Abstract Hippoboscid flies are potential ectoparasites of several avian orders, including birds of prey, a group formed by the orders Falconiformes, Strigiformes, Cathartiformes and Accipitriformes. In this study, we evaluated 155 birds of prey that were brought to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil, between the years 2016 and 2019. Two species of hippoboscid flies (Ornithoctona erythrocephala and Icosta americana) were found in five species of birds of prey (Megascops choliba, Asio stygius, Athene cunicularia, Asio clamator and Caracara plancus). The average intensity found was 1.4 hippoboscids/bird and Megascops choliba (tropical screech-owl) was the most parasitized bird. This is the first record of parasitism of Asio stygius (stygian owl) by Ornithoctona erythrocephala in Brazil and of Athene cunicularia (burrowing owl) and Asio clamator (striped owl) by Icosta americana. Ornithoctona erythrocephala is recorded here for the first time infesting birds of prey in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

We present a new record of the Crested Eagle, Morphnus guianensis (Daudin, 1800), a rare forest eagle of the Neotropics on 22 May 2012 at a Cerrado area in Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. The species has only two historical records in the state, both at areas formerly covered by Atlantic Forest. The finding raises the expectations for the maintenance of the species in the state, stressing the fact that this is the first species record in a Cerrado area in Eastern Brazilian states.

The objectives of this study were to identify anthophilous butterflies on psychophilous flowers of four Asteraceae species in an Atlantic Forest fragment in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Southeastern Brazil, and to determine whether there are species in common with other lepidopteran inventories of the Southeastern and Midwestern regions of Brazil. It is the first inventory of anthophilous butterflies of a semideciduous forest fragment in Zona da Mata, State of Minas Gerais. A total of 108 species were recorded, representing the fourth largest lepidopteran survey in this State. The results demonstrated that Asteraceae species may be important tools for monitoring anthophilous butterflies. The similarity with other inventories ranged from 1 to 92.55%. Fifteen species were reported for the first time in the State of Minas Gerais, and among them, Melanis alena and Thisbe irenea were observed in this study only.

Abstract The echimyid rodents of the genus Phyllomys are medium-sized arboreal spiny rats endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. The genus is currently composed of 13 species, although there are at least four other undescribed species. The ecology, zoogeography and diversity of the genus are still poorly understood. Here, we provide the first record of Phyllomys sulinus from the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, based on a specimen collected in the Serra da Bocaina National Park, which extends the known geographic range of the species approximately 130 km to the northeast. At this site, P. sulinus occurred in syntopy with the cryptic Phyllomys nigrispinus. We describe the karyotype of P. nigrispinus for the first time and identify two different diploid numbers (2n=84 and 85). We also conducted a molecular analysis of the cytochrome b gene of five specimens, which we identified by phylogenetic reconstruction. Our findings reinforce the importance of molecular data, such as DNA sequences, and karyotypes for the differentiation of cryptic, syntopic species.

We report for the first time the occurrence of the venomous snake species Micrurus ibiboboca in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, based on a specimen collected in an Atlantic Forest area. This is the sixth record of a venomous coral snake in Minas Gerais and increases to 160 the number of known snake species in the state.

We present the first record of Ecpleopus gaudichaudi and Psychosaura agmosticha for the state of Bahia, in the Atlantic Forest, Brazil. Ecpleopus gaudichaudi was found in the southernmost portion of the state, in the Restinga de Nova Viçosa, municipality of Nova Viçosa, whereas Psychosaura agmosticha was found in the northernmost portion of the state in the Restinga de Costa Azul, municipality of Jandaíra. This is the first time these lizard species were recorded in restinga habitats, and the first record of P. agmosticha in the Atlantic Forest domains.

ABSTRACT The objective was to present the floristic survey of the bryophytes of the Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro. It included an evaluation of the species richness, as well as information about the substrate preference of each species and its geographic distributions in Brazil. We found 208 taxa of bryophytes: one hornwort, 88 liverworts and 119 mosses. This richness represents ca. 26% of the bryoflora of Minas Gerais State and ca. 13% of that known for Brazil. Eighteen of the bryophytes species are endemic to Brazil, whereas 19 species are recorded for the first time in Minas Gerais. The bryoflora showed preference for tree bark (30%) and rock (23%) as substrates. Our data show that the Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro is an important area for the diversity conservation of Brazilian bryophytes and maintenance of endemic species of the country.

Novos Registros de Vespas Sociais (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) em Floresta Estacional Semidecidual Montana e Mata Seca em Minas Gerais e na Mata Atlântica no Estado do Rio de Janeiro Resumo. Neste trabalho é registrado pela primeira vez a ocorrência de Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán, Mischocyttarus ignotus Zikán, Mischocyttarus nomurae Richards e Mischocyttarus paraguayensis Zikán para o estado de Minas Gerais e Mischocyttarus garbei Zikán para o estado do Rio de Janeiro coletadas por meio de busca ativa e armadilhas atrativas.

Pogoniopsis is an endemic and myco-heterotrophic orchid genus with only two species in Brazil that can be found growing under dense canopy. Pogoniopsis schenckii is more widely distributed, with records in the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. Here we record P. schenckii for the first time in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, in a subtropical broadleaved forest, as well the genus Pogoniopsis itself, expanding its southern distribution limit. In addition, a description and a distribution map of the collected specimens are presented.

We present the first record of Pseudalopex vetulus for Pouso Alegre, southern state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This location is outside the known distribution of the species and also outside the domain of the Cerrado biome, which is usually associated with the geographic distribution of P. vetulus.

Itapotihyla langsdorffii is widely distributed along the Brazlian Atlantic Forest, however, it presence in Minas Gerais state was restricted to five localities, all of them located within the Atlantic Forest domain. Herein, we present the first record of this species from a Cerrado region in Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil.
