Carl Funk (Derm. Ztschr. Bd. 55, H. 2, 1929) performed a complement rejection reaction in 600 gonorroics and in 100 people with various other diseases, and in acute gonorrhea A. received 60% of positive results, in chronic - 80%, with epididymitis 90%, with prostatitis and spermatocystitis 97%, with arthritis, bursitis and tendovaginitis 97%. The brightness of the reaction is observed on the 14th day after the onset of the disease. According to the author's observations, the reaction is characterized by great specificity, only in isolated cases (polyart. Reumatica) there is a nonspecific delay in hemolysis. The reaction is of great service in differentiating doubtful cases of inflammation of the appendages, eyes, joints, heart disease and gonococcal sepsis and a number of other diseases of the genitourinary sphere. Stable positive, the reaction of deviation of complement in cases of establishing the fact that gonorrhea has been cured indicates the presence of a hidden focus with gonococci.

Aim - to evaluate the efficacy of treatment of secondary arthrosis of the coxofemoral joints associated with osteopetrosis using arthroplasty. Materials and methods - clinical observation of two cases of treatment of patients with autosomal dominant form of osteopetrosis who underwent total hip arthroplasty at the Federal State Budgetary Institution Federal Center of Traumatology, Orthopaedics and Endoprosthesis replacement (Cheboksary). Results. We obtained positive results and patient’s satisfaction with the function of prosthetic joints with a follow-up period of 3.5 years. This method of treatment showed its efficacy during the specified follow-up period. Arthroplasty provides relief from pain, improved quality of life and increased mobility of the joint for patients with coxarthrosis associated with osteopetrosis.

The observations presented in this paper may be summarized as follows: A study has been made on an isolated group of children with heart disease. All of these individuals, with one exception, were rheumatic subjects. Many of them carried a strain of hemolytic streptococcus in the throat flora during the winter of 1934. The organism produced no detectible toxin and was not associated with respiratory disease. Four patients contracted chicken pox during the winter months. None developed rheumatic recrudescences. All of the individuals were in good health on March 1. A severe epidemic of influenza began on March 22. All but six children contracted the disease. The filterable virus responsible for this outbreak was recovered. This agent did not activate the rheumatic process. It was followed by an outbreak of streptococcus infection and appeared to facilitate its spread. The source of these infections was not traced. They were due to a single type of hemolytic streptococcus which was a strong toxin producer. Its cultural, biochemical and serological characteristics were different from those of the carrier strain. Of seventeen individuals proven bacteriologically to be infected with the epidemic strain, fourteen rheumatic subjects developed acute rheumatism, two rheumatic subjects and one patient with congenital heart disease escaped. These fourteen rheumatic attacks were accompanied by a rise in antistreptolysin titer coincident with the onset of symptoms. In four of these attacks it was possible to exclude influenza as a causative factor. The clinical observations, the bacteriological findings and the immunological evidence indicate that this severe outbreak of rheumatic fever was caused by Streptococcus hemolyticus, which appeared to be a single strain by type.

The diverse clinical picture and the non-specificity of symptoms in Lyme disease (LD) require the implementation of effective diagnostics, which should take into account the heterogeneity of Borrelia antigens. According to available guidelines, laboratories should use a two-tier serological diagnosis based on the enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) screening test and confirmation of the immunoblot (IB). The aim of the study was to investigate the immunoreactivity of LD patient sera to Borrelia antigens and to attempt to identify the genospecies responsible for LD using an ELISA–IB assay combination. Eighty patients with suspected LD and 22 healthy people participated in the study. All samples were tested with ELISA and IB assays in both IgM and IgG antibodies. In the case of the ELISA assay, more positive results were obtained in the IgM class than in the IgG class. In the case of the IB assay, positive results dominated in the IgG class. Positive results obtained in the IB assay most often showed IgM antibodies against the OspC and flagellin antigens, whereas the IgG antibodies were against VlsE, BmpA, OspC, p41, and p83 antigens. The IB assay is an important part of LD serodiagnosis and should be mandatory in diagnostic laboratories.

This paper presents preliminary results of symptomatic and behavioral changes and psychodynamic observations for 9 young adult bulimic women treated with psychodynamic group psychotherapy. Pre/post group test results showed significant improvement on all measures of eating pathology, on the EDI ineffectiveness item and the Janis-Field feelings of inadequacy scale as well as on the total score of the Hopkins Symptom checklist. These results were consistent with independent clinical conclusions and with verbal reports of improvements in hinging and purging behaviour. Clinical content shed light on the role of the parents, especially the father, in the development of body-image, sense of adequacy and self-esteem, life goals and feminine identification. The authors conclude that clinical observations to date have yielded interesting psychodynamic hypotheses and the initial symptomatic improvements warrant cautious therapeutic optimism.
