The resistance to potato late blight (as AUDPC – the area under the disease progress curve) and yield were evaluated in precise field experiments with 13 colour-fleshed potato cultivars. Red Emmalie and Blaue Anneliese were the most profitable cultivars of potatoes with coloured flesh, the overall yield did not differ statistically from the control cv. Agria. Cv. Blaue Anneliese resistance to potato late blight was considerably better than both control cultivars, other 2 cultivars HB Red and Red Emmalie were similar to cv. Agria. Surprisingly, cv. Russet Burbank was found to be more resistant than most cultivars tested. A statistically significant weak dependence (r = 0.36) between the percentage of infestation of plants in the T6 evaluation date (6–8 August in individual years) and the yield was detected, the slightly stronger (r = 0.40) was the correlation between AUDPC values and total yields.

In this study, the adequacy of the late blight simulation model LATEBLIGHT (version LB2004) was evaluated under Nicaraguan conditions. During 2007 to 2008, five field experiments were conducted in three potato-production regions in northern Nicaragua. Two susceptible (‘Cal White’ and ‘Granola’) and one resistant (‘Jacqueline Lee’) potato cultivars were evaluated without use of fungicides and with three application intervals (4, 7, and 14 days) of the fungicide chlorothalonil. The simulation model was considered adequate because it accurately predicted high disease severity in susceptible cultivars without fungicide protection, and demonstrated a decrease in the disease progress curves with additional fungicide applications, similar to that observed in the plots. The model also generally predicted inadequate fungicide control, even with a 4-day spray interval, which also occurred in the field. Lack of adequate fungicide protection would indicate the need for cultivars with higher levels of durable resistance, and that farmers should consider more effective fungicides applications (higher dosages or different chemistries) if susceptible cultivars are used.

Plant disease epidemiology can make a significant contribution for cultivar selection by elucidating the principles of an epidemic under different levels of resistance. For emerging diseases as wheat blast (WB), epidemiological parameters can provide support for better selection of genetic resources. Field experiments were conducted at two locations in Bolivia in 2018–2019 to characterize the temporal dynamics of the disease on 10 cultivars with different levels of reaction to WB. Logistic models best (R2 = 0.70–0.96) fit the disease progress curve in all cultivars followed by Gompertz (R2 = 0.64–0.94), providing additional evidence of a polycyclic disease. Total area under disease progress curve (tAUDPC), final disease severity (Ymax), and logistic apparent infection rates (rL*) were shown to be appropriate epidemiological parameters for describing resistance and cultivar selection. Cultivars that showed a high spike AUDPC (sAUDPC) showed a high leaf AUDPC (lAUDPC). tAUPDC, Ymax, and rL* were positively correlated among them (P < 0.01) and all were negatively correlated with grain weight (P < 0.01). Based on the epidemiological parameters used, cultivars that showed resistance to WB were Urubó, San Pablo, and AN-120, which were previously reported to have effective resistance against the disease under field conditions. The information generated could help breeding programs to make technical decisions about relevant epidemiological parameters to consider prior to cultivar release.

A bulk of potato varieties were screened against historical Phytophthora infestans causing the late blight of potato. Almost the potato germplasm showed a varying response against the devastating pathogen at Okara and Sahiwal. Field trails were consisted of screening of germplasm, area under disease progress curve and chemical management of the disease by using the various fungicides. Randomized complete block design was used for the research at both locations. Out of 68 genotypes/ varieties 16 were susceptible, 20 moderately resistant, five highly susceptible and 27 as moderately susceptible. Maximum disease incidence was recorded on Desiree and Cardinal (90%) followed by Santee (83.33%). The maximum mean disease severity 9.48 was noted on Cardinal, followed by Desiree 9.11 and Karoda 9.0 with the area under disease progress curve 28.55, 27.33 and 26.00 respectively. The results showed that 5gm/ L was the best dose against the suppression and control of the potato late blight under the field conditions. Azoxystrobin which is a new chemistry fungicide found to be the best chemical treatment against the late blight of potato followed by the copper oxychloride-based fungicides Cobox which also showed best response. Aliette, Antracol, Tebuconazole and Mancozed were also played a role to minimize the disease yet their higher concentration was even not so effective to combat the disease. Mancozeb was not found to be effective to control the disease as compared to the other three fungicides. The abrupt climate change is also facilitating the occurring of disease in all areas of the world.

Production nurseries and daylily hybridizers in the southeast United States rely on the use of fungicides to manage daylily rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia hemerocallidis. Foliar sprays of pyraclostrobin, flutolanil, tebuconazole, myclobutanil, chlorothalonil, mancozeb, pyraclostrobin + boscalid, flutolanil + tebuconazole, flutolanil + myclobutanil, flutolanil + chlorothalonil, and flutolanil + mancozeb applied on 14-day intervals, and a nontreated control, were evaluated under high disease pressure at three locations in Griffin, GA, in 2015. Tebuconazole or the tebuconazole + flutolanil treatment consistently had the lowest area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) of the treatments. The addition of flutolanil to chlorothalonil or mancozeb did not improve rust control and no difference in disease severity was observed in any treatment containing contact fungicides on all assessment dates. Single application costs ranged from $10.21 to $95.96 with tebuconazole providing excellent disease management at a relatively low cost per application ($13.90).

ABSTRACT: Late blight (Phytophthora infestans ) is among the most important and destructive diseases in potato cultivation. Aiming to evaluate the efficacy of the new fungicide ametoctradin, mixed with dimethomorph and metiram, an experiment was carried out in commercial potato crops (Ágata cultivar) in Pilar do Sul, São Paulo state, Brazil, during the growing season in 2013. A randomized block design was used, with 4 replications, on plots of 15 m2. Applications were carried out using a backpack sprayer with a spray-bar under 3 bar of constant pressure. The application volume varied from 300 L to 600 L.ha-1 based on crop development. The variables evaluated were leaf severity (0 to 100%), area under the disease progress curve, and yield. Ametoctradin + dimethomorph (1.25 L.ha-1) provided significant control of late blight, exceeding benthiavalicarb + fluazinam, dimethomorph + metiram, dimethomorph + pyraclostrobin, cymoxanil + mancozeb, metalaxyl-M + mancozeb, ametoctradin + metiram, and pyraclostrobin + metiram, although similar to ametoctradin + dimethomorph (1.00 L.ha-1), fluopicolide + propamocarb, and fenamidone + propamocarb. Ametoctradin + metiram resulted in moderate control, which was always similar to the standard. Ametoctradin and its associations represent a new alternative for the management of potato late blight.
