Patterns in the temporal composition, abundance and diversity of the phytoplankton community of the Paraná river prior to and after the initial filling phase of the Yacyretá reservoir are analyzed. The study site is located 220 km downstream from the Yacyretá reservoir and 30 km downstream from the confluence with the Paraguay river. Because both rivers remain separate and unmixed at the study site, we compared the possible effects of the impoundment on both river banks (left and right banks) in hydrological periods with similar duration and magnitude of the low and high water phases. Physical and chemical conditions measured on the right bank (water from the Paraguay river) were similar at both periods (pre and post-impoundment) whereas conductivity, pH and orthophosphate concentration increased on the left bank (water from the High Paraná river and Yacyretá reservoir) after the impoundment. Changes in phytoplankton density and diversity were observed only in samples collected from water flowing from the reservoir (left bank). The density of Chlorophyceae (Chloromonas acidophila, Chlamydomonas leptobasis, Choricystis minor, Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus ecornis, Monoraphidium minutum, M. contortum and M. pusillum) and Cryptophyceae (Rhodomonas minuta, Cryptomonas marssonii and C. ovata) increased while Cyanophyceae (Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, Raphidiopsis mediterranea and Planktolyngbya subtilis) and Bacillariophyceae (Aulacoseira granulata and its bioforms) decreased compared to previous studies conducted on the left bank of the Paraná river. Phytoplankton collected from the right bank of the river did not differ in pre and post- impoundment samples because they originate from the Paraguay river, which remains relatively unaffected by human activities.

The "tucunaré", Cichla piquiti, an exotic Amazonian fish has become established along the left bank of the Paraguay River in the Pantanal. It was introduced by escaping from culture ponds in the Upper Piquiri River and spread downstream, along the lateral flooded areas of that river, continuing through the clear waters of the left bank of the Paraguay River and reaching south as far as the Paraguai Mirim and Negrinho rivers. Adult spawners have been found in the region, meaning that it is a self-sustained population. Reproduction occurs in the period of low waters. They were found feeding on fishes of lentic environments belonging to the families Characidae, Cichlidae and Loricariidae. Until the end of 2004, its distribution was restricted to the left bank of the Paraguay River, but in March 2005, some specimens were found on the right bank, raising a question for the future: what will be the distribution area of the tucunaré in the Pantanal? Information about its dispersion is increasing: it is known to be in the Tuiuiú Lake, Pantanal National Park and in the Bolivian Pantanal, all of them on the right bank of the Paraguay River. The hypothesis that the "tucunaré" could not cross turbid waters, such as in the Paraguay River, was refuted by these recent findings. Possibly, the tucunaré's capacity to lay more than one batch of eggs in a reproductive period, as well as its care of eggs and young, lead them to establish themselves successfully in new environments, as has been observed in the Pantanal and other localities.

Howler monkeys (Alouatta Lacèpéde, 1799) are folivores-frugivores with flexible diets depending on conditions. Here, we compare the diets of Alouatta caraya (Humboldt, 1812) in two riparian forests (island and mainland), in Porto Rico region, Upper Paraná River, Southern Brazil. Howlers were followed from October 2004 to September 2005 in the riparian forest of a 1,050 ha island and in the continuous riparian forest on the mainland (left bank of the river). The "scan sampling" method with instantaneous samples every 15 minutes was used. Besides vines, diet breadth was similar: 17 species consumed on the island versus 16 species on the mainland. Both consumed leaves followed by fruits more than any other food type (leaves: island - 65%, mainland - 49%, fruits: island - 24%, mainland - 46%). Even though the plant Cecropia pachystachya Trécul is less abundant in the mainland it was the item most consumed in both locations all year long, which suggests its importance for the howlers. Diet also varied both seasonally and between the island and mainland, apparently following changes in local abundance of each item and due to plant phenologies.

The fluvial dynamics corresponds to the natural changes of river channels that can influence the water energy, type and morphology of the gutter, geological structure and soil types. In this context, the type of soil present on the banks of the rivers stands out, which due to their morphological, physical and chemical characteristics, will offer greater or less resistance to marginal erosive processes. Whit this study, we aim to verify the contribution of soil morphological, physical and chemical attributes in the natural dynamics of the right bank of the Paraguay River. The studied area is located in the Pantanal Matogrossense, sub-region of Cáceres, and comprises the right bank of the Paraguay River, in the region of Baia da Campina, approximately 10 km away from the municipality of Cáceres, Mato Grosso, Brazil. We carry out morphological, granulometric and chemical description of the soil. The data were tabulated in a spreadsheet, being subsequently analyzed and discussed. The vegetation occurring in the study area is of the seasonal / cerrado and alluvial forests type, with the presence of low and semi-shrub vegetation. We classified the soil profile in the section studied as Fluvic Tb Endoeutrophic Neosol, presenting medium texture and, in general, high levels of sand and low levels of clay. The values referring to the effective cation exchange capacity (CTC) obtained in this study, were classified from low to very good, a characteristic that allows the existence of low and semi-shrubby vegetation, which contributes to the resistance to erosive processes, even that the soil has a low presenting resistance physical structure.

The damming of a river causes dangerous consequences on structure of the environment downstream of the dam, modifying the sediment composition, which impose major adjustments in longitudinal distribution of benthic community. The construction of Engenheiro Sérgio Motta Dam in the Upper Paraná River has caused impacts on the aquatic communities, which are not yet fully known. This work aimed to provide more information about the effects of this impoundment on the structure of Chironomidae larvae assemblage. The analysis of data of physical and chemical variables in relation to biological data of 8 longitudinal sections in the Upper Paraná River showed that composition of Chironomidae larvae of stations near Engenheiro Sérgio Motta Dam differed of the other stations (farther of the Dam). The predominance of coarse sediments at stations upstream and finer sediments further downstream affected the choice of habitat by different morphotypes of Chironomidae and it caused a change in the structure of this assemblage in the longitudinal stretch.

The Corumbá Reservoir is located in Corumbá River, a tributary to the right bank of Paranaíba River, upper Paraná River basin. Fish were collected monthly, from March 1996 to February 2000, in 17 sampling stations along Corumbá Reservoir and its influence area, using gill nets, casting nets, electrofishing and long lines. Considering the entire period, 119 fish species were colleted, which belong to seven Orders, 26 Families, and 78 Genera. Among them, five species are considered endemic to Corumbá River basin, and 17 are probably new to the science.

O rio Paraná, em seu trecho natural, é caracterizado por canais secundários de diferentes ordens de tamanho, separando diversas ilhas e barras fluviais. As barras fluviais apresentam grande porte e suas formas mudam constantemente conforme a magnitude do fluxo. Este estudo apresenta a caracterização morfológica de uma barra de soldamento e suas adjacências, situadas junto à ilha Santa Rosa, no alto rio Paraná. Para tanto, a morfologia da barra foi comparada em dois momentos hidrológicos distintos através de levantamentos com aparelho de batimetria. Os resultados evidenciam que a morfologia da barra estudada está diretamente influenciada pelas oscilações da vazão do rio Paraná. No período de águas altas há maior retrabalhamento da forma, e preservação parcial em período de águas médias. A análise da distribuição das formas adjacentes à barra de soldamento permitiu constatar que o canal principal possui mais energia, já que apresenta formas íngremes e profundas, e o canal secundário indica menor energia de fluxo por apresentar formas mais suaves.AbstractThe Paraná River, in its natural reach is characterized by secondary channels of different size orders, which separates several islands and bars. Fluvial bars are large and their forms change constantly due to the flow. This study presents the morphological characterization of an attachment bar and its adjacencies, located nearby the island Santa Rosa, in the upper Paraná River. Therefore, the morphology of the bar was compared in two distinct hydrological moments through surveys with bathymetry equipment. The results indication that the morphology of the studied bar is directly influenced by fluctuations in the flow of the Paraná River. In the period of high water level there is more reworking of the forms and partial preservation in average water level. The analysis of the distribution of forms adjacent to the attachment bar allowed establishing that the main channel is more energetic, as it presents abrupt and deep forms and the secondary channel indicates lower energy flow by presenting smoother forms.Keywords:Paraná River, Fluvial Geomorphology, Morphology, Attachment Bar

Pimelodus mysteriosus Azpelicueta 1998, previously known only from the lower Paraná and Paraguay River basins, has been also recorded in the upper Paraná River floodplain. The only congeners occurring in syntopy with P. mysteriosus in the upper Paraná River basin are P. maculatus and P. ornatus. New diagnostic characters between P. mysteriosus and P. maculatus are provided.

This paper intend to contribute on understanding of small part of tropical/subtropical large river fluvial geomorphology: the high Paraná river flood system. The studied area is inserted in Baía River Compartment, characterized of large alluvial plain, in the right margin of high Paraná River, and the greater archipelagoes subdividing the channel in branches with different importance. The intensity of erosive process on the Paraná River banks were studied in four different kinds of channel by 29 points, during a hydrodynamic cycle. The obtained data was still treated with cluster analysis and the correlation through the linear and exponential regression among variables. Results evidenced that the flow velocity and mechanical composition of banks were the main variables of bank erosion rates, and that the another variables, like roots and vegetation, do not had any influence to control the bank erosion. Erosion, accretion and by pass are processes controlled by the Paraná river regime, by shifting of the talweg position and then also controlled by intensity, duration and recurrence of flood.

Omalonyx unguis was previously known to occur in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. We report the first conclusive record of occurrence of this species in Brazil, based on specimens collected in three localities in the Paraguay River sub-basin (Mato Grosso do Sul state – Campo Grande and Miranda; Mato Grosso state – Poconé), and in the Brazilian margin of the Paraná River (Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná State). The species was identified by comparative morphology of the reproductive system, and a map that synthesizes the literature and reports new records is presented.

Abstract: Aim We record new occurrences of the invasive species Ceratium furcoides in reservoirs and their affluents in the Paraná River basin, State of Goiás (GO), central-western Brazil, and in some localities in the São Francisco River basin, northeastern region. Methods Qualitative and quantitative phytoplankton samples were collected from Corumbá Reservoir and Cascatinha Falls, Caldas Novas, GO, and João Leite Reservoir, Goiânia, GO, both in the Paraná River basin, and samples from the São Franscisco River basin. Specimens of C. furcoides were observed with optical, epifluorescence and scanning electron microscopy. Results The individuals of C. furcoides from these environments agreed morphologically with populations in other reservoirs in Brazil and other locations, especially concerning the tabulation and the shape of the fourth apical plate. These environments ranged from oligotrophic to eutrophic conditions. Physical and chemical variables of these waterbodies, compared to other environments where this species was found, demonstrate that C. furcoides is a highly eurytopic species. The dispersal pattern of C. furcoides seems to be more complex than upstream-downstream regulation, since the species occurs in high-altitude environments and systems upstream from previously recorded locations. Conclusion An analysis based on the areas of occurrence and the chronology of the records demonstrated that C. furcoides has spread toward northern Brazil. Studies of the relationships among populations recorded in other parts of Brazil and South America are required in order to develop accurate models of dispersal for this invasive species, and will facilitate the development of management policies for aquatic systems in Brazil.
