The article presents a problem of car sequencing from the perspective of the paint shop requirements. The issue of determining production orders depending on a color, on which a body is painted, has been considered in the literature several times. However, the assumptions proposed by scientists simplified greatly the analyzed problem in relation to the existing industrial solutions and requirements. The purpose of conducted analysis is to demonstrate a need for a completely new approach to sequencing problem, taking into account an actual structure of a car production line and organization of work in a paint shop.

Presented is the concept of paint shop operation for the automotive industry – Paint Shop 4.0, based on the ideas of Industry 4.0 and Digital Factory. A new approach to the issue of car body sequencing, taking into account the actual structure of the paint shop department with buffers, has been presented. In the created application, proprietary car body sequencing algorithms were implemented.

A car factory contains three main workshops; body shop, paint shop and assembly shop. Each of these three workshops has their set of constraints which have to be met in a production day by arranging the vehicles. The car sequencing problem is used to create a production sequence that meets these constraints. Car sequencing problem first handled in the literature by optimization of assembly constraints including ratio constraints. After that, color constraints are integrated to assembly constraints. At this chapter, the scenario in which high priority ratio constraints are primary, color constraints are secondary is tackled and a heuristic approach is proposed. For optimization of ratio constraints, an initial algorithm based on the greedy algorithm is used. The developed algorithm is coded and used on data set which is proposed by Renault at the ROADEF'2005 challenge. According to results, it is achieved the range of results which is achieved by ROADEF finalists.

A modified method of follow-up production control that can be used in a multi-version car body sequencing process at the paint shop department is presented. The actual structure of the paint shop along with the buffer was subjected to tests (Car Sequencing Problem 4.0). The main goals of the research were to minimize the number of changeovers resulting from color changes and to synchronize these changeovers with forced, periodic cleaning of paint guns.
