widely used in many social-benefit areas, such as land cover updating, sustainable development and geographical situation monitoring. With the development of Web Services and cloud computing, a number of remote sensed algorithms and models have been published as web services. An on-demand service is urgent to be generated by compositing a sequence of atomic services, according to different situations. Context information plays an important role in automatic service composition. Traditional context information models mainly focus on service only, and ignore the relationships among users and services. To address this problem, we introduce the service context and user context into the context information. OWL-SC and OWL-UC are then proposed by extending the traditional service description model (i.e., OWL-S). Finally, a context-aware on-demand service model for LCC detection is built to realize service composition and optimization.

Service composition provides value-adding services through composing basic Web services, which may be provided by various organizations. Cloud computing presents an efficient managerial, on-demand, and scalable way to integrate computational resources (hardware, platform, and software). However, existing Cloud architecture lacks the layer of middleware to enable dynamic service composition. To enable and accelerate on-demand service composition, the authors explore the paradigm of dynamic service composition in the Cloud for Pervasive Service Computing environments and propose a Cloud-based Middleware for Dynamic Service Composition (CM4SC). In this approach, the authors introduce the CM4SC ‘Composition as a Service’ middleware layer into conventional Cloud architecture to allow automatic composition planning, service discovery and service composition. The authors implement the CM4SC middleware prototype utilizing Windows Azure Cloud platform. The prototype demonstrates the feasibility of CM4SC for accelerating dynamic service composition and that the CM4SC middleware-accelerated Cloud architecture offers a novel way for realizing dynamic service composition.

With the advent of Web Services, the software industry is evolving from developing specific functionality from scratch to reusing functionalities off the shelf. However, a major limitation of Web Services is that manual efforts are required in the functionality reuse. Thus, Service Network is proposed as an infrastructure that allows users to discover, deploy, synthesize and compose Web Services automatically. Nevertheless, the construction of Service Network suffers from the lack of domain ontologies. Based on OpenCyc, this paper presents an approach for the automatic construction of Service Network. In particular, the authors concentrate on two fundamental concepts in Service Network, including the service semantics and the association semantics. With the semantic support of OpenCyc, the service semantics is generated by augmenting the semantics of services, and the association semantics is acquired by identifying the association relations among services. And then a case study of service composition is presented to demonstrate how Service Network facilitates the functionality reuse. It is suggested that Service Network not only can effectively generate a composite service, but also can reduce the complexity of service composition.

Abstract—Service composition is gaining popularity because a composite service can perform functions that an individual service cannot. There are multiple web services available on the web for different tasks. The semantic web is an advanced form of the current web in which all contents have well-defined meanings due to nature, allowing machines to process web contents automatically. A web service composition is a collection of web services that collaborate to achieve a common goal. They reveal the established methods for web service composition in both syntactic and semantic environments. In this study Initially, we identify the existing techniques used for the composition. We classified these approaches according to the processing of the service descriptions, which can be syntactic or semantic-based service processes. We have reviewed more than 14 articles in this domain and concluded the merits of the methodologies applied for the implementation of web service composition.

It is a big challenge to realize the dynamic change of the network environment and users demands. A dynamic application customization and extensible service composition model is proposed in this paper. In order to guarantee the rationality of the service composition, the composition model of on-demand service that based on Petri net is proposed. Then the model is analyzed to validate whether the service composition can achieve the desired target. Finally, the result shows that the model can guarantee the correctness of extensible service, validate the rationality and effectiveness of the method.
