Many combinatorial optimization problems are hard to solve within the polynomial computational time or NP-hard problems. Therefore, developing new optimization techniques or improving existing ones still grab attention. This paper presents an improved variant of the Ant Colony Optimization meta-heuristic called Enhanced Hyper Cube Framework ACO (EHCFACO). This variant has an enhanced exploitation feature that works through two added local search movements of insertion and bit flip. In order to examine the performance of the improved meta-heuristic, a well-known structural optimization problem of laminate Stacking Sequence Design (SSD) for maximizing critical buckling load has been used. Furthermore, five different ACO variants were concisely presented and implemented to solve the same optimization problem. The performance assessment results reveal that EHCFACO outperforms the other ACO variants and produces a cost-effective solution with considerable quality.

AbstractThis analytical note shall provide a contribution to the understanding of general principles in the Mechanics of (symmetric circular) masonry arches. Within a mainstream of previous research work by the authors (and competent framing in the dedicated literature), devoted to investigate the classical structural optimization problem leading to the least-thickness condition under self-weight (“Couplet-Heyman problem”), and the relevant characteristics of the purely rotational five-hinge collapse mode, new and complementary information is here analytically derived. Peculiar extremal conditions are explicitly inspected, as those leading to the maximum intrinsic non-dimensional horizontal thrust and to the foremost wide angular inner-hinge position from the crown, both occurring for specific instances of over-complete (horseshoe) arches. The whole is obtained, and confronted, for three typical solution cases, i.e., Heyman, “CCR” and Milankovitch instances, all together, by full closed-form explicit representations, and elucidated by relevant illustrations.

Since a long time, metaheuristic algorithms are benefited to detect the best results for any optimization problem. Furthermore, these methods are used to prevent of time, effort and cost losses, while they are performing the optimization process. Hence, in this study, a cantilever beam model, which is one of the structural optimization problem from civil engineering area, was handled with the aim of minimization of the total weight by find the optimum section values consisting of hollow section depths and widths. For this reason, three different methods including the algorithms that artificial bee colony (ABC), bat (BA), and a modified bat (MBA) combining of BA with Lévy flight, were operated. Additionally, several applications previously carried out for this model, were presented in order to compare of optimization results (minimum objective function with optimum design variable values), and success of proposed algorithm was showed with statistical results and optimization parameter values.

In this paper, the structural optimization problem of a deployable cable-frame antenna consisting of a cable network and a supporting frame is discussed in detail. Firstly, the initial equilibrium problem of the cable-frame antenna structure is discussed with emphasis on the realization convenience. An optimization model is proposed to get a set of uniformly distributed cable pretensions whilst satisfying the surface precision requirement. Secondly, the optimization of the member size and cable tensions are integrated in one optimization model in which both folded and deployed status are considered. Finally, a 10-meter antenna is optimized with good results which indicates that the proposed method is feasible and effective.
