In this paper, the structural optimization problem of a deployable cable-frame antenna consisting of a cable network and a supporting frame is discussed in detail. Firstly, the initial equilibrium problem of the cable-frame antenna structure is discussed with emphasis on the realization convenience. An optimization model is proposed to get a set of uniformly distributed cable pretensions whilst satisfying the surface precision requirement. Secondly, the optimization of the member size and cable tensions are integrated in one optimization model in which both folded and deployed status are considered. Finally, a 10-meter antenna is optimized with good results which indicates that the proposed method is feasible and effective.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse the effects of member size and external incentives (food safety certification and target market) on cooperative’s product quality, using data collected from 135 apple producing cooperatives in China. Design/methodology/approach – Given that different indicator variables were used to measure apple quality, the authors employed a principle component analysis method to reduce the measurement dimension. An ordinary least square regression was employed to analyse the effects of member size and selective incentives of agricultural cooperatives on product quality. Findings – The empirical results show that member size and cooperative’s product quality bear an inverse “U-shape” relationship, and food safety certification and target market variables tend to positively and significantly influence cooperative’s product quality. In particular, the cooperatives with more food safety certificates and targeting supermarkets and export enterprises are more likely to supply high-quality products. Originality/value – This study provides the first attempt to measure apple quality and investigate the factors that influence cooperative’s product quality.

Atmospheric turbulence results from the vertical movement of air, together with flow disturbances around surface obstacles which make low- and moderate-level winds extremely irregular. Recent advancements in wind engineering have led to the construction of new facilities for testing residential homes at relatively high Reynolds numbers. However, the generation of a fully developed turbulence in these facilities is challenging. The author proposed techniques for the testing of residential buildings and architectural features in flows that lack fully developed turbulence. While these methods are effective for small structures, the extension of the approach for large and flexible structures is not possible yet. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of turbulence in the response of tall buildings to extreme winds. In addition, the paper presents a detailed analysis to investigate the influence of upstream terrain conditions, wind direction angle (orientation), and the interference effect from the surrounding on the response of high-rise buildings. The methodology presented can be followed to help decision makers to choose among innovative solutions like aerodynamic mitigation, structural member size adjustment, and/or damping enhancement, with an objective to improve the resiliency and the serviceability of buildings.

A methodology and a procedure for topology optimization of wing structure based on manufacturing constraints were proposed. By the methodology and procedure proposed, topology of thin-box wing structure which is easier manufactured than traditional topology result can be obtained. The manufacturing constraints of draw direction, member size control and inexcusable initial design were introduced into the optimal procedure and executed in Optistruct. Effect and efficiency were analyzed and compared with traditional topology optimization.
